Have you ever wanted to be in an action movie? Well, unless you look like Brad Pitt and you have some good Hollywood connections, you'd better not quit your day job.

On the other hand, there's Metal Gear Solid 4. It's like an Anime action film where you have control over the lead character. While a little melodramatic at times, the story is a lot of fun. Importantly, there's no need to have played the previous Metal Gear games to be able to jump right into this continuing saga (I can say this first-hand as I only started gaming last year).

The difference between MGS4 and other action games that I've played is that you are rewarded for being stealthy and covert. You will go a lot further a lot faster in MGS4 by sneaking past some of your enemies versus blasting your way past. In fact, alerting the enemy to your presence in some areas will lead to certain death.

There are many Weapons to choose from to put down the enemies that you can't just sneak by, in addition to all different kinds of Items that will help you heal, hide or just take some of the stress of play away (like an adult magazine or an iPod!).

With all of the different weapons and "stuff" that can be used, and the stealth action style required throughout the game, I was little nervous before starting play that the controller schematics would be a pain to learn for all the different elements of the game...especially Close Quarters Combat...I'm terrible at hand to hand fighting games. But after the first minutes of the game, I quickly realized that the controls were as user friendly as the easiest game that I've ever played.

There are 4 levels of difficulty to choose from (and I think perhaps a 5th to unlock if you complete the game on the hardest difficulty???), and I can say again first-hand that the easiest difficulty is way too easy. Unless you want almost no challenge whatsoever, I'd recommend starting the game on the second-easiest setting or normal setting if you've got good gaming experience.

You've probably heard it everywhere already...there are some very long cutscenes in this game, but it really adds to the fun; and it's essential if you care about understanding the history of the story going back to MGS1. On the easiest setting I was given the option during every cutscene to skip if I wanted to (which I never did), but I've heard that on some of the other difficulties the option to skip the cutscenes isn't available in your first play-through (I'm not 100% sure about that though).

The graphics are great. The Dolby Digital Surround plays beautifully through a 5.1 or better system.

There's plenty here for gunners, hand to hand fighters, puzzle solvers and people who just love that challenge of finding the right road to the next level. But most of all, there's apx 18 hours of playtime that will have you sneaking around in some of the coolest environments that you've ever seen in a video game.

MGS4 is a must for any PS3 owner.

Every other game has been bumped down a notch...

I've been an avid fan of video games since I was six. That was well over 20 years ago. I first caught wind of the Metal Gear Series back in 1988 on the Nintendo Entertainment System. While all other games established a run-and-gun play style, this series was bent on rewarding gamers for doing the exact opposite (playing in a sneak fashion). The story of Snake being a clone of the legendary Big Boss was a little far-fetched for its time, but with the technology of today, seems a little more believable.

As time went on, I've seen over 4 sequels in this storyline. Each addition to the story added more plotlines and far more questions to the forefront. With the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, all loose ends have been tied off, and every question that has boggled Metal Gear fans for decades are now answered. The lengthy cutscenes provide enough backstory to satisfy the gamers that have followed this story from the beginning.

Hideo Kojima has, once again, pulled out the stops on Stealth Action gameplay, creating an experience that is definitely unforgettable. This game is cinematically breathtaking, surpassing every game that is currently on the market. The storyline quality rivals Hollywood movies.

I've played through the single-player mode a total of 9 times so far, and I'm currently going through my tenth playthrough on "Big Boss Extreme," which is the hardest difficulty.

Multiplayer mode has typical gametypes that you'd find in games that rely on team-based strategy (Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the "Flag"). One game variant that stands out from the rest is "Team Sneaking," which is a game variant similar to the action you'd see in-game: two warring factions (PMCs and Militiamen) are constantly at war with each other, while one player takes control of Snake and has an objective of his own. Games in this variant are usually lengthy, and hours can pass by before you realize that you should step away from the PS3.

I highly suggest playing all of the previous titles in the Metal Gear Saga before touching this one. After all, you wouldn't watch the last movie in a trilogy without watching the first and second films, right? If you did, you can't blame the movie for not making sense. This game is exactly the same way. For the followers of the game's 20 year plot, this game was the answer that all Metal Gear fans were looking for. For the newcomers, this game will provide a great play experience, but the story might be a little too farfetched. Old and new fans alike, this game will definitely raise the bar on gaming standards for years to come.

Im a HARSH critic to the EXTREME aaaaaaaaaaaand....

I must say that this is by far the BEST game ive ever played. This is the first time that a game has delivered EVERYTHING i wanted, and i do mean EVERYTHING. There isnt a ridiculous amount of profanity like in GTA4, and there is no nudity (if you want to count old Snakes' bare naked chest as offensive nudity then be my guest). I have never in my life been so stuck on a game to the point where i have to seriously choose between putting the game on pause to pee, or continue playing a MASTERPIECE.

Im not done with the game. And im soooooo happy about that. I've read the other reviews and i REFUSE to spoil any gameplay for you readers. Lets just say this. If you had ANY questions in previous installments, then dont miss ANY cut scenes because they all get answered. If you want to know why vamp refuses to die, then DONT SKIP CUT SCENES. Im not going to tell you where this is will be said, so DONT SKIP THROUGH THEM.

I will say this, and hopefully it wont spoil anything but it WILL make you want the game. If you are like me and you found the online clip that had the two metal gears faced to face making you wish you could play as Rex to fight Liquid, then i HIGHLY suggest getting this game ;-).

All exaggerations aside, the game is sick. Pure sickness. I was tripping while talking to my wife about them game. I was stunned and im STILL not finished and im soooooo excited. The bosses require you to think, well 2/4 do. Two of them are much less difficult to beat, but two of them do challenge your brains especially the last one (thats why im still not finished, and im quite a gamer).

Weapons-10/10
Graphics- 10's an understatement
Cutscenes- besides length (which actually if you wish to understand the why's and the who's) is a 10

Overall-10/10

The ONLY downside to this game is that it makes ALL other games seem incomplete. It raises the standard completely. I have no clue how GTA4 could come even close to being game of the year. After playing this i have no desire to play any other game for awhile. Reason being, its a new experience each time you play. literally. Characters never spawn in the same place twice in this game. So if you are looking to wait for a soldier walking to shoot him in the spot you saw him before you die, WOOPS try again because he'll probably pop up behind you and kill you again lol.

Hope this review helped. God Bless and GAME ON!!!!!!!

The game was amazing! Incredible graphics and detail to every little thing. Wraps up the story in every sense possible. Straightens out all the twists and turns of the series. If you've ever played MGS before you need this one! I've been a huge fan, played them all. And this is not one to be left out of the collection. Typical MGS style with cutscenes, but if you're a true fan you will appreciate them. Especially with the flashback scenes to previous games. Even if youre not a huge fan, the long cutscenes will give you the entire story line. Sad to see the story end, but this is one incredible way to do it! Top 3 best games of all time!

Metal Gear Solid 4,

i have never played any of the first ones, so this comes directly from the new one, I had no good games for my ps3 and when i heard about this i had to get it, i got the limited edition wich came with a blu ray disc film , and also a audio cd, and a awesome box, i got it at midnight and also got the limited edition guide, that was over a 100 bucks so i didnt want to be disapointed, Once the game got installed on my ps3 i nearly fainted, the graphics almost brought a tear to my eye, the attention to detail was spectacular, also the voice overs were soo real to me,

Gameplay-
its a third person, however when you go to aim your gun it goes into the resident evil 4 aiming, which i was praying for, its amazing how well this fits this game of the year, you have tons of weapons that you can all customize,

Custom-
early in the game about a hour in, you come acroos this neat Weapon dealer, you cant help but love LITTLE GREY the adorable monkey, the monkey always makes me crack up during the cut scenes, The monkey was a great touch, I have never had so much fun customizing guns ever, you can put red dot, scope, ect, its awesome and i love it cause i make the guns the way i would want to see it in a movie, when you have them in gameplay you can seee every little detail, (In 1080p) however i bet even with out high def you can see the detail,

This game is amazing the graphics, story, gameplay its all put together to make game of the year,

After Two years of struggling to get Triple A titles, the PS3 finally gets its flagship game. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. But its not Triple A at all, in fact its Quadruple A. it is one of the greatest games ever made. Hideo Kojima has reset new standards on the action/adventure/stealth genre. The last time he did this was Metal Gear Solid 1. For any Metal Gear Fan this is a dream come true.

for anyone that is new to MGS4, it is recommended to play the prior titles in the MGS universe in a time line(MGS3--->MGPO---->(MG1[not required]--->MG2[not required]--->MGS1---->MGS2) it would help you understand the storyline of this series. other than that, its easy to grab your dualshock controller and play.

i cant give away any spoilers, all i can say is i cryed at the end. Yes it was that shocking and sad at the same time. it is defently the greatest game of all time on my top 10 list with Ocarina of time in second place for me.

Pros
-the line between video game and cinematics have blurred and its ALL IN-GAME thanks to the Power of the Playstation 3 with its RSX GPU and the Cell processor. the game is near CGI quality, its thats stunning!

-For any Metal Gear Fan all your questions have been answered surrounding the story

-Sound is uncompressed, it is amazing, 5.1/7.1 digital surround sound speakers recommended

-gameplay has been perfected with a first person view setting/over the shoulder 3rd person view setting and camera can freely be moved around like MGS3:subsistance with right analog stick.

-octocamo redefines how stealth is played.

-Metal Gear Online adds more gameplay to an already spellbinding, amazing single player game by adding an addictive Multiplayer component which is not only superb, but it also add a lot of value to the Package, esecially with promised Downloadable content from Konami/Kojima Productions to add more value to this mode.

cons
-To play MGO you not only have to have a PSN account, but you must register for a unique Konami ID. its pretty simple to apply though.

-the story of solid snake is over :`(

If you dont buy this game, then you are the reason why PS3 games werent selling well in the Past 2 years, thus you dont deserve one. :)

There is nothing bad to say about this game. I love the graphics, game mechanics, and the cut scenes (in all their lengthy glory), but the story is what really sells this game. The cinematic feel really draws you in. Much like Uncharted, you feel as though you're playing a movie. I've only dabbled in the previous MGS games, but I can honestly say this one is the best. The online component is interesting in that you can customize your character, but the gameplay seems pretty standard to me (that's not necessarily a bad thing). Overall, Guns of the Patriots is probably the best game to be released so far in 2008. Resistance 2, Killzone 2, and Gears 2 have got their work cut out for them.

All I can say is wow... I was kind of leery to get this game because I thought it would be like Splinter Cell. I know, I know, Splinter Cell was a favorite to many but it was too slow for me & it emphasized stealth too much. I'm also going to tell you I'm probably older than allot of you. The last Metal Gear installment I played was on the 8 bit Nintendo Entertainment system back in 1989. Wow, allot has changed since then.. The graphics in this one are AMAZING!! This game is much more fun because you can get in the middle of battle if you choose to which is more action. The weapons store is also a big plus because there is a large array of weapons you can buy. I love the shotgun by the way LOL.. The cut scenes are long, but entertaining. The plot is good & the voiceovers are good, so the lengthy scenes are ok to sit through. It's pretty cool how when a character is introduced in the game how it states their name & the name of the voice actor/actress. Just like a movie. The controls are tight, but to a person picking up the game they might be a little slow accessing the menu & the items if you are in the heat of battle. I fumbled around a bit, but it will get better as I get through the game. The only thing I don't like is there is no jump button, but you have to use the special action button to climb up on things instead. But no biggie, I'll get used to that too. I wish there was a sprint button like in COD4, because Snake moves kind of slow. Maybe it's because of his illness. I must add that was a great addition to the story too. It makes the game more realistic that the hero of the game isn't some super human soldier, but a weakened tough & gritty old war hero that is smart & calculating.. He actually will stop every once in a while & have arthritis attacks & grunt in pain & grab his lower back. How cool is that? To sum it up, I have played allot of games on this console, but this is one that I can't put down. It will get game of the year as far as I am concerned.
