Fun, moderately silly racer with good amounts of realism

Speed Devils has a lot of aspects that make it seem like a sillier, cartoony sort of racer, but it still keeps up in the gameplay area, with impressive terrain simulations and superb environmental mods such as weather.

While its tracks don't approach the world aspect of Beetle Adventure Racing for the N64, there's still plenty of interesting diversions such as a T-rex in Hollywood, a tornado in Louisiana, and flying saucers that actually attempt to levitate you up in Nevada. The gameplay is obviously not on the lines of Gran Turismo, but it's adequately fun. One aggravating aspect of the game is the fact that cars have 3 documented statistics, Acceleration, Speed, and Braking. While handling seems to scale somewhat with braking, it's largely a mystery.

The place where Speed Devils really shines is the simulation of weather affects, such as rain and varying degrees of snowy roads. The addition of night driving was interesting when coupled with car damage. This makes it quite a task to keep your headlights not broken when driving at night in snow.

The personality of the different racers is a nice touch, along with them making bets with you (really, the best way to make quick money in the game).

All in all, Speed Devils is a fun racer.

Must...stop...driving...Oooohhh!

Speed Devils is a real tight little racer with a lot of big ideas. This underhyped game puts you in some of the most creative and enjoyable environments seen outside of Soul Caliber. I have gotten a kick out of the Hollywood disaster track where you race through a tinsel-town on the virge of armageddon, and avoiding the crashing UFOs on deserted Nevada highways. Great arcade feel and some seriously risky gambling make for an intense experience. Lots of nitro boosts and long drops add to the fun. Free hint: this is fun with your friends, at the Hoover Dam, try to drive off the road in such a way as to flip the car upside down by the time it hits the water. Hit replay after a few minutes of this and enjoy your own Dukes of Hazzard. You can also see who's car does the most 360's when you drive into the hurricane in Louisiana. Sound like fun? It is.

Addictive fun!!!

Speed Devils is the best video game I have ever played. Words simply cannot do justice to the unexpected, thrilling beauty of the different tracks or the organic, in-control feel of the interface between the controller and the car on screen. I have twelve Dreamcast games. When people come over eager to see the new Sega system, I show them Speed Devils first.

Who wants real anyway ?

C'mon people, this is a video game not an exercise in physics. This game is the first racing game I've enjoyed. After buying Crazy Taxi and playing it an hour I put it away and plugged Speed Devils back in. With the choice of automatic or shift and a wide variety of cars that are all modifiable (with cash winnings of course) and several varying conditions and courses, I'm impressed. Those who seek realisam on a video game, well let me say I get enough of that on the freeway going to work.

Creative, Fun, Long lasting, Wow what a game!

I have never been a racing fan but i bought this game out of desperation for something new. This game RULES! I have never played such a great racing game and the depth and fun factor is amazing! One of the great things about this game is placing bets with other racers such as "Win 5 seconds ahead of me" and other stuff like that to get more money to buy better cars. The only downside to this game is that the cars are not licensed cars, but you can still easily tell the difference (the Firebug is a souped up VW Bug.. etc...) The graphics stand out great in this game and are truly amazing and the music helps set the racing mood as well. I am very impressed with everything they jammed onto that little disc and very happy i bought it.

I haven't enjoyed a racing game this much in years. If you enjoy games like Crusin' USA (I've dropped many a quarter into that one) or Screamers for the PC, you have to get this.

The graphics are excellent, and the gameplay (even though I don't have a steering wheel yet) is awesome. I got the game at the discounted price, figuring that if I didn't like it, I wouldn't be wasting that much cash: I haven't played anything else since.

My girlfriend had one complaint about it: the tracks are a little long. I don't share her view, and I'm sure that when she learns to keep from crashing into stuff she'll agree.

All in all, a MUST HAVE for a dreamcast owner.

When the price of Speed Devils dropped to ..., I figured I had nothing to lose by buying the game. Since I didn't pay that much for the game, I wasn't expecting too much either. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised!

For a first-generation title, Speed Devils is an incredibly impressive racing game! For gamers who really love to drive fast, this game satisfies that urge. The tracks are very well-designed, offering plenty of fun and the control and handling of the cars are just perfect. But the one thing that blew me away were the incredible graphics in this game, which are simply stunning! Change the time setting to sunset, go to many of the stages and you will know what I mean. This game has the best-looking skies I've ever seen in a game, and Ubi Soft should be commended on that. I was just very, very impressed with the beautifully rendered, detailed graphics in this game, and I've seen my share of great graphics on the Dreamcast.

If you're looking for a fun and furious arcade style racer with some unique humorous touches and plenty of eye-popping visuals, Speed Devils is just the ticket!

This has gotta be the best car racing game for DC yet. No, it doesn't have the precise racing physics that some games do, but for pure racing fun with some interesting twists (like driving between the T. Rex's legs), this one's tough to beat. The add-ons and gambling make for a nice championship mode, and the driving has enough of a challenge to make the game more than a play-once-and-put-on-the-shelf title like many of the DC titles.

Worth The Money

I bought this game for about ten bucks, and it was worth every penny. I figured, what the heck, I can't lose for ten bucks. I have been hooked since I first placed it in my console. The graphics are great and make you really feel like you are there. Even the music and sound effects are great.

Tip...in championship mode, stay in the first class as long as you can to earn easy money. It also helps that you'll get to know the three tracks in this class like the back of your hand. Don't go buying cars that are just a couple upgrades above what you start with, just to get another upgraded car later. That burns money because you never get what you paid for the car. With just a couple upgrades on your car (top speed I and tires. Tires can be used on other cars, top speed I can't), you can win every race (and bet) and then get THE BEST car and all the upgrades for it. If you don't, you'll find the next class rather hard. The drivers and cars get MUCH better, and you need a car that can keep up.

I would suggest this game for everyone.

Craig
