Fantastic

This game is exciting and addicting. I'd even say that it tops Twilight Princess.

The action seems to come at the pace you want, like an RPG. You can hit all of the demon scrolls you want and sprint everywhere, or chill out and search for hidden treasure or roll a giant acorn up a hill.

The story is cute but antiquated- not very progressive, but that wasn't a problem for me. There's a unique segment in the middle of the story that sets this game apart from other binary good vs. evil games. (MILD SPOILER) You defeat the "final boss" and there's a big party afterwards, then the game continues. (END SPOILER) It was like an ending scene in the middle of the game. I thought this was an awesome departure from most hack/slash/shoot through the level kill the last boss then on to the next level games.

I tend to have a great time exercising a kind of OCD in finding all of the missing pieces in games like these. Somehow changing the fabric of reality with a new supernatural brush technique to solve the puzzle seems more exciting than using the new piece of gear to do the same.

I think that developers could go further in reinventing gameplay in all video games. That's why I bought a Wii rather than a PS3/Xbox 360. I was done with games trying to put a fresh coat of paint on Doom or Baldur's gate. Thematically this game is a huge step in the right direction. In terms of gameplay, Okami is/was unique and the Wii controls really let that shine. The music is great and I'm a notorious music snob. You're going to have a lot of fun with this one. I hope that the success of Okami heralds more innovation from developers. It seems that Ready At Dawn will put out a few more hot jams in 2009/near future too. After this one I'll be on the lookout.

A Breathtaking Painting for your viewing pleasure!

When I first heard from a friend about Okami on the PS2 and saw videos of it. I was so sad that I was probably never going to play it since I wasn't entirely interested in buying a system for just one game; but when I heard that it would be released for the Wii as well, I was ecstatic!
The game is truly a beauty to behold with vibrant, clear, water-colored visuals resembling that of a painting. The style lends itself well to the overall story, setting and characters that you meet over the course of the game.
The game starts off slow initially but after the mandatory 'teach players how to play' section, the game gets into full swing and I was astounded at the sheer scope of the game and how big the overall world was. I love the fact that you can go back to every past area you've been to with a new brushstroke and still find something new.
The gameplay is very reminiscent of Zelda and the developer actually mentioned being a Zelda fan as well which might have influenced the overall direction of the game. But in reality, it doesn't matter how much it borrows from Zelda. It is an extremely fun action adventure game with your typical dungeon scenarios (forest, shrine, cave, etc.) with a few unique ones mixed in.
This wouldn't be a fair review without saying something about its flaws, the play control when it comes to the Celestial brush is a bit off and takes some practice getting used to. Once mastered however, it ceases to be an issue, but its really a hurdle you shouldn't have to jump.
So, finally, this is the adventure game we've been waiting for while tapping our feet wondering when the next Zelda will come out. With over 6 major game areas to cover, hundreds of items to find, tons of logbook slots to fill in, and a myriad of sidequests and mini-games to partake in; this is not the game to be missed! If you failed to get it when it was released for the PS2, get it now on the Wii! You won't regret it!

Okami is a great game for the wii

So different from the thousands of RPG hunt-and-fight games with a beautiful hand-drawn art style. It gets a lot of play at my house along with Zelda and sports (tennis).

Very engrossing game overall

- very good, imaginative game
- actually got easier to play later in the game because of Ammy's new powers
- dialogue too long but important to story
- spent 50 hours to finish game and read the story w/o skipping
- probably minimal replay value once you finish it

Just Buy It!

Okami is one of the most unique, interesting, exciting, cultural, and revolutionary games to hit the shelves.

Graphics- Wow. Japanese art really brings this game to life in 3D. The colors are bright and vivid. There are almost no glitches and the characters look great. Throughout the whole game you will never forget that you are in Japan.

Gameplay- Hmm... where to start. It has the familiar and welcome formula as the Zelda games, but once again, the game turns it into something of it's own. You are in a huge Japanese world called Nippon and must restore the areas that are cursed by evil ( a bit like the Twilight Zones in Zeldas, except you can't go in them). This can be done by making Guardian Saplings bloom with your Celestial Brush. The brush is a powerful tool that freezes the game so you can draw stuff that help you fight enemies or do whatever you have to do. You have to play it to see what I'm talking about. With the brush you can do things such as turn day into night or the other way around, draw a bomb, create a stream, or make a gust of wind. The power of nature is in your hands! The Celestial brush has 13 handy techniques. They help you get through dungeons. The dungeons are nice because they aren't too long, yet aren't too short. In games like Zelda, the dungeons were way too long.

Sound- Beautiful Japanese music plays in the background. When you speak to other creatures, there voice sounds like Animal Crossing voices.

Plot- The plot is my favorite out of any game I've ever played. The story is based on a real Japanese legend, making it very interesting. There are many cutscenes that make you excited to go to the next area/dungeon. The plot can't be described in only a few sentences, so you can figure it out for your self. There's a cool twist at the end!

To sum it up, Okami is an outstanding game that anyone shoud at least rent. it is very similar to Zelda, so if you love Zelda you'll also fall in love with Okami. It is a perfect blend of all elements that a game should have. Parents, ignore the teen rating and just buy it for your kids. It is very educational. There is a lot of alcohol reference, but the sake they drink is just pretend. Just Buy it!

a wonderful upgrade and port from the old ps version. i love the visuals. while the use of the wiimote for the celestial brush techniques is cool, it takes a lot of practice to get it right.

I can't love it more

I have not been able to put this one down! The Wii was a perfect choice for the re-release of Okami. This game looks great and plays very well. The brush can be a bit temperamental at times but that has not been a huge thing for me.

If you want fun then go for this one!

Spectacular, fun, and original game.

I'm about half-way through this game (missed it in it's original form on ps2 as I never had one) and I'd seriously have gladly paid more than $50 for the wonder, joy, and fun I've had so far in my 25 hours of play.

This is a fantastic game with art, style, controls, ideas, and goals like nothing you've ever seen before. The artwork is incredible -- like a living, breathing Japanese watercolor scroll. The action is exciting and challenging, but at the same time "wholesome" and "family-friendly" as you restore nature to a bleak landscape while befriending and feeding wildlife. It may sound pansied-down, but it's really not -- they somehow make it simultaneously challenging, exciting, wholesome, and rewarding all at the same time. It's more "extreme" than any game I've played with "extreme" in its title!

I claim that this combination has never been achieved in any game without "Mario" in the title ever in the history of video games. I may be wrong and forgetting one or two, but there can't be many that are this awesome, and certainly no others have this incredible -- almost museum-quality -- artwork.

If you have a wii (or even a ps2) buy this game no matter what the age or interests of the potential players. Everyone can play, and will love, Okami.

very good, but not quite great

I really wanted to like this game. Having been a huge fan of Zelda Twilight Princess on the Wii, and of this genre of games in general, I had high hopes for Wii Okami. And it really does have its moments that lived up to expectations. But it simply runs out of steam towards the end. The story gets too convoluted, and the final boss is RIDICULOUS in the LAME sense of the word. I don't want to write any spoilers, but that thing was just plain dumb. In fact, Im still not really sure what it was supposed to represent. The end of the game felt rushed and forced.

Still, there's lots to love here. Lots of gameplay, and some truly unique artwork and ideas (eg the brush). Clearly, this game is inspired by Zelda, and it did get a lot of those things right. But other things were kinda dumb and unnecessary.... for example, it's always great to find chests, but it gets old when there are WAY too many of them, and they all contain kinda lame treasures. You would have to have a LOT of spare time to actually track down all of the stray beads and trinkets (incense burners, whatevers). Feeding the animals is a cool idea, but why not have some type of reward once you feed ALL of a particular type?

I guess this review might come across as more negative than I had planned because the ending was a pretty big letdown, and I just completed it. But overall, this is a very good game for this genre. So if you've already played Twilight Princess, and you're into these types of games, you should definitely give Okami a try on the Wii.

On a final note, the reviewers who claim that this game is easy are on the mark. There's too much hand-holding, and I don't recall a single boss that I didn't defeat on my first attempt. But the puzzles, the artwork, and just the creative use of the brush interactions still kept things interesting throughout.

Truly Beautiful....but

First off, don't get me wrong. The artwork in this game is absolutely breathtaking and beautiful. Original to the extreme, and for awhile I did have fun. But in the end I was more frustrated than happy with the game. The tutorial in the game takes forever to get past, I know its necessary but it's a little long-winded if you ask me. Once you finally get past that you're free to play the game and defeat a TON of demons. I do mean a lot. It can get a little repetitive, at least for me it did. And sometimes I was at a loss for what to do next. Than I found out that once I beat the what I thought was main boss the game is only about half-way over. Sorry, its too long for me. Maybe it was because I rented it and only had a week to play and it was near finals week at school but I just don't think the game was the best it could of been. I gave it three stars for the artwork and story.
