Mass Effect is one of those great games that far too many people miss because they're 'not into RPGs.' Well neither am I, but I still found it fun. Great action, great graphics, fantastic story and voice acting. Buy this game!

Best & most accurate science in a game (well, when I say accurate...)

Mass Effect

I won't reiterate what others have already said about a landmark game, but I have noticed one thing most don't mention: Mass Effect is unrivaled in its writers' grasp of classical physics, particle physics, theoretical physics (such as general relativity), and planetary geology. While most of the solar systems are theoretical, the stars, nebulae, and certainly the galaxy, are all real.

If you enjoy science at all, then you will DEFINITELY want to read all you can in-game: technology, government, planetary features. It's a wondrous thing to not only have a beautiful, realistic 3-D map of the most striking features of our galaxy, but to be able to travel to those parts on a whim.

Yeah, the technology is mostly "realistic in a theoretical sense;" I know, I know. All I'm saying is these people just know how to have fun with science.

Definitely an incredible departure from the usual fare on the XBox 360. Although some of the activities can be a little repetitious--especially some of the built-in mini-games (hence, the 4-star rating for fun), the scope and breadth of this came is breathtaking.

I have already played it all the way through twice. Once with a conscious effort on remaining "good" (or a Paragon in the game's parlance) and once on being "bad" (or Renegade). Although many of the missions will be successful either way, it is extremely entertaining to influence the plot merely be selecting "good" or "bad" responses and actions.

This game has some FPS elements to it, squad control elements, magic-like powers and unique weapons systems, and RPG elements to it. It is a superb accomplishment to bring all of these different genres together in a cohesive whole.

Now, if you are a die-hard fan of any particular genre (fast twitch FPS, MMORPGs, or squad games) you may not be satisfied with the treatment of your particular favorite within the overall scheme--the FPS combat is not going to satisfy the hardcore multiplayer HALO 3 and Gears of War fans out there, for example. However, if you approach it more like a smorgasbord of video game play than a flagship of any one particular type of game, then you will have hours of fun ahead of you.

They've already created an add-on module available via download from XBox Live (currently priced for 400 Microsoft points), but I haven't yet played it and cannot speak to its (probable) goodness.

So, go forth, Spectres, kick Reaper butt and come along for the ride...then rinse and repeat.

I'm on my 70th Hour of Game Play

This is, by far, one of my favorite games ever. I have invested over 70 hours of gaming into it and am on my 3rd play through of the storyline. The downloadable content on XBox Live is superb. The popularity of the game has resulted in 2 books, the planning of "at least" two more sequels, and much more.

The slanderous statements made by some news channels, claiming it is full of sex and violence, is ridiculous. Once the reporters actually played the game, they retracted their statements. Although there is a slightly questionable scene, it is no worse than anything on FOX or WB.

For anyone with an Xbox 360, this is a MUST buy.

Playing the game for the second time through. I just hope Bioware keeps giving us more missions to download.

It's like being in a movie!

This game is really cool. I wasn't sure what I would think of it when it first arrived from gamefly.com. But, after playing it for a couple of days I can say it's one of the best I've ever played. It is so much like being in a sci fi movie/novel that you really get into it. When I first took command of the Normandy and deliver a speech to the crew I have to admit I was really moved. The visuals are amazing and the entire game is very cinematic. Cut scenes are almost indistinguishable from the regular game play. I highly recommend this game to anyone who is looking for a game "experience" and not just an ordinary game.

Finally a RPG that /acts/ like a MMO

In several video games (notably online), you are given options in a course of a single quest. This decides what happens in the quest, but, ultimately, it will all lead to the end.

This is what Mass Effect is. Finally a video game that isn't meant to be an RPG standalone acts completely like a MMORPG with FPS. We are able to decide the fates of mankind. We are able to decide the fates of several other races. We are given the option to be a strong leader, emotionless, or a terrible leader.

This game has amazing replay value. The only bad thing about the game is the repetitive-like planets when you have to drive through with the Mako.

I have never written a review for a game before but I felt I needed to. It think people would like to hear what a father, student, and someone who works 30 hours would rate this game (mostly because if you are limited to time and money which I am then you would like to read this review). I bought this game with the game guide to make it as fun as I could. When I heard about this game I was very excited. I am a big fan of bioware ever since they did star wars knights so I was hoping to get as great as a game. overall the game I thought was fun. The story line was gripping and it keep me wanting to play. The powers you get in the game and the friendships with your other characters were increadible. That being said I felt it was a bit of a step back for bioware. In a way I felt that they took the same story from star wars knights and changed it to fit new charactors. the ablity to use powers, some outerspace war with the evil power that you never get to see, deep charactor interactions, and massive story lines. The problem is it did not live up to star wars. The story line was very short. Star wars would take me a month to complete and this one I can do in one day. The side quests were boring and repetive. I am the type of gamer that likes to do everything I can in a game no matter how long it takes (to get my moneys worth) but I found after a few hours of just side quests I was bored. I did them all including finding all gasses, lands, ect. After about 10 worlds I could do everything blindfolded and in my sleep. Star wars knights had lots of side quests but they were intergrated in the world you were on and they were fun. Everytime I play star wars I do them all but in mass effect after I did them once I was done.

I have thought that this was a way for bioware to finish the story of jedi nights without the jedi but if they make a mass effect 2 I would hope they have the story line much longer and the side quests more stimulating. It does no good to have tuns of worlds if they are mostly the same in style and missions. I would have much reathered have 6 worlds but more to do on that world. It was a waste of time for me to take 10 minutes in loading screens and finding then next planet I wanted to go to only to have one thing to do and 3 things to find on each world.

Overall it was a great game and gave me something to play while I await the realse of the one I really want knights 3 (if it ever happens) I would say buy this one but not for the full 60 bucks.

The action RPG genre is redefined...again.

BioWare has redefined the action RPG genre four years after releasing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for the Xbox. This game builds on familiar themes of affecting the game world with the choices made within the game, main quest with hundreds of sub quests, NPCs with stories that tie together, space travel, and movie grade voice acting and character development. On top of that, they add voice read and text descriptions of the world three centuries from now. The backgrounds of technology, alien races, political situations (past and present), all meld together to form a world that is extremely thought out.

Until you play this game, you simply cannot fathom the scale of this game. The meld of an action game with RPG elements is perfect in this game. The action sequences are quick (especially with all the upgrades, RPG element) and the RPG elements are straight forward and are there to advance the story line.

The graphics and sound are pretty amazing even though there are glitches in both the graphics and sound engines. Though it would have been extremely time consuming to design unique worlds, BioWare did their best to vary the story line between missions on similar looking planets. The main world you explore which contains the Citadel (along with the worlds that advance the story line) are all fleshed out and extremely large. Exploring all of the Citadel and subplots from helping out NPCs will chew up days and weeks of your time. Every line of dialogue in the game is spoken.

The control scheme is walking in third person and shooting in first person. The menus are extremely easy to use (both weapons and abilities). I didn't run into any game glitches which would have caused me to restart a level or the game. I did run into a few instances where someone in my party didn't feel like walking with me towards the end of the game. This was fixed by walking back and gathering that person or re-entering a drivable vehicle in the game.

The weapons and abilities are varied. I played through the whole game using more of a marine character (rather than one that uses abilities). I am not sure if I'll be able to find the time to play through again with a character that uses abilities. If you have any interest in science fiction or the action RPG genre, you owe it to yourself to pick up this gem.

For both the hardcore and casual gamer, you can finish the game in under 40 hours or well over 40 hours. The choice is yours!

Wow
