Hoyle card game 2008 will not install on Vista. I know it says so on the package. Dont buy it if all you have is Windows Vista. It works OK with Windows XP.

Don't order this game if you have an HP computer

I recently bought 2 copies of this game. My brother's copy installed and works fine on his Dell desktop running Windows Vista. My copy installed and works fine on my Toshiba laptop running Windows XP. Neither copy will install on HP Pavilion running Windows XP. It crashes the computer everytime I try to install it.

This is the only Hoyle game that has not worked on my desktop computer. It is also the only game of any kind that was designed to work with XP and hasn't worked.

Play it!

Hoyle Card Games 2008
One of the first games I learned to play as a kid was Solitaire. I am a senior citizen now and found a way to play Spades when I am alone.
This software has always been first rate and I spend a lot of time on my computers and find that taking a break to play a card game a valuable way to relax and sometimes solve a computer problem that is bugging me by doing so.
This software is worth the cost

This is best Hoyle so far, much improved over the last one I bought in 2006. Works fine on VISTA. You have to trial & error your way around sometimes, but overall it is very sophisticated with lots of card games and variations. It is a good buy. It does come with a very good manual, so take time to read it for each game you want to play, saves lots of grief.

Adults: Get out that old Tarot deck and play...

The standard Tarot card decks (78 cards) now have a gaming use, beside fortune telling.

Ok, sorry for Francophile babbling about one game, but it is my by far favorite :).

Actually there is only one dedicated English language Tarot playing software online that I know of, but this suite costs the same and has 70 games.

Hoyle has full screen (for using the whole screen in widescreen laptops and monitors), high resolution, sound support. Not exactly rare features in today's commercial boxed games, but many downloadable card games don't have these simple features.

Tarot is much easier than say contract Bridge and even easier than games like Canasta. What I like about it is that it's ancient, historical, and it puts our paper Tarot decks to good use when running across the border into Canada, after learning on the computer.

You can find Tarot decks for sale online (real cards) that are replicas from the 1400's and 1500's. Obviously these are colorful and interesting to look at, and much different from modern divination decks. No, these are completely differently themed. That is, for instance instead of a new age "Hierophant" card, we have a real Renaissance Pope.

Another thing you can do after virtually learning with Hoyle: play real humans online at various French or Canadian sites. Once you learn the game specific terms, you can navigate the popup boxes asking things like; 'Prise/Garde' (declare normal or double points this round).

By the way, the online French sites have a 100 or so players round the clock in free play tables of various skill levels; yes, there are a very few gambling sites if you must look around for them.

The one negative is that the Hoyle Tarot deck has only one graphic version, near as I can tell. But the numbers 1,2,3,...21 are all there on the edges, so you can identify the trump suit cards just fine, even if your real decks are pictured differently.

If your favorite game is somewhat rare, and if its also in Hoyle, this software might also be for you. It won't beat the dedicated competition in Bridge or Hold 'Em (obviously).

2008, complete, easy, basic, as expected

Easy to read, Games are listed. Kings corners, and the card game "500" (not Rummy 500) are NOT on this release. I did learn how to play Canasta after 39 years of not playing. Powerful, takes over my computer completely. Hours of entertainment to relax by. 50 different Solitaire.
My grandchildren love the facial creation area, where they can choose everything from the eyebrows, mouth hair, color etc. Be sure to get the CD/DVD version. Comes with the thick "how to" book. games are complete, although you can purchase different card backs and styles.

If you enjoy playing card games, and who doesn't, this is a great product to purchase! If you are a beginner or not familiar with some of the games, Help, or the Book that comes with the CD, is very informative.

disappointing

Disappointed in the quality of programming. For example, in spades, the characters routinely make dumb plays -- last one playing uses a high spade rather than a low one or the partner has played an ace and will take trick but the character uses a spade even though the trick would be taken by the team. The poker game often results in similar hands being dealt (e.g., 3 pairs of 5s over 6 hands) which seem to defy statistical odds. The programmed verbiage gets old quick (how often does one need to hear "let me see,........check"). Could use a decent version of hold 'em - the "video poker" edition was found lacking.

Not worth the upgrade

It's a great game - but I had the older version and was just as happy with it. This was harder to install and the features in this "updated version" weren't much different than the older one. I could have saved the money and kept the old one. Also, it would have been nice if the high scores and the charachter I had created for myself in the previous version were transferred to the upgrade.

If you are purchasing this for the first time - it is totally worth it. But if you are expecting something new and different by upgrading to this verion, you will be dissappointed.

Reality bites, literally...Odds favor the computers' players not the challenger.

Illustrations and animation are exceptional. Ability to create a self image is fun. Drawback is that the player gets lousy cards, especially the Bridge Hands!
