Great game, runs crappy on anything but the newest machines

This is probably the best shooter of all time. If you are looking for a great game and have the latest, greatest system, go for it. If you don't have a G5, however, I'd recommend getting an Xbox and playing it on there. You can also get Halo 2 when it comes out on Nov. 9 (which will be even better than Halo!). The only thing the Mac version has going for it are the new weapons and vehicles, and online play. Otherwise, the game is great, but it runs badly without a graphics card with over 64mb memory.

With all the praise that preceded the Mac release of Halo, and having only very briefly played with the Xbox version, I eagerly awaited my chance to see what all the fuss was about. Sadly, my only reaction has been one of disappointment.

Once the technical novelty wore off, the single player missions quickly became tedious and repetitive, the plot - supposedly a highlight - unengaging and banal (even by game standards). I could barely bring myself to finish the game once, let alone consider playing it over again.

Multiplayer fares slightly better - vehicles in particular are a novel and welcome addition, creating an interesting multiplayer dynamic. However, at the time of writing I've stuggled to find a decent server playing something other than boring 'Slayer' deathmatches.

Performance wise, Halo is reasonably playable at 896x600 with medium detail on my 1.25GHz PowerBook G4 (1GB RAM, Radeon 9600), but is nevertheless somewhat sluggish compared to other similar Mac games such as UT2K3 and America's Army.

Great Game If...

For those of you who don't know, Microsoft bought Bungie, Halo's manufacturer, because they liked Halo. Halo was going to be released first on Mac, then PC, but Microsoft decided they wanted Halo as their flagship X-Box game. But 2 years after Halo's X-Box debut, Microsoft came through with Halo for Mac. Better late than never, though. Unless you have a G5 or Panther, you cann forget about Halo. The system requirements say 800 MhZ, but I have a 12" 867 Powerbook with Jaguar, and I had a lot of trouble. With lots of people around, the game freezes up a lot. Multiplayer is good usually though. I reccommend setting the Halo resolution low, like 800x600. Also, change the graphics quality to low and all that stuff. I am kind of tired of Halo now, but that's just because I'm, stuck in the single player campaign. So unless you have a G5, DON'T BUY THIS GAME!

Good and Bad

Well, I was quite honestly expecting more. But then again, it is Microsoft... The story mode is fun for awhile, but the multiplayer never gets old, that is if you actually find a good server that does lag too much and doesn't have too many 13-year-old kids shooting teammates. On my dual 1.42GHz MDD G4 with 512 and an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro card, the framerate still dips down to unplayable levels. Unreal 2003 looks much more detailed and I have never had the framerate slow down, even online. It's still fun to play though. If you're a Halo fan and don't have an XBOX, think about the purchase, but only if you have a FAST Mac.

Could this change FPS for macs?

Hello, welcome to my review. I play a lot of Halo on my mac and this is what i can say:
1) Sound-5/5: This game has great sound. You can hear all the gun fire and voices from the computer players on campaign mode. On Multiplayer, it's so life like so it feel like you are actually in the game.

2)Graphics-4.5/5: This game sets the bar for Mac games. Yes the people don't look to realistic, but once you play with other people in their SPARTAN suits this games graphics just blew the roof. All the guns look like there supposed to be so you don't have to waste your time picking it up to find out what it actually is.

3)Controls-3.5/10: The controls are really confusing at first but once you get them down they're a piece of cake. I wouldn't recommend changing them when you get the game, because it'll just make it more difficult to play. The best kind of mouse to use for this game is a Microsoft mice, since it has the two click so you can shoot and throw grenades. The one click Apple mice are harder to use, because you have to press control then click for the grenades. **You can even buy a gamepad for it. I would highly recommend it.**

4)Multiplayer-5/5: In my opinion this is the best multiplayer game for the Mac. They have all the original game modes in Halo and Halo 2 for the Xbox such as: Capture the Flag, Slayer, and King of The Hill just to list a few. They also have your favorite multiplayer stages: Blood Gulch, Side Winder, ect.

5)Gameplay-4.5/5: This has great gameplay. You are a SPARTAN an undefeatable warrior. Like all futuristic games, you must save your planet from Covenant (aliens) invasion. You get powerful guns used by the humans and you are also able to pick up the Covenant's weapons. This is also based on objectives or missions, some include: protect the area from the Covenants, infiltrate the base protect fellow teammates. This also has a great tutorial level just to get you ready for the real stuff. A very well laid out game.

6)Overall-5/5: This is a must buy if you enjoy computer gaming on Macs, especially if your into First Person Shooter games.

Thank you for taking the time to read my review on Halo: Combat Evolved on the Mac.

I have played many video games and found halo to be one of the best. It is pretty much a duplicate of the xBox version. The story line is great for campaign, and hosting and joining multiplayer games is really easy. There is very little lag when I play on a 800 mhz g4 and DSL. I highly reccomend this game.

Bungie's Greatest

Wow Halo, I have had it for the Xbox for years, and fun's come with it ever since. Then I heard that they had made it for the computer. I had an old windows 98 that froze all the time so I wasn't very interested, I just heard that there was the new flamethrower as a weapon, and with my computer there was no chance I would get Halo or ever run it. Then one day I got a Mac Mini(thats quite a leap)! And then I remembered about that old classic, Halo! I quickly installed the game and started playing the campaign right away. The graphics were great and all the intense game play really blew the game away. Then I decided to play some multiplayer, and get the new flamethrower. I was impressed beyond my expectations because not only was there the flamethrower but the fuelrodcannon, six new maps, banshees, rocket launcher warthogs(like in Halo2), and the shade. All these were amazing to me because the xbox version didn't have any of these aspects in there multiplayer. The only bug that I found in the game is that when I save a multiplayer game it freezes up so even though it saves it I get confused on how to exit the game since everything freezes but one you exit it it comes back to normal. And if you have an apple mouse then it will be very tedious to throw the grenades because it requires the right clicker, so once you get Halo go out and buy yourself a Microsoft mouse. Even though this game has a few minor flaws it's still a beautifully made game. This one is truly one of Bungie's greatest works yet.

If You Love Mediocrity, This Game Is For You!!!

Halo for the Mac is an okay game if you like repititious single-player games reminiscent of the very first Doom. The multiplayer is very buggy despite the 1.0.4.1 patch which should have allowed me to play with PC-users...NOT!!! But not all is bad, Halo is a beautiful game, especially if you have a 64Mb or higher graphics card, and the story is decent being flavored by hard science-fiction elements like the halo itself (aka Larry Niven's RINGWORLD) and the in-game physics of running and operating are very realistic!

However, if you're looking for heart-pounding, adrenaline-inducing, edge-of-your-seat fragfest multiplayer action, I highly recommend Unreal 2k3 and 2k4, or wait for Doom 3 if you're a purist for single-player shooter games.
