Ok i have noticed most people arent liking my reviews of things so hopefully i can better myself with this one. Alright for starters the main characters name is torque and he has been accused of murdering his family and is in the Abbot state penitentary on Carnate island. Ok so thats out of the way. Now the gameplay. It is incredible this is the greatest thing ever controlling torque is easy and fun the story is pretty good and the characters are great. also check out resident evil, silent hill, and the odd one of the bunch metal gear solid

I've never played a game that actually scared me before. I mean: really scared. I actually dropped the controller at one point. My pulse was pounding hard!!! I don't want to say anything that would ruin the surprises, but you're going to wonder how they did a lot of the things they did in this game. Do yourself a favor though, and skip the movie intro. The voice actors are terrible. Don't let it taint the way you see the rest of the game, which is blissy.

I must say, I wasn't expecting very much from this game. Haven't seen much advertisement on it, and the cost to buy it was a mere (...). I traded in some old video games to purchase it, so I figured I wasn't losing much if I didn't like. Well, I was pleasantly surprised.

You get to kill all sorts of creatures and they react, or sometimes, not react differently to the weapon you're using. There's lots of blood and then there's my personal favorite...save anywhere feature.

I personally didn't care to transform into the beast unless I was low on ammo or being ambushed. Also, I will never get the good ending. Forget trying to save some sorry inmate or guard's life when I've got my own butt to worry about. It's all about me!!! And don't let them get in my way. I have no problem shooting an innocent victim to finish the game.

It was a lot fun, and the replay value is high since you can play on a harder level and complete missions differently. If there's one thing I wish I could do differently, it would be not purchasing No One Lives Forever years ago. I will give it bad reviews as long as I live. What a piece of crap!!!

Who's Suffering? I was when i tried the game.

good thing i rented it. i'm not saying it is a totally bad horrible game but the game is pretty much mediocre. it controls like nearly identical to max payne but more sloppy. you can compare the violence to manhunt yet manhunt does it in good taste. you can compare the controls to max payne or hitman 1 and 2 but the controls can sometimes be dull and sluggish. sometimes it' not fast enough when you want to turn left or right.

the monster model is created by stan winston which i don't consider that scary. the sounds are ok but the scare factor or the nervousness that came along with silent hill, residne evil, and fatal frame games lack in here.

if you played nightmare creatures before in playstation then the game is pretty much like that as well. the graphics or average too and the environement is pretty flat and look the same. same layout as nightmare creatures as well.

losts of swearing doesn't make the game appealing. you pretty much spend all the time trying to find the door that opens aside from the doors that are lock. what you can do is collect some weaopns like tommy guns and revolvers and shoot alot.

some of the character models look goofy and retarded. but in conclusion, this game is maybe a renter but for 50 bucks US it ain't worth it buying this game.

sadly the only thing entertaining about the game is the documentary of the haunted prison on the dvd extras. other than that, the game will get dull and boring after 20 minutes.

i can honestly say that i wouldn't even buy this game in greates hits. the game lacks substance. flat and sluggish controls and mediocre graphics equals the score i give it.

one more thing. the xbox version of the game has slightly better control and graphics. but still it's pretty much the same game.

Wait 'til the game comes out to review

You people are unbelievable! How can you review a game that doesn't even come out until tomorrow? You're either the developer trying to generate hype or you're just a fanboy who has nothing else to do but try to get attention.

I have not rated the game because I have not played the full version. For those rating the demo, please say so in your subject heading. Otherwise, wait until the full version is released. Thanks

Great action horror. Surprise game of the year so far.

In an earlier review, I bashed this game saying it was just another survival horror wannabe like Fatal Frame and Clock Tower 3. Yeah I'm the guy who said stick with Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Well I take it all back, now I feel like a moron. I guess that's what happends when you judge a game before playing it.

The Suffering actually does evolve survival horror into a more action shooter based horror. The horror concept is also pretty original with a combinatin of gore, ghosts, and deformed creatures. Typical scary stuff, but the game is also disturbing in a rude and more thuggish manner with even some humor thrown in. Earlier Rockstar Games released Manhunt a game that was labeled as Resident Evil or survival horror for Grand Theft Auto fans and I think this game to can go under that catergory. It's better than RE: Outbreak, Fatal Frame 2, probably even Silent Hill 3, but Silent Hill is my cult favorite.

As far as the graphics and gameplay, it's very solid with a surprisly smooth control and feel to it. It's like Max Payne but 100 times smoother. Graphics are also impressive with awesome lighting effects. Sound is impressive, and despite what you'll hear from reviews the voice acting is very good and very funny, falls in right with the tone of the game.

How does the game compare to other horror games as far as scare factor? Well this is more of an action horror,so you should think more along the lines of Doom or something. It's not quite in the level of Silent Hill or Fatal Frame but it's got a very disturbing yet a bit humorous thuggish feel to it. The game also has some good extras like a behind the scenes look at the making of the game, along with a very good movie on the history of some of the worst and most barbaric prisons and methods of torture ever. This game really brings prison hell to life, it's the surprise of the year for me s far.

its here and its great!

the suffering is the scariest game ive ever played.its even scarier than sillent hill 3 and the resident evil games.theres alot of blood and cursing so i dont recomend it for anyone under the age.the creatures in the game are scary,in one part a creature ran out of the room and when i peeked through the glass mirror it saw me and ran back in.and in another part i tryed to open adoor and i turned sideways and a slayer(a spider like creature that stands on four legs or 2)was standing right there staring at me.anyway midway acomplished a very good game.

HORROR AT ITS FINEST

Finally a good survival horror title has arrived for the PS2. The Suffering is truly survival horror at it's finest. In it you play as Torque; a convict on death row for killing his family or so it seems. As he is being moved to the death chamber of the prison all Hell brakes loose and the prison is under siege by supernatural forces.
Although this was first desighned as 1st person shooter the developers had a change of heart and turned it into a 3rd person survival horror genre. With that you might think it's one of those puzzle solving with hours of cut scenes kind of games with little action; but not in The Sufferings case' theres plenty of action here. You will face hordes of monsters as the action revolves around constantly strafing and shooting{ this was at first supposed to be a 1st person shooter} as you switch through weapons to adjust to the changing enemy conditions. Don't get me wrong here this game does take a lot of brains from time to time with constant but easy puzzles.
Besides the great action this game has a chuck full of violence packed in it. In Resident Evil the gore came only from time to time. Not in this game the profanity just does not stop in this game. Theres constant cursing everywhere as well as beef everywhere. As you run around the prison island the whole area is decimated with cracks, garbage, blood, dead bodies, etc. There was one seen that really got me which was in the prisons mental asylum were a dead guy with all 4 limbs cut off was flopping around like a dying fish so I had to kill him to put him out of his misery. The most amazing thing about the violence in this game is the flashbacks. As Torque progresses through the island there are flash backs of morbid images that relate to the story. As well for the story it in it's self is extremly graphic and well deserves a movie script.
As not for other survival horror games a new spin is put in The Suffering youre actions will affect the end of the game. As you progress through the game you will be met with certain desciscions such as should I kill this guy or help him its up to you and it will affect the outcome of the ending.

Great Action Horrow Game

The Suffering is one of the biggest surprises of the year for me. The Sound effects and audio in the game are second to none, the action is pretty fast-paced and as a result - very fun, the graphics are good (although textures could have used a bit more polish but this is a minor gripe) and the voice acting is incredible.

If you're looking for a solid, fun action/horror game (no "survival" elements such as lack of ammo) than this game will definitely wow you. Kudos to Surreal Software and Midway.

I liked this one..

The Suffering. All together I thought this was a great game. It wasn't as hard as I thought it might be. But I really liked the whole "good guy" "bad guy" thing it has going on. I would say atleast rent it and see if you like it.
