Pretty good game for Godfather enthusiasts

This is a pretty good game. The storyline is entertaining and the graphics are well done. The voice acting is a nice touch and well above average.

If you like the Godfather movies you will get a kick out of playing some missions that come straight out of the movie, and if you arent a Godfather fan you will still probably enjoy the GTA style action.

I was one of 10 people from around the world (one flew in from Naples!) invited to Electronic Arts in San Francisco to preview the game, meet and talk with the game developers, and take a tour of EA's main campus.

I'm not much of gamer in general. The last console I owned was a Sega, ok? So, I nervously (yet also curiously) sat down with this game to give it a shot.

Wow. First off, the graphics were great! (Personally, I think the X-BOX version looked a little better than the PS2 version, but both were really nice. However, the PC version of course blew them both away). There was no "official confirmation" -- nor denial -- of a 360 version in the works, but I have a feeling they're working on that for a later release. Incidentally, they're also going to release a special edition which will include a DVD with special features (making-of) for the console versions.

Anyway, back to the game itself: I played mostly on the PS2 version, and have always had trouble with all those buttons. That's just me, of course. But I tell you, I had fewer problems with this game than most others I've tried -- the "Black Hand" controls were quite intuitive for once, and it never felt like I had to fumble around to find the right button.

What's unique -- and wonderful!! -- about this game is that you are NOT Vito or Michael or Sonny or anyone like that, but you are you -- your own character (that you can even create to look however you want to the most minor detail) interacting with the characters from the movie. You start out as a lowly hood and work your way up the ranks by first strong-arming shop keepers for protection money, bribing cops, and going on specific missions set forth by Clemenza or other characters. What is REALLY cool is that you can be doing your thing and at any moment, a major scene from the movie will happen, say, outside the window!

For instance, while in a shop muscling the shopkeeper, outside I saw Don Vito get shot, and my new mission was then to kill the would-be assassins before escorting the ambulance to the hospital! And what's great is, events such as these happen pretty much chronologically, and pretty true to the story -- the movie and surprisingly also the book itself.

One of my favorite features was walking down the street, and hearing passers-by having conversations! Very much like real life.

The idea of the game, of course, is to move up in rank in the Corleone family by earning money and respect. As you progress, you'll be taking control of neighborhoods and the compounds themselves of the Barzini's, Tattaglia's, Stracci's and Cuneo's (the other 4 of the 5 Families). Your ultimate goal is to be The Don of NY/NJ controlling everything.

Some of Marlon Brando's dialogue was used I was told, but they got a terrific voice actor to record bits they needed afterwards. Of course, Caan, Duvall, and Vigoda lent their voices as well, and I was told that they had a terrific time doing it! (We saw some footage of them, which will be on the bonus DVD of the special edition).

All in all, I was VERY impressed with this effort from EA! And even tho I'm not much of a gamer, this is definitely one that I will spend some time with!

I think all Godfather fans (not just gamers) will love to check this out!

Just purchased this two days ago and was alittle bit skeptical when first playing. I thought the graphics and everything could have been much better, but than after playing more and more I noticed that this game is so awesome. Lots of contracts offered that can allow u to whack the other mobsters for cash, the extortion thing is also kewl. Taking over shops and hotels, ...etc. for your own Corleone family. This game was well worth the buy and wait. The graphics are nice, but for some reason I thought that they would make it as clear as EA's other last game ( 007 from russia with love), which to me had I think the best graphics for ANY game from EA. I think that EA put more time into the game engine ( to play that monopoly style gangster takeover everything deal.....which I'm still impressed with. Great game and a must buy for mobster movie fanz as well as people who wished they could make it big with business and fame, but can't unfortanetely like the majority of us, but it's nice to put this game in and dream u were the next Capone or Dillinger. So what r you waiting for go but this game or get Whacked.

crazy fun!

First of all, when this game says "Rated M for Mature... 17 and up" they mean it. People getting shot in the face, people talking like sailors, etc.

The fact that Sonny, Fredo, Tom Hagan, and the Don all look like and sound like James Cann, John Cazale, Robert Duval, and Brando just adds to the amazingness of the game. The fact that Micheal does NOT look or sound like Pacino is almost jarring after the appearance of the other actors. I guess Pacino is too cool to be in a video game. It's especailly distracting as it kinda wrecks the possibilities of GF II or III games.

Well, everything else I would say has been said by others.

Oh! I almost forgot! Luca Brasi is in the game and played by Lenny Montana!!!! He is your mentor and teaches you how to play!

Welcome to the Family....

The Godafther:The Game is probably one of EA's best games ever released. This is also one of EA's only games that are worth something more than a decent rental.

The engine system of The Godfather is the exact same as 007:Everything or Nothing- hold the left trigger to target, the right trigger to fire. The fighting system is the exact same as the Fight Night series- move around the right analog stick to make jabs, such as a quick upward thrust of the right analog stick to make an upper jab. The game is also very similar to Spider-Man 2 and GTA in the mission styles and open-city levels.

There are some things tacked on though, such as the all new extort system. You persuade a shopkeeper and fight with him until he coughs up the money that the Corleone family is demanding. Another new idea for any EA game is some decent driving controls and physics. The game actually makes it fun to drive around, finding different missions and shopkeepers to extort.

The variety of customizations and weapons in this game is amazing. You can tailor your hair many different ways, make your face look however you please, put whatever clothes you want on, and whatever clothing accessory you are looking for. The weapons also include a tommy gun, pistol, shotgun, stub gun, baseball bat, police baton, and dynamite ( also many more ). All of these have differnt firepower or melee techniques. This variety adds to the fun.

The gameplay is also very varied. I have only went through 8 percent of the game, yet I have made multiple extortions, assasinations, time races, have done jobs for people, such as hits, and have been enrolled for a paid hit by a member of the family. There is also a respect aspect, where your goal is to gain more respect by other family members, and a heat system, where more police chase you as you gain more heat by being violent.

There are not too many bad things to say about this game except that it could be a little more polished-graphics, some control techniques, have ammo scattered MUCH more widely ( you will almost never find ammo ), and have less extrotion down time ( more planned missions ).

I personally think that this game is pretty clean. Its M rating is deserved, but not by too much. It is pretty violent ( well, yeah, it's the Godfather ), does have some blood and some very rough language. But there is no gore and ( almost ) no sexual content.

All in all, this is one of the best games I've ever played, even better than Halo 2, I think. After a long streak of really mediocre rents and purchases ( hmm hmm King Kong, Star Wars Battlefront 2 [one of the worst games ever] ), this beautiful game and a job well done. Respect....to the family.

Though most of the game concept was lifted from GTA, it still manages to come up with some original flavor into it, thanks to the unforgettable characters that made The Godfather a classic. Amazingly, the game isn't just a drive around and do missions. It actually leaves you free to walk around and do things that will affect your business as a "made-man" with the Corleone family. Yes, you have to do the missions to keep the story moving but at the same time, you can ignore the missions and just go about doing other things to increase your "business" and contribute to the Corleone family. Take for example what I did in the game. I did about 50% of the missions and I decided to just clean-up Little Italy (where the Corleone family is based) from the Tattaglias; taking over these businesses, their warehouses.

One interesting mode in the game is the "Mob War" mode. This happens when you hit a crime family too much, they eventually declare a mob war with the Corleone family. Only to win a mob war is to either bomb one of their properties or pay an FBI agent to come down hard on the rival family. It's good fun really, and quite different. I usually bomb a place and then head to my apartment and let things calm down a bit. These fresh concepts make this game quite unique in its way.

Speaking of families, you need to wrestle control of NY from all the other rival families. The biggest rival that you'll be pitted against is the Barzini family who owns Manhattan. By the way, the game recreates an almost perfect replica of New York, even the streets are accurate. I know because I'm from NYC. One trick I did to test the accuracy was fifth avenue and madison ave. Fifth avenue is just across Madision ave, which is correct in the game. Canal St. and Mott St. are real streets in NY, with Canal St. being Chinatown today.

Going back to what I am doing now with the game, I've basically knocked out Tattaglia from NY. Only thing left is go to and overrun his family compound. One important tip if you're planning to buy this game. The moment you get about $16,000 in the game, buy yourself the most expensive shoes, suits, hat, and glasses. These accessories give Bonus Respect points on your character. Very important if you want to get that extra boost of respect points to get to the top.

So is this game worth it? Yes definitely. If you are into mobster-themed games, look no further. This is almost almost real-life. By the way, prepare to die a lot in this game. This game is not easy. Be patient and keep buying those safehouses all over NY. This is where you can save your progress and start off in case you get "ICED".

I bought this game four days ago and I haven't spent much time not playing it. That is always a sign of a game that is worth buying. I have sold all of my Xbox games (with the exception of Halo 2) because I lose interest in them pretty fast, but I think I will be keeping the Godfather around for awhile.

It couldn't get any worse...

In a review submitted below, and prior to the release of this game, somebody raised a concern that it might turn out to be little more than a cheap copy of GTA. Well, that reviewer needn't have worried as The Godfather doesn't seem like a cheap copy of GTA or even a 3rd rate copy of GTA. In actual fact it seems more like an abysmal copy of another game somewhere else that had already copied Grand Theft Auto badly...and that's about the best thing I can say for it as digging further the pain just doesn't stop there.

While the both the page turning novel and epic film adaptation of The Godfather had intelligence, style and a reasonable degree of depth, the game has zero intelligence, zero style and no depth whatsoever. It is moulded in the style of throwing zombie-like pedestrians and AI-challenged enemies in your way while you go about the business of unrealistically forging a career in the mafia. You can basically steal cars (as already mentioned - just like in GTA), grab people and then waggle the left stick around on your control pad to beat them up thereby either intimidating or `icing' them, you can shoot some badly textured guns without any danger of feeling like your have ever been near a gun or a gunfight, and you can watch some utterly rubbish cut-scenes that stitch the thing together with all the grace and subtlety of a Punch and Judy retelling of the original story.

While all this is going on, of course, there are other treats to lose yourself in. Marvel as your character gets a haircut or buys some clothes (again, just as in GTA) or become steadily overawed by the addition of a skill points system that allows you to increase your ability to waggle the left stick around to greater effect or to shoot your unrealistic gun even faster. Also, you may love the truly ridiculous driving missions that are occasionally thrown your way, in which you get to pilot something that looks like a badly drawn brick around the dull and uninteresting streets, while further AI-challenged enemies swerve at you like metal lemmings in an attempt to irritate you to death.

To be as blunt as possible, The Godfather is probably the worst game I have ever played, and that is really saying something. Like EA's previous fiasco of 2006 - Black - it seems as if a fantastic idea was somehow given a lobotomy, checked through a series of Mediocrity Assurance Committees and only finally then released when it had been proved itself dumb enough not to confuse anybody with an IQ matching their shoe size. For myself, I could just about tolerate that from Black as who cares if there is one more moronic video game to avoid, but when it comes to dragging The Godfather into the sewer then I have really had enough.

To trash the memory of one of the best movies ever made by plastering a ropy narrative and a generally lacklustre game onto it is unforgivable and I sincerely hope - whoever you may be reading this - that you will feel the same. Please don't buy The Godfather as it deserves to be a black eye for the company that made it, and then perhaps the idiots responsible will be taken out of the loop for future releases.

Finally a good game from a movie

Yes Finally the gaming world has made a good game from a movie
This compares to the gameplay of the Grand Theft Auto games
You basically reenact the entire movie going through all of the classic moments
From the horse head in the bed to Micheal coming out of the bathroom and blasting away
You play as your own character in the game not Micheal you build up your rank in the family such as Capo , Underboss, then eventually to the Don of NY
Some missions are timed like in the GTA series but they are not impossible to beat
This game also kind of compares to the freedom fighters game when you are in action shooting at other mobsters
You also can take opposite family businesss in this game shooting your way in the restarunt of barber shop then you need to shake down or beat down the peron running the shop
Also in this game you can bribe police or people gaurding spots you wish to get into you give them some cash they turn there back on the situation

This game is a must for a Godfather fan and if you like ganster games of the GTA games you will love this game this is highly recomended

I was unsure if I should get this game when I asked the guy and he told me its GTA but Iam sure glad I bought it it is well worth $40

Go out and get it what r u waiting for?

Take em to the matresses!

I suppose my opinion of this game is a little skewed. Like a majority of men out there, I am a huge fan of the Godfather movies, and I have even read the book. There's no going wrong with the superb acting and amazing direction of the first two films.

I hyped this game up in my head, expecting ONLY the best Godfather experience, and I was not disappointed! For all of you who wondered "who planted the gun", or "who helped michael flee the restaurant".. your questions are creatively answered through gameplay.

It is an insult to call this game a "copy" of Grand Theft Auto. People need to wake up and realize that GTA has created a new genre of gaming. It has become a concept, a mold for fantastic gaming. One can make the case that the entire GTA game was a rip-off of Godfather itself.

Godfather is chocked FULL of details and adventures. Designing your character to a T, finding different ways to negotiate, developing your character into a tougher mafioso... these are all things that make this game wonderful. Not to forget the great references to key parts of the movie.

I REALLY loved this game, I was not disappointed at all! Ive already spent a solid 20 hours playing this game, and it hasn't been a week yet. I've completed about 89% of the missions, yet only 35% of the game. That should tell you how much there really is to do in this amazing game.

Hope this review helped!
Bill,
Detroit
