Good single player

This is the first Xbox 360 edition of a franchise I have played since PS2. I enjoyed the single player campaign quite a bit. Handling was decent and controls made a good transition to the new platform.

What's not to like?

I didn't play the previous versions of the game, I started with 6. It is a BLAST. The planes are cool and the fighting is FUN. The graphics are AMAZING. I don't understand some of the other negative reviews. Yes the cut scenes are silly but they have a certain melodramatic humor to them, and we buy video games for the game play, not the cut scenes.

I needed something good after BioShock, it took me a while to find this game and now that I have I'm digging my Xbox again.

GO ACE COMBAT 6!

Not the best in the series

The differences between this one and AC-4, AC-5, AC-0 I think are that the graphics in terms of terrain, missile trails, and planes are superior, but the missions are much, much longer and divided into multiple parts. This is not all good or bad, but different. At times it's nice to be able to start from the last "checkpoint", rather than go through a long, tedious mission until you get to the next phase, etc. You can get a little worn out or lose your peak interest during the mission. I don't have HD-TV, I'm not sure if that matters, but I found it hard to visualize the target box and its ID on foilage-covered terrain. I couldn't even tell sometimes which target I was locked onto (unless a dust or smoke cloud obscured the ground, then, strangely, the target box stood out clearly.) Unlike most other reviewers, I sort of liked the story and the story board. I bought an XBox360 just for this game and although playing the game was OK, in retrospect it was not worth my additional expense. But, if you're a fan of the series, what are you going to do? I do hope Namco makes some changes in the next game. Anyone know how to pass suggestions on to them? There are many things I think they did not do well in terms of programming the characteristics of flight, etc., too many to list here. Overall, the game is "OK" and if you're a fan of the series, you should get it. Perhaps playing on an HD-TV makes it more worthwhile.

It's ok I guess...

The game starts off well. It's immersive and entertaining. The graphics are stunning and the music adds a nice touch. However, this game all of a sudden falls flat on it's face. I did not play the other games. I'm new to the series, but not to flight sims, arcade or not. The game made for a fun experience but then it just becomes almost impossible. The alerts for incoming missiles becomes so annoying that I thought about throwing my controller for the first time in 20 years. The wingmen and the rest of your squadron are completely useless. The wingman also doesn't shut up the entire time. It's such a disappointment because you go from an absolute winner, to some of the worst gameplay in recent memory. A game is supposed to be challenging, not ridiculously repetitive and aggravating. Also, don't even bother paying attention to the story. It has all the cliches of a bad writing and voice acting. Just skip it all together and play the missions.

Fans of the game will probably love this game, but if you're new to it, be warned. It's pretty and fun for a while, then falls apart.

great game

This is a great game, but the story is simple, too simple. The plot is sometimes touching, but mostly plain.
The graphic is fantastic. I'll recommend to get a widescreen LCD, the graphic detail will look amazing.

Fun - but not a little too short

I think I pretty much agree with everyone else who reviewed this game. It's a fun game, especially when you consider that there aren't very many flight combat sims/shooters for the XBox. And one can't get over the beauty of the photo-realistic scenes you're immerse in at every mission. I'm not ashamed to say that I almost cried the first time I played a demo of this game on my 42" Plasma HDTV. However, the game is a little too short. Plus there isn't much replay value. In addition, the cut scenes (that help fill in the storyline) used dated graphics that really pale in comparison to the graphics used in the missions.

Overall, I'd still enthusiastically recommend this game. It just could have been better.

good game. bad amazon.

if you have played any AC games before you will like this game. story is dumb so i always skip it. i beat the game on normal now working through expert. played online for a little while. its really fast game play online.

the one thing that is driving me crazy is the fact that i pre-ordered this game a month ahead of time as well as COD4. i got the game almost 2 weeks after the game was released. i will NEVER PRE-ORDER AGAIN FROM AMAZON!! COD4 has an estimated ship date 4 days after the release. i pre-ordered GH3 but picked a different company and got the game the day after the release. i dont understand why its taking so long.

Not that Great

I've been playing games for a while now, and my only experience with ace combat was the original ace combat for the Playstation. That game is better than this one. While the planes, environments, and scenery are all lushly detailed and such, and the simulation of flying is quite fun, the rest of the game is just bad. Cutscenes involve characters that have nothing to do with your character, and the dialogue could not be less interesting if they had just left it in Japanese. Your wingman is an idiot, who refuses to provide any cover. Your allies are idiots that will most certainly die without your guidance. Certain enemies are nuclear physicists who can fly rings around you and destroy you in a heartbeat. Missiles lock on to you and your ever helpful wingman yells that they've got a lock on you in your ear, if the red screen and annoying buzzing noise wasn't enough. But the main problem in this game is that it simply fails to capture your interest. The story isn't engaging and neither is the gameplay, leaving very little to do once you beat the game. It's a mediocre sequel that really could have done with some A.I. and cutscenes that that actually made you care. This game is worth a rental, if you're into aerial dogfights, but it's simply not worth buying. Maybe they can clean up 7 from the uninteresting mess that is Fires of Liberation.

3/5

Realism to Unrealistic

Overall the game is fun but the storyline in the campaign mode is a bit corny. For a good bit of the game it is mildly realistic but in the final battle it is totally ridiculous. Flying an F15 at 1500 knots and the enemy planes fly circles around you. You watch the radar screen as they pull away from you at three times your speed. That means they're flying at 4500 knots? The game does not autosave your progress when you reach checkpoints throughout the game so if you choose to end your session and do something else like go to bed, when you start again you'll have to fly the entire mission again . . . and again. That gets rather boring and tedious. To really enjoy this game you have to have absolutely nothing better to do but sit and play it for hours on end. I would rate it a 4 out of 10.

A good Game

If you like the other Ace combat games you'l enjoy this one. Its a cool game overall, but lacks the large selection of Fighters and cool Camo's we had to unlock. You get a wingman to help but he doesnt do to much. Plus the story and radio chatter gets annoying when they refer to the Dog Fights as "Dancing with the Angles". Its a great thing that you can mute it.
Graphics look great but the replay value stinks. I found myself not really wanting to play it again once I finished it on Hard then unlocked Expert(You get Ace after that). Namco will be allowing you to download thing off xbox live, and they have a few skins right now but not much. The online play is cool at times but you get into a room and everyone is useing the F-22. I expected that much once I saw which planes were available. They have a co-op but it not like that of Halo 3 which would have been sweet. I miss the Su-35/37 and the F-4.
True fans will not be let down by the game, but I'd tell anyone else to rent it first.
