Good but not Great

This game is relatively fun and challenging but it just does not fulfill all of the ratings. The battle system for this game is akward and against some bosses can be annoying.

Great game, but needed more work

This is a great game to play. The only problem is that there is no local multiplayer or co-op mode like you would find in Halo. It's a mix between Halo and MechWarrior. Lots of snow!!
This version is cool because you can get an exclusive multiplyer map for Xbox Live.

The online play saves this title...

I had already purchased this game (collector's no less) before the reviews came out and was only able to play it once or twice because I grew bored with it so quickly. Finally, I decided to give it a shot and play it all the way through to be fair to both the game and my wallet.

Disappointing really sums up how I felt about the campaign. It's been said but bears repeating - the story is laughable, think "2nd grade writing contest." The graphics are good, not great - I consider GOW great in comparison. I was getting ready to just toss it to the side in favor of GOW - but then decided to give online a shot.

Wow, online battles totally saved this game from being a disaster. Online is extremely fun, fast paced, and user friendly. The maps are plentiful, huge, and beautiful. Worth the price of the game just for the online experience - the closest thing to Halo for the 360 yet.

If you play online, you owe it to yourself to at least give this a rental shot. Don't buy if for the main game, buy it for the online battles. I still prefer to GOW on all levels to this, but the online battles really are fun and very different from GOW.

5 Stars for online fun. (2 for campaign)
3 Stars overall (saved by online play)

Very fun with a few problems

There are several things I like about this game. The main one is the Vital Suits, VS, which are like big combat mechs you can ride around in and fight with, lots of fun. On the one player game the main thing I like is the huge boss battles. The bosses all look great and are fun to fight. The game has several difficulty settings. The "normal" mode isn't too hard but it also has a hard mode and an extremely hard mode if you're up for a challenge. Of course the multiplayer is fun. It has different modes to keep things interesting.

There are a few problems that keep this game from being better. The first is that you walk very slow. This problem is alleviated some by the use of a grapple that you can use to quickly move around in the multi-player stages, but in the one player there isn't as much to grapple on to. The second problem is the enemy AI. Even on the hardest difficulty the enemies all seem rather stupid. This makes the game on normal difficulty seem really easy, but the game can still be very difficult on the harder modes. A third problem is the story suffers a little from bad localization.

The main thing that makes this game different is the use of thermal energy. In the one player game you are able to use the "harmonizer" to refill your health using thermal energy. In the multiplayer you don't have this option and only use the thermal energy to power VS and energy weapons. In the one player if you run out of thermal energy you will lose health until you refill it or die, but running out in multiplayer only means you can't use a VS or energy weapons until you refill. You get thermal energy from every enemy you kill, from "way points", and from T-energy storage containers. On multiplayer there are specific places you can stand at to fill your energy. You continue to lose thermal energy while walking around and you use even more while using a VS. This help balance out the game and you must consider your T-energy when deciding whether to use a VS or Energy weapons.

Overall the good in this game out does its shortcomings. I really enjoy playing this game and would encourage people to give it a try.

On another note, I bought this special edition. It comes with some artwork and a bonus online stage. I believe this "exclusive" stage has been made available to people who didn't buy the collectors edition. There are some thing you can download to your pc, such as a lost planet skin for windows media player. These are nice but not worth the extra money. The metal box the game comes in is awesome! If I were buying it again though, that wouldn't be enough to sell me on the special edition. Probably anyone interested would be better to get the regular edition.

Never ending fun!

I own this game, along with halo 2, preorder halo 3, gears of war, chrome hounds, and several other games. This game is awsome. I own the collectors edition. The only thing that bugs me is that there is only co-op and multiplayer online. I rather have a split screen. Besides that the story, graphics, and gameplay are all great. Get this game.

I bought this game and played it all the way through on single player and it was about a 4/5 star game. It has great graphics, great gameplay but needed something else. Well then I played multiplayer on Xbox Live and this should have a 10 star rating, this is by far the best online gameplay of any game I have played to date, even better than Gears of War.

Why collector's edition?

I bought the collector's edition of Lost Planet because I always like to view the special features on the second disc. Only problem is, the second disc is set up like nothing I've ever seen before, and I can't figure out how the heck I'm supposed to use the darned thing! Also, the inside of the package that holds the discs in place is a literal pain to use. You will tear your thumbs up trying to get the discs out. I had to start storing the main game disc in a separate box so I could actually use it without destroying my thumbs. On the other hand, at the time I bought the collector's edition, it was actually cheaper than the regular edition, so that's always a good reason to buy something. Just be aware of the problems stated above.

As for the game itself, it's pretty good, but some of the bosses are REALLY hard (one in level three is optional, but worth 50 Gamerpoints to beat), and the picture isn't all that great on an SDTV (Capcom Xbox 360 games are made specifically for HDTV's and text is often very hard to read on SDTV's). I'm planning to get an HDTV in the near future, and that should clear up that problem. So if you like a challenging third-person shooter and you have an HDTV, this should be a game well worth your money.
