Terrible MMORPG experience

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 1 / 3

I canceled my Ultima Online subscription to give this a shot about a year or two ago. I quickly went back to Ultima Online, leaving this one behind. And here's why...

Everquest is a terrible online gaming and MMORPG experience. Level gaining is boring and unrealistic. First off, it's fun, then just a couple days later it's a chore that you have to force yourself to do. Another point off is the currency system. It's too complicated. There are many types of gold, it's very annoying. When trying to buy an item, it'll cost; 7 copper coins, 12 silver coins, 2 semi-copper coins (sarcasm), it's just terrible.

The only good thing about the game at all is the diverse and deep character creation. Many face choices (most are ugly), and there are very good races to choose from. The class choice is a bit stale, but good. However, all of this is simply not enough to give Everquest two stars.

The gameplay is terrible.
I'm going to stick to Ultima Online, and I suggest Ultima Online over this game to anyone interested in an MMORPG.

Hello all. To begin I loved Everquest and have played for years now with so much fun and meeting new people. I was just wondering for other people out there... Are there any games just like EverQuest, that you don't have to pay that monthly charge for? If so respond to this. Thanks again

Real good expansion..

The main problem i noticed was how this expansion seperates the Casual Gamer from the Hardcore Gamer, ie player who plays 2hrs or less daily vs the player who plays 2+hrs (and ive met an alarming amount of people who play 20+ hours on weekends). 3 zones are accessible, plane of disease, innovation, and nightmare (tier 1 zones). Getting access to the tier 2 zones is a tough thing to do for casual gamers as it requires a LOT of time (ive met people whove spent over 1 month just doing trials there daily). After getting access to Tier 2 zones (plane of valor and storms), thats pretty much the end of the casual gamer. This expansion gives the casual gamer 5 zones to hunt in, when there are over 20 PoP zones in total. I dont mind it at all, but im sure some will.

However, i like the fact that i dont have to pay for ports anymomre (other than Cobalt Scar and Emerald Jungle), i belive PoPs main reason for people buying it is its ease of traveling abilities. Also, the animation, and overal look of NPC's in PoP zones look a lot better.

Good lord Kevin is bitter.

Don't listen to him, he's probably one of the types that think that customer service = getting what you want, when you want. And monks aren't broken. People need to learn when it's appropriate to use the term "nerf". :P

Honestly, Everquest is a nitch game. You either really like it or you don't. Sony/Verant actually does a good job in adding content, but one thing that Kevin doesn't realize is that when you add new content, you can't test it to be compatible with EVERY single system out there (I can speak from experience, I used to be a game tester).

Now for the Planes of Power review. Planes of Power is GREAT, even if you aren't of the 55th+ level, the ability to port yourself from the Plane of Knowledge to basically anywhere in the game world is invaluable. The experience gain in PoP is phenominal, especially if you are able to find a group in the mid-50s. They did add some no-drop vendor purchasable spells pre-61st level for some classes, but they aren't anything to write home about. The whole parchment system needs work though, but they did increase the drop rate in some planes.

The one thing that I don't like about Planes of Power is that the /raid system is a PoP-enabled feature only. Which basically means that those who can't/won't buy PoP, you cannot use the /raid system (which is beautiful, it's about time) unless you group those without PoP together and the rest go on /raid.

All in all, even though I'm not 61+ plus yet and have only seen the tier 1 planes, it's a great expansion. Much better then Kunark. :D

Personally for all you who are thinking about buying Everquest, I recommend that you dont. Why pay money for something that has no customer service? Their customer service is terrible, the worst I:ve seen so far. Also, they dont plan very well with updates to the game. They don:t test new things being implemented. They make rash decisions and NERF classes for solutions to the game. Such as Monks who now have no role in the game. How is this bad? well if you put a lot of time into your character for 6 months to a year and he has a defined role, and SONY turns around and nerfs them so they don:t have a role, how do you feel then? Sony looks for the easy way out on all problems. For example, with the Luclin expansion they put out to many items that are usuable by all/all. Well a Monk should only be wearing Leather and cloth items, hehe they are monks. But now they are wearing items that should be worn only by the other classes, thus making them more powerful. Instead of doing the hard work and changing the items in game to be class specific, they (Sony) goes out and nerfs the monk class making them worthless now in groups. Don:t buy this game until Sony improves their Development team and customer service. thanks

Awesome

The new Planes of Power expansion is the best expansion to date. There are countless amounts of new quests and items and many new experiences to be had for the higher level player that's bored of Kunark and Velious. Yes, as someone else posted, you do have to be 46+ to enjoy the Planes of Power expansion, but even if you aren't the portals in Planes of Knowledge and the quests you can do are still worth while. As for needing multiple 61+ groups like a previous poster said, this is untrue. Yes, you are limited to only 6 planes if you aren't of a good level and in a decent guild, but those 6 zones are amazing. The experience you get in any of the planes is alot better than anywhere else. Even the favorite experience zones like the revamped Cazic-Thule, Dragon Necropolis, and Chardok can't touch it.

Anyway, no matter what level you are, I feel that the first plane, the Plane of Knowledge, is worth the [money] alone. With this plane you are never more than 5 zones away from anything and you no longer have to search for a wizard/druid and beg/pay them to port you there. Also, anyone can enter the Plane of Knowledge, not just 46+. PoK has much more than just portals, most tradeksill items are sold there, and many new ones wait to be found. There's numerous quests you can do in the Planes of Knowledge that can be done by players of various levels. Plus, for once the soundtrack is great. Not many people played the current EQ with the music on, in most zones there wasn't even anything to listen to, but that's changed with Planes of Power. Each plane has it's own rich, vibrant music that alot of are people enjoying.

the guy who called it worthless probably makes his money shouting "porting for donations" even at lower levels, PoP is useful in the travel aspect: you can get to any major city now without having to donate for a port, or wait for the luclin spires. just click the book, you're in plane of knowledge, and find the stone of the city you want to go to, click, and you are there. plus, PoK has some quests that involve the old world and not just the other planes, so you don't have to be above the 46 minimum to utilize them.

just my 2 cp.

Far from worthless

PoP is a worthwhile expansion for players of all levels. The planes are restricted to higher level players, but there is enough value here to warrant a purchase by a lower level character.

Quite simply, travel is easier than ever before thanks to the Plane of Knowledge. You can port from the plane of knowledge to almost any city in the game. The hour long run from Freeport to Qeynos? No more. Go from Freeport to PoK, then port back down to Qeynos. It's that simple.

Additionally, PoP offers some badly needed improvements for previously marginalized classes (shadow knights). Furthermore, there are trainers and spell vendors for every class in the game, all in one handy spot. You don't even have to worry about faction, everyone in PoK is indifferent to all.

Also, this is hardly the worst expansion available for EQ. At least PoP was ready to go when it was released. Can you say Luclin?

To the planes Alice!

Well here we find ourselves looking at the pretty red box and going [hmmm]

Why you ask.. simple.. we rushed to get this new expansion so that we would be able to take advantage of the new portals.. (I play characters that are 20 and below).. And let me tell you that I got more then I expected from the plane of knowledge.. This new area is just expansive!!! The library soars into the skies and is chock full of books and learning.. I spent over an hour just browsing the merchants, seekers, etc.. in the library alone.. and that does not even include the new merchants around the library..

While this is excellent addition I only gave PoP a three due to it's restrictive lock on characters below 60th.. Yes this was designed for higher level character but, they should have opened up more then one plane for us lower lvls to play on..

My other complaint is that they should have taken the time to tweek some of the older areas with this new disk.. I mean they had loads of room on that almost wastefull second CD we all had to install..
