Rainbow Six Vegas Ver. 1.5

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 1

Lets be very clear; 'Rainbow Six: Vegas 2' is a very great shooter BECAUSE of the implimented cover system and the experience points system. WIthout these two things the game would be just another boring shooter. Sure, the tactical squad based commands are very neat, but your A.I team mates are so stupid that its easier to just take on the enemies yourself.

I was never a huge fan of the original Vegas title, having only played it for about two weeks and making it through only about half of the campaign mode and a few online Terrorist Hunts. I can honestly say that Vegas 2 only marginally improves upon the original in terms of controls (Ubisoft added a 'run' button) and a slight graphical overhaul. Everything else about Vegas 2 is pretty much a mirror image of the original Vegas title.

The campaign mode is fun, if only for a little while (once you play online the campaign becomes moot), but the A.I of the enemies and your team mates is really atrocious. Your team mates will face in the opposite direction that the enemies are, they will shoot walls, and they will act like idiots. Your enemies are no better, as they will sometimes stand still while you shoot them, or they will run into your grenades. Seriously, we are in the 7th (?) generation of video gaming, you would think that developers would have nailed A.I by now. I mean, these are supposed to be ruthless terrorists, yet they act like cardboard cut-outs most of the time. I guess I'm being a little harsh, since in practically every shooter the A.I is bad.

As far as a storylines goes, I pretty much ignored it. That is to say I could care less about it because it wasn't that interesting. What more do you need other than "Go here, shoot this"? Sure, they try to incorporate Tom Clancy cliche's here and there, but for the most part I gave up trying to understand what was going on.

The notable feature is the cover system (think Gears of War or Metal Gear Solid). This seemingly minor feature really changes up the game play. Since Rainbow Six is a First Person Shooter, a cover system really helps out the gameplay. Being able to sneak around and hide behind boxes, walls and doorways is an awesome feeling. I cannot even stress how important it is for a modern shooter to have a cover system. It should be standard by this point in gaming, but alas it is not.

During the campaign you have the ability to commmand two team mates. You can have them move anywhere you want, breach a door way in a number of ways and disarm bombs. This is a fun feature, but since the A.I of your team mates is very poor and inconsistent, the implimentation of this particular aspect of game play can be pretty pointless at times.

Another cool aspect of the campaign mode is the snake camera. Similar to the snake camera in 'Splinter Cell', you see what is behind doors before entering them, further adding to the "sneaky" aspect of the game.

The campaign is somewhat short, but it does have its share of fun. Fire fights can get pretty intense, but there are no major "WTF!?" moments (think Call of Duty 4 Nuke scene). No, the real meat and potatoes of this game lies in the online portion. There are a variety of modes to choose from, you can either go at it solo in deathmatch or in Team Deathmatch. There are also different variations upon the team deathmatch (some protect the leader/kill the enemy leader game type). By now, in our 7th generation of gaming, these different types of deathmatch are all standard fare for a shooter such as this, but they are fun nevertheless. It is in the online portion of this game that I truly fell in love. I cannot describe the feeling I get when I am sneaking around the map, searching for camping enemies; the sound of gunfire and grenade explosions erupting in the distance. It is such a rush.

Another amazing aspect of Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is the experience point system. Similar to Call of Duty 4, you gain experience for every kill you make during an online match. Unlike Call of Duty 4, you also get experience for every kill you make during the campaign mode as well. You can also score points by how you kill as well. This is called the A.C.E.S system. Headshots go towards Marskman points, up close and personal deaths cout towards CQC (Close Quarters Combat), while grenade kills and breach-type kills count towards Assault points.

Graphics - not so great. I mean, they are worlds above the original Vegas title, but in comparison to games like Gears of War or Call of Duty 4 or Bioshock, the graphics just look dated. Come one Ubisoft, why are the graphics so bad?

Well, I would highly recommend Rainbow Six Vegas 2 because I think it is a very fun and highly engaging game online. The campaign is lacking a little and the graphicals are certainly not up to snuff, but there is much enjoyment to be had here.

Very Disappointed

My hot girlfriend and I loved playing the co-op portion of the first Rainbow Six Vegas. We both were very excited to hear that a sequel would be coming out. We pre-ordered the game, picked it up and started playing it the day it came out. Much to our disappointment, the game lacked the intensity and fun of the original. The first Rainbow Six Vegas had many levels at night and in very cool scenes in Vegas. The second game was almost always during the day, and the maps of the levels kinda sucked. The scenes in this one were very boring and plain. The mapping reminded me of the original Rainbow Six or Rogue Spear games from ten years ago. Many of the levels were overly repetitive and there was much backtracking through levels we had already completed. Rainbow Six Vegas was fun and kept your interest no matter how hard or frustrating it was.

The graphics are a little better, and the game play is about the same. Some little new improvements like your rank going up the further you get into the game and ordering other members to clear a room is pretty cool. Sound it good, but I heard tiny little clicks or pops from time to time. The game has its up sides; it is quite more real than the first one, but over-all, it really really lacked the fun and life that the first one achieved.

Multiplayer online is pretty cool. I died within the first 30 seconds, but still pretty neat. The non-story, co-op terrorist hunts were pretty fun and somehow the graphics looked better in terrorist hunt than in the actual game.

My biggest gripe is the game is really really short, and the ending sucks. My chick and I finished it in four days only playing a few hours a day.

All in all, I was immensely disappointed, but it had its good parts. If I could do it all over again, I would just rent it from Blockbuster and save my sixty bucks.

The most original game of the year

Uninspired graphics and useless teammates. The only good thing about this game is being able to customize your character (offline). The ranking system to unlock new weapons and armor is nice too, though I'm pretty sure it's been done before.

Right up there with Call of Duty 4

I've been playing Call of Duty 4 for a long time now and that game was downright the best game of all time on any system. I love shooters and military games and this game vegas 2 is right up there with any of them.

There are some negatives:
1. slow down when too much action is in play
2. difficulty of game is pretty challenging
3. Can't play 4 player co-op split screen like COD 4

After getting this out of the way, the game is spectacular, the graphics are very nice, the speed is just right - not a run and gun like COD 4 more realistic and the sounds are authentic. I love hearing the clicking of loading a clip or hearing the grenades explode - so realistic! Also, the looking around the corners and shooting is so fun. Unlike COD 4 you can play co-op with a friend offline and this is really the best part of the game in campaign or terrorist hunt.

Finally, I've been looking for a game that reminds me of my alltime favorite PC game Counterstrike and this is it! Just picture counterstrike with much better graphics and sounds and even more realism and that's what VEgas Six 2 is......counterstrike affectionaidos rejoice!

Cool Game, Poor Performance 3.5 Stars

I've had it since it came out; I'm playing it right now. I have upgraded Road Runner high speed, COD4 looks and runs awesome in my house. This game lags in SINGLE PLAYER MODE offline!!! The frame rate is awful and it took me forever just to find where to even PLAY online and when I found it it seems you can only play in small 2-4 player coop matches? I may be mistaken but I tried even THAT and after 5 unsuccessful attempts at joining a match I gave up. This game is okay in single player mode, I think the the graphics lack compared to COD4 (Compare the detail in the rifle you carry for example)

I borrowed my friends EYE TOY and put my actual face on my R6V2 character....very cool. However, after playing this all day and switching to COD4, it's like a fresh glass of lemonade...Makes me not want to play this game but the storyline and sequence are mildly entertaining. Personally I will play this game until I beat it or get stuck, after which point I will trade it in towards a future game....the next SOCOM perhaps? Already put down for GTA4..... :)

My friends and I enjoyed the first rainbow six vegas game, even though it had its fair share of quirks ( no 1080p support, online issues, no co-op ). In buying the second game I expected quite a bit in terms of improvement over the first, but I was definitely let down. The graphics are improved, the story mode is anti-climatic, the online play is broken and suffers from disconnects and plenty of lag. At best this game deserves to be rented, I wish that I had waited to read some reviews rather than picking this game up on release day.

Everything the first lacked (crisp graphics, ability to sprint, permeable environment, many new guns, sweet co-op options, and smarter ai; enemy and ally.) money well spent.
