For a Conan franchise....it's a start.

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 9 / 9

ok...this will be brief...

This game is a lil' something to do between now and Assasin's Creed.

While it won't win awards as the greatest hack n slash adventure ever....still...it's Conan....this is almost what the Barabraian's portion of Golden Axe would have been.

It's a change of pace from all of the FPSs that have/are flooding the market right now

The good

- excellent graphics

- if you are into button mashing, this is right up your alley

- different fighting styles with upgrades possible thru the use of combos

- Yes....there are naked women, so this could be a con if you are a concerned parent.

The cons

- Combos can be broken and AI could have been better

- needed a better variety of weapons

- so far most of the enemies are the same.

- No multiplayer

Another gripe is that as visceral as this game is, the camera nevcer really gets up close as you dismember the enemy. There are heads flying arms cut off guts ripped out but sometimes you are sooo busy hacking away that you really don't get to enjoy it.

This game would have benefitted more from an interesting upgrade/ loot system or even a multiplayer system, heck it could have benefitted by ripping some pages from Diablo, but for now...it's enjoyable until far more interesting titles come along.

I give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Decent button masher

Gratuitous thong and bare-breasted babes + heads lopped off baddies = truly a wish fulfillment world, perfect for a video game. The artwork is really outstanding done in a Frank Franzetta/Boris Vallejo style. The music score is excellent, a nice combination of Basil Poledouris soundtrack and Peter Gabriel's Last Temptation of Christ. Some really nice tribal drums... very well done. The majority of levels truly recreate Hyboria as Howard imagined it, and fighting is done with cinematic flair... finishing moves slow down in a '300' style... the tank-style hack'n'slash is what you expect from a title with Conan as the main character.

Some gripes... the boss battles are very tedious to deal with. Literally 10-20 minute affairs that are NOT enjoyable in the least, and only annoying Carpal Tunnel inducing activities. While in the regular part of the game, it's frustrating that your combos can be easilly and cosistently broken... in boss battles, you're lucky to get off one hit before constantly having to run to the corners of the screen. Very annoying. There's also some lame puzzles and 1-2 frustrating "double jump to the ledge" situations where the game just flat out wasn't properly beta tested so you have to do these over and over. There's also a one section where it looks like they ran out of cut scene art and got the illustrator from Dora the Explora to help out... I kid you not. The worst error is... Conan uses magic... wtf??? I purposely didn't use it because it's not even needed. Conan can dispatch almost everyone and everything with weapons, fists, boulders and torchs. The magic isn't even good or satisfying anyway, it seemed like a noob aid.

So with all my complaints this is what's good: very satisfying depiction of a Robert E. Howard Conan world (ignoring the magic use). The underground caverns, desert, and architectural scenes were impressive, and weaponry, monsters, and enemies were nicely done. You even fight lions, and those move and react very realistically. It looks really good. General fighting is satisfying, and voice acting by Claudia Black (of Farscape) and Ron Perlman give it a very solid feel. There's a decent amount of levels, giving players a good 8 hours of non-stop gameplay.

Having never played God of War (the game critics seem to be bashing this for copying) I think it's not bad, I wish they had gone the extra mile to add a few things such as multi-player or gladiatorial combat. This could have been done easily as one early boss battle is essentially a pit battle with legions of red shirt noob attackers, that would have been fun as a separate mini-game. Simple changes like making weapon speeds vary depending on the type you use would have been nice. (The 2-handed weapons range from claymores to scimitars to giant pole axes, yet all move with same speed?) My only other minor complaint is the whole thing is set in a vague Arabian/African region... it would have been nice to see one level in Cimmeria with some snow... maybe in the sequel.

A title I'll definitely go back to on rainy days to get my camel punch on, and will definitely skip the boss battles.

Another Good Game From THQ

OK, the first game I played by THQ was Titan Quest on my computer. I loved it, a good game that reminded me a lot of Diablo. This game is also made by THQ. Conan is a Diablo meets Ultimate Alliance game. The game play is simple, the buttons easy to use, and there is some thinking that you have to do. You just don't go through the whole game killing, you have to figure out how to climb, jump, grapple, and then there are all the extra moves that you can purchase with skill points. I have only played this game for about three hours but I can tell you this, I love it and continue to play it and I recommend this game to anyone who likes a hack and slash combined with the screen movement and game play of Ultimate Alliance or X-Men.

Very buggy

This game is very buggy. Several times, Conan got stuck in the air after jumping next to the wall. Once I had to reboot the game because he got permanently stuck in the air. During the elephant boss battle, after jumping to the upper corner of the rock, the camera got stuck pointing below and can't see Conan. And, the controls are terrible because it frequently have problem with jumping at an angle.

Good Conan with minor glitches

Do not be fooled this is a good start in the new Games for the Conan series. Anyone who expects more than a hack and slash out of this comic book icon should just go play a different game like one of the splinter cells or Oblivion the only problem I found with it was the sub-par graphics for his release onto the 360 one would think they would up the quality in their graphics, but to recap it is a fun game that is quite entertaining with an OK storyline.

Robert E. Howard would be proud

I have always been a fan of Conan, with the exceptions of the aweful movies. I think this game captures the spirit of Conan as depicted by his two greatest writers Robert E. Howard and L. Sprauge DeCamp. The graphics are beautiful in most of the game. There are glitches. The bare breasted women were a nice addition to go along with the beautful landscape scenes. This game reminds me of the Spawn game called Armeggedon. I loved that game (Spawn had more fancy weapons). In short, I highly recommend it as something to keep you busy until MASS EFFECT is released later this month.

Not bad, not the best

I am a casual gamer and I used to love the Conan comics, so I bought this game to give it a try.

Pros: If you want to "hack n slash" this is the game for you. The combat engine is great, with great moves. Conan using magic is a bit odd, and the purist will do without for the most part.

Cons: If you are expecting "oblivion" you will be disappointed. There is very little if any "free roam" you do not have control over the camera angle, so it is a little nerve racking sometimes. The "jumping" puzzles can be a little annoying as are some of the boss battles.

Overall I thought the game was entertaining with a short learning curve, but it lacks the scope and freedom of oblivion.

Fun for a distraction, doesn't last long

From what I remember of Howard's novels of Conan, his writing painted extremely vivid pictures of the world he described. The game Conan honors this in presenting the game with beautiful graphics, extreme violence, and lots of fun. I would agree with other reviewers who said that the boss battles were tedious. Generally, other aspects of the game (running around killing hordes of enemies) were extremely fun and visually entertaining. Learning new combinations of moves is also a lot of fun.

On the down side, the game is quite short relative to other adventure games for Xbox 360, finishing after about 7 hours. It's fun enough that there is some replay value, but I'm not sure that $60 is worth it. I would wait until this comes down to about $40 or even $30. Otherwise, it's a lot of fun.

CONAN

CONAN is a pretty decent game. It's not perfect, but it is a lot of fun and that's what counts. The graphics are topnotch, so all the bare breasts and over the top violence comes out with wonderful visual flair. Pretty much all you will be doing in this game is smashing out at enemies and randomly rescuing half naked women until you get to a boss battle at which point you will be angry for about 30 minutes.

The last battle is one of the cheapest, most repitative boss battles I've ever played. It took me a good 45 minutes to finish and I can't remember the last time I was so angry. But other than that, the other boss battles aren't so outrageous, it's just a matter of taking a bit to figure out what exactly the game intends for you to do.

There are some pretty brutal combos, but unfortunately most of them only really work on weaker enemies. Later in the game, once you've unlocked all your moves and have gotten used to them, these weak enemies are nowhere to be seen. You can still get a handful of combos out, and if you manage to stun the enemy you can get the ones you get on weak enemies, but by the last couple of levels I was mostly using three or four combos that actually still worked. A lot of the time, though(and this was a problem with that final boss bottle), I'd just end up getting a ton of enemies pouncing on me interrupting every single combo so that all I could do was quick strike and dodge. However, even doing that I still managed to whip out some really vicious violence and dismemberments.

Speaking of dismemberments, there are wonderful achievements, such as getting 100 dismemberments, 100 enemies thrown to their death, 100 enemies killed by boulder throws, etc. It really works to keep your variety up more.

Despite the fact that alot of times I wasn't able to get the combo I wanted out and that the boss battles weren't really fun, I enjoyed the game as a whole a lot. It's pure streamlined carnal violence with barebreasts thrown in, obviously because what guy can resist extreme brutality with breasts on the side.

Probably not really worth the full new release price, but I don't mind that I bought it within the first few days of its release. The game is a bit short, but really, I think six hours was enough. The game didn't start to drag because of this, which I think may have been a problem if it had actually continued on a few more hours.

As for replay, I'm going to be going back on the different difficulties to try it out for the achievements and I'm going to shoot for all the different death achievements. If I didn't have the achievements, though, it would just be good for some random slashing whenever I was bored.
