Buggy piece of gameware

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 1 / 40

I picked up this game the day it was released. I have played it about 3 hours and everything was ok until the buttons stopped working. First the sounds for the buttons being pushed stopped (you couldn't tell if you had unlocked something or not); and then the "X" button stopped working so you are unable to defend yourself against attacks, even though you are carrying a huge sledge hammer. I tried rebooting the system to see if that would work, that's when other problems showed up. I would recommend that anyone who is interested in this game wait until they get the bugs out and re-release it. This game seems more of a Beta copy. Do not waste your money, get the PS2 versions and enjoy yourself.

A great addition to the Silent Hill Family

Now this review maybe a little subjective since I am an avid silent hill fan, I will try to be as objective as possible. First the review above is not a review but a complain so don't take it seriously, also there will be NO ps2 version this is an exclusive to the psp. (Much needed if I may add)

Silent Hill: Origins is about Travis Grady, a seemingly simple trucker who suffers from haunting nightmares that seem oddly familiar to him. The game starts with a visual of what appears to be a static radio frequency; Travis is talking over it to one of his fellow truckers. After the conversation the game proceeds to a cut scene where Travis is driving down the road. In the distance he sees a cloaked figure run out in front of his truck and slams on his breaks, narrowly avoiding a collision with the unknown pedestrian. Of course, once our hero exits the truck he finds the figure gone, but each time he looks in his rear view mirror he is confronted with the frightening vision of a young girl (SH fans will recognize this character as Alessa Gillespie) accompanies by eerie laughter. Once the high graphic scene ends the in-game visuals are put into effect. In front of his truck Travis spots Alessa and calls out to her, but she runs off. The player is given control and prompted to follow her. She leads Travis to a burning house, around which a suspicious woman (Dahlia Gillespie) is lurking about. Upon hearing a scream from within the flame engulfed building Travis runs inside. The player takes control of the game now and guides Travis through the house to where Alessa's charred form is lying over a red circular symbol on the floor. Despite her words 'let me burn' Travis picks up the burned girl and once more the player is in control of the game as the house is fled with Alessa in hand. Outside Travis faints in the midst of pleading for someone to help the poor girl he has just saved.

Upon awaking he decides to go to the hospital to see if Alessa made it. What he encounters at the hospital, however, is not quite what he had expected. And thus our game begins! (Original plot summary from first hand experience of the game.)

Pros:
-As always great storyline, even better dialogue. The main protagonists story (Travis
Grady) is in true SH fashion very depressing and human.

-The fighting system is great ALMOST anything can be used as a weapon from a type writer to a lamp. This provides even more realism to the SH world. Plus we finally have a character that can fight back with his fists! (Not a writer, widower, teenage girl, or renter). The monster are also very intimidating, not only on size how they look and walk.

-The graphics are amazing; the story unfolds amazingly on the psp. The sense of dread is greatly enhanced when you are playing on the psp with you headphones on. The visuals on the 3 main settings (hospital, mental hospital, and hotel) are very detailed and realistic. An example of the detail put into the game is when you kill a monster and step on his blood you leave tracks behind you as you walk.

-The score is amazing, as always Akira Yamaoka delivers the perfect sound/song to every scene in the game.

-The game length is relatively long (for the psp) from 5-6 hours on my account, exploration is fun yet terrifyingly suspenful since you never know where the monsters will come from.

-Also replay value is high since there are many achivements to be completed.

Cons:
-TOO many items and weapons. Every time I play SH I get this since of hopelessness, meaning I am alone all I have is a pipe to protect myself and a few bullets. This time I felt soo safe that it took away from the feeling that I usually enjoy. An example is, you get a machine gun in the middle of the game, when I got the gun I enjoyed it for a while but stopped using it since it felt like I was playing RE instead of SH.

-Monsters felt like they were mere copies from the movie or original games. This can be seen in the nurses and armless monsters. Also even though I enjoyed it there is a monster (The Butcher) in the game who takes an awful lot after the much beloved pyramid head. Even though I loved pyramid head I expect WAY better from SH then recycled enemies.

Overall I loved the game and would recommend it to any silent hill fan, or just someone looking to see the real POTENTIAL of the psp.

The reason I purchased a PSP

I would actually give this game 4 stars, but I'm rating it 5 to help balance the 1 star review given by someone who obviously received a faulty copy. There's always going to be faulty discs, and he made it sound like all of the copies are faulty. Clearly they're not, because I've played this game through twice so far with no problems.

Here are my simple ratings for this game:

Music : 5 out of 5. Had to start with Music, because Akira Yamaoka's work is always my favorite thing about Silent Hill games. Can't wait for the soundtrack release.
Gameplay : 4 out 5. The gameplay was pretty much the same as the other Silent Hills, which is a good thing. They were very creative with this one in the way that you could use your surroundings more to help you survive.
Story : 4 out 5. Won't reveal too much, but it was another emotion-filled story that deserves to be part of Silent Hill's history.
Voice Acting : 4 out 5. Most of the Dialogue and Voice Acting was good, but like all video games, some of it was lame.

My biggest gripe is how short it is, but I've come to expect portable games to be short. If I did my math correctly, that's 4.25 stars out of 5. Pick this game up.

Really fun game for the PSP. No problems like the poster who gave the game 1-star. Controls work great. Storyline fits in well with the other silent hill games. Definitely recommended. Right up there with the best of the PSP (dark mirror, portable ops, etc)

Great new SH for PSP only!

I'm amazed that Konami decided to do a brand new, PSP only Silent Hill game... hopefully this (and all the cool new titles coming out this month) will do a lot to boost PSP's cachet among gamers.

The game itself? SH: Origins has the nest graphics I've seen yet for the system, and all the original music, story and scares you'd expect from SH. I am ecstatic. Buy this now, and hold on tight for Silent Hill 5 for PS3!!!

Moron, there is no PS2 version, don't come here crying about your garbage of psp that likely you destroyed it. This game is sweet in all aspect, it has excellent graphics, gameplay and the control are very easy to use.

Survival Horror Done Well

This game reminds me of Silent Hill 2 in its graphic presentation and gameplay, and that's a good thing. The sound and other assorted atmospherics are eerie and unnerving. Movement is smooth and fluid. The combat system is pretty easy to pick up. The thing that's really different about this game is the ability to move back and forth between dimensions (the creepy Silent Hill and the regular Silent Hill) by touching mirrors. If you've seen the movie (or played the other games)then this certainly adds to the back story. If you're a survival horror fan, you can't go wrong with this title. It's one of the better PSP games out there.

I played (and sort of enjoyed, mostly laughed at) the first Silent Hill but haven't seen any of the others. I thought I'd give this one a try, decent PSP content is becoming very hard to find.

Frankly, this is one of the most ridiculous, boring "horror games" I've ever played. Let's see... far too short, I finished it in about five hours; horrible way-over-the-top voice acting; absolutely implausible plot; and just where the heck did this guy dig up all these overpowered weapons? It also doesn't help that the PSP's controls are abysmally poor for this sort of game.

If you're a fan of the series you might enjoy this, but I think this one has totally lost the feeling of the original--which was enjoyable mostly because I had no real idea what was going on (and the omnipresent fog was a clever way to take advantage of the PlayStation's hardware limitations). I could tolerate the original SH's bad voice acting and ridiculous plot just for the novelty value; Silent Hill Origins doesn't have that excuse.

i just got this yesterday because Amazon takes forever to ship and i preordered it back in August. Anyway, i am not that far into it but decided to leave a review of it. I agree with people that it is a good psp game, because there are few of them. Its worth buying for that reason...but its not a very good silent hill game. the graphics are pretty good but the big con that takes a lot away from the game is the characters lack that sickly look that all the silent hill games have...you know the dark circles around the eyes, sunken in and pale faces.... it just loses that freaky effect the other games have. yet they made the enemies look really good, agreeing with others that it looks like they just took the ones from the movie and repeat them over and over. I did read a review saying something about the butcher looking like pyramid head...although i haven't finished this and don't know the answer, i was under the impression it was pyramid head, maybe in his early days as this takes place before all the others.
i understand the psp is limited but i would put the power of it somewhere in the middle of the ps1 and ps2 so they should have been able to pull it off. the music is great, probably the best so far, and the sound effects are good but it really does require headphone use while playing. i don't really care for the new way that weapons break after using them. most of them break after one use of hitting an enemy a few times. plus the weapons so far are kind of lame, like finding portable tvs and big medical bottles, which each can only be thrown once, so here i am running around with 2 tvs and 4 huge bottles in my pockets. would have been a little more realistic to just have enviroment interaction and have stuff laying around that you could pick up and throw instead of being like Link from Zelda and being able to carry the world in your magic pouch. Its disappointing that they let a different company besides the original silent hill team and konami develope this game but i am still rating it high, because although it seems more like a game ripping off silent hill rather than an actual silent hill release, its still makes for a decent psp game and the release price is better than most new games.

New Scary experience of silent Hill

In the new silent Hill game the experience that can be used with the psp is fantastic. if you have the lights off and headphones on like they tell you to do when you start the game, the silent hill experience is much better than with a bigger screen. the smaller screen makes a good effect due to less light. It is a must for Silent Hill Fans. so if you are a fan of psycological Horror than this is the game for you. This game is mostly intended for a silent hill fan, so if you havent played a silent hill game you might be confused so i suggest you try one of the others before doing this one.
