TD Le Mans is the 2nd best racer on the DC!

This is a Fabulous game that has awesome graphics and terrific replay value. Split screen racing for up to four people adds to the depth and there's harder a slip of the frame rate or loss of graphics. Just a top notch title. ...

Just got Le Mans yesterday and I was pleasently surprised . I bought it because it received a very high score from videogames.com (9.6 out of 10) which is quite unusual for a racer. I didnt have a racing game for the dreamcast so I decided to purchase Le Mans.

The best thing about this game is the AI. Car behaves the way real cars behave on the road. Graphics is awesome, replay value is 5 stars. Im still not able to outrun any cars on the track but thats the beauty of this game, its not hard and not easy, its perfect.

Test Drive LeMans is the kind of game that really makes one wish that they could quickly change careers and become a driver on a road race team! This game is, without a doubt, my favorite game to date on the Sega Dreamcast. The graphics and sound are incredible. When watching a race replay, I think to myself that if this were to be shown on television 20 years ago, someone might think they were watching a real race. I gawked in amazement as the cars went screaming by and not only could I see reflections of passing objects on the windshields of the cars, but even their brake discs were glowing red from use! It's just these little details that add to the excitement of one great game. The controls in the game are great and easy to master. But lest you think that I lavish praise uncontrollably upon this game, there is one item that I do not like. There is no way to save games between races in a Championship season. When running 3 different 15-lap races, the time involved can get to around 2 hours. That is a hefty little time investment for one game to unlock two cars. Thank goodness you can save your game during the LeMans portion of the game, otherwise I don't think anyone would race the full 24-hour race. If you want a game that will keep you coming back for more, get out there and find a copy of Test Drive LeMans today!

What is this?

When I first played this game, I thought it was great! (It still is.) Although, at first i'd pick any car just to test it out (and that took a while). But, it was like no other racing game! With all of the weather conditions and excitment, one day, I played for 5 hours! But at first I was horrible an did not know exactly what to do. But I improved, and won! I have played this game for long portions of time, but I have never played the real 24 Hour Lemans tournament on it, but I think you unlock the 2 best cars by doing that. There are probobly cheat codes for this game though. There are good graphics, cars, modes, tracks...well...basicly, this is a really good game and for you new players, don't give up... and for you experianced players, keep up the good work!!!

As good as racing gets on the DC . . .

This isn't the perfect racing game. It does have an arcadey feel at times, cars tend to bounce off you like dodgeballs, the selection of tracks leaves quite a bit to be desired, there is no rearview mirror, and considering the enormous historical range of cars that have raced Le Mans, the selection here is almost inexcusable.

That said, this is arguably as good as racing gets on the Dreamcast, and in some ways, is equal or better than what you get in GT 3. In racing games, where good graphics make for easier driving and better playability, the graphics are exceptional. The variable weather and night driving are done especially well, feels natural, and actually adds something to the experience. Minus the car collisions, the physics engine is consistent, predictable, and is comparable to that in the Gran Turismo series. Add in that you can race against no less than 24 (reasonably intelligent) computer opponents simultaneously, and can drive the actual 24 hours of Le Mans in real time (that's right, 24 actual PLAYED hours, one race, with realtime pit stops, changing weather, and night driving), and you have a definite winner.

As for the negatives . . .

1. Any decent driving game needs a rearview mirror. You need to be able to block your opponents as they drive up behind you or to just get out of their way. That's part of racing.

2. The game offers three levels of difficulty. The first offers automatic braking and easy computer competition. The second offers traction control, some braking assistance, and average computer competition. The third level offers no driver assistance and hard computer competition. Why they didn't allow you to toggle the amount of driver assistance AND the difficulty of the computer competition SEPERATELY is beyond me. It's a big enough jump from medium to hard level that it almost feels like a different game.

3. In medium difficulty level, you can bounce other cars off the road fairly easily. The other cars seem to have little or no weight. In the hard level, YOUR car will ALSO bounce off the road fairly easily. Since the computers tend to want to drive THROUGH you at times, count on ending up in the dirt on a regular basis.

4. More tracks. Le Mans, Catalunya, and Suzuka are all outstanding, historically significant tracks. Donnington, Brno, and the alternate versions of Le Mans, Catalunya, and Suzuka are all fine, but that's not nearly enough for a game with such huge aspirations. Where are Sebring, Road Atlanta, Daytona (the road racing track), Laguna Seca, and Spa?

5. More cars. Porche, arguably the most dominant marque at Le Mans, is never represented in actual name, and when they do appear, it's only as a 911. Neither is Ferrari, but that's par for most racing games. There's a heavy emphasis on late model Le Mans cars, which means Audi, BMW, Toyota, Nissan, Panoz, and then Dodge Vipers and Porche 911's in the GT class. That they included the Peugeot 905, Mercedes Sauber C9, Mercedes CLK-LM, Lancia LC2, Jaguar XJR9 LM as winnable cars shows that they knew better.

6. That crazy Le Mans race: You can't save unless you've pitted, which means at least an hour and a half between stops in the full 24 hour race. Also, you can't race the GT class cars against other GT class cars: you race against ALL competition, which means getting blown away by the prototypes and finishing well out of the running.

That said, these are smallish gripes that merely show the game is flawed. It's not perfect, but at its best, it is insanely fun. With 24 cars on the screen at a time, great physics, and realtime racing at Le Mans, there isn't much of anything like it on the Dreamcast. As a racing junkie, simply blasting down the Mulsanne Straight at 3:00 am in a Toyota GT1 and finally inching past the lead car I had been chasing for the last four hours was as close to heaven as I've ever gotten in a car game.

Never Lift!

This game is the bomb! If you love sports car racing, this is the one you've been waiting for. Suzuka in the Panoz LMP!? What's better than that?! Le Mans in the Audi! At night! In the rain! The control is excellent. Great use of sound to telegraph tire grip. Beautiful graphics. Buy this game!

i thought of giving 5 out of 5 but........................

This is the best ever game i played on any video game system.I was first of all stunned by watching the car rolling over the circuit like a real car.OK the GT1 and GT2 looked pretty good for the Playstation considering it`s 32bit caliber. But Dreamcast, although it`s a 128 bit system it could deliver the stuuf beyond it`s caliber.Yes ,i`m serious.I took the Dreamcast for the Christmas 2000.i played F1world grand prix,Speed devils on line racing,Monaco Grand prix,4 Wheel Thunder etc....racing games.F1 Grand prix was way too below the Dreamcast`s caliber, and don`t even think about buying the latter games i mentioned earlier.they are looking like 32 bit games .i`m a huge F1 fan and a crazy racing fan.TEST Drive LE mans was the perfect solution for my search for a pure simulation game, but even it was NOT PERFECT.Yes,it`s true.there`s no real damage, that was the main reason for me to give 4 stars instead of 5.if the damage were to be realthen it would be the best racing game available on the EARTH,.i`ll wait for F1 Championship Season2000 in the Playstation2 and the Need for Speed Series in it when they arrive in my country ,INDIA.till then Test Drive Le Mans is my best to mention.

This is without a doubt the most exquisite racing game! I have MSR, F355, V-Rally, Sega Rally 2, Speed Devils, and Daytona USA (Japanese import - also a 5-star) and LeMans wins hands-down! The attention to detail is just incredible - something you have to experience yourself! Don't borrow because the $5 you spend on a rental, you'll kick yourself for not having applied that toward the purchase price! If you have a DC, you MUST get this. If you don't, there's no better reason to get one! It's THAT good!
