No More SecuROM No More Crazy Activation. Hooray!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 20 / 69

Bioware has listened to their fans and perhaps the previous bad reviews from people who do not own this awesome game need to be deleted. Plain and simple Mass Effect is being loved by every review site.

Kotaku.com had an interview with Bioware and activation has changed so stop whining!

Q: What is the difference between the old PC disc authentication solution and the new online model?

A: Two things have changed:

* First, authentication of discs has now gone from the physical format to the online format, freeing the need for consumers to have a disc in the drive at all times.

* Second, with online authentication consumers now connect to the Internet the first time the game is launched and are required only to reconnect if they are downloading new game content.

Q: Will EA or BioWare take any personal information from my computer during an authentication?

A: Absolutely not. We do not take any personal information from your computer. The system simply verifies that a valid CD key has been provided and assigns that activation to that PC.

Q: What happens when I've reached the maximum # of computers for my game and I need more, say due to theft of computer, computer crashes, etc?

A: EA customer service is on hand to supply any additional authorizations that are warranted. This will be done on a case-by-case basis by contacting customer support.

Q: Why are BioWare and EA implementing this new authentication process?

A: This serves to protect our software from piracy. It has the added benefit of allowing consumers to activate the game on multiple machines without needing the DVD in the drive when playing the game.

Q: Did BioWare and EA change their mind on requiring that the game be re-authorized every 10 days?

A: BioWare has always listened very closely to its fans and we made this decision to ensure we are delivering the best possible experience to them. To all the fans including our many friends in the armed services and internationally who expressed concerns that they would not be able re-authenticate as often as required, EA and BioWare want you to know that your feedback is important to us.

Q: If the game isn't going to require an authentication every 10 days, will it ever require re-authentication?

A: Only if the player chooses to download new game content.

About the Game itself

Having read a bunch of negitave reviews about the copy protection system (which was I admit outragious though now, thankfully fixed), not the game, I thought I might post a review of the Game itself. I took the risk and bought and installed it after all my X-Box friends told me I had too.

So far, I am loving it. The graphics demand high end hardware but are simply put, lovely. The story is engrossing and dialogue choices and responces seem indepth and appropriate. As an RPer this makes me very happy. The facial expressions and physical gestures are very realistically done as well. Not perfect but possibly the best I have seen so far.

The runing around and leveling systems are KOTOR based, and how can you go wrong there? The Combat is third person FPS like Gears of War or The Witcher. I love the take cover and fire options. I could wish for a more dynamic control system for my squad, but aside from that, Its pretty awesome. I am still in the honeymoon stage of the game so I may update this later (i.e. I only bought it two days ago.) but imediate impressions are that Mass Effect is a great game.

Why not Five Stars then? Every once in a while it freezes and lock up. I can ctrl-alt-del out of it but then I have to re-run. I am a bit of an obsessive saver, so it's not a real problem for me, but this should not happen. hopefully this will be solved in a future patch.

Great game.

Warning: I am not going to give the game 1 star because of the copy protection, which denies the credit Bioware deserves. I hope Amazon gets rid of these pathetic reviews that are not based on the game content what-so-ever. The copy protection is not as extreme as people reviewing this are leading you to believe. It may not be as convenient as we all wish it should be but it is not a disaster, it is not destroying peoples computers, it is not making the game unplayable, etc. If you don't buy this game because of this reason, it is your loss, for you are truly missing out on a masterpiece.

Review: Got this game the day it was released on the PC. I was sad when it was released and just came out for the 360 for I was really looking forward to a sci-fi RPG. Then a few months back I realized it was coming out for the PC and was quite excited. I have played through the first few hours and I have enjoyed immensely. The writing is witty and brilliant, the characters are emotional. I am sure it only gets better as my play goes on, and the story can change many times you play it by the decisions you make. Get this, a must have for playing during some upcoming lazy summer days!

Another Bioware Masterpiece

Mass Effect is yet another Bioware masterpiece RPG. The game is well integrated and technically beautiful. It also has heart and an incredible story. the gameplay consists of a pleasant mix of an RPG and a 3rd person meeting.

a common complaint in many of these reviews is the DRM. you REQUIRE an internet connection to play so if you don't have one you should skip this. Besides this I really don't understand the other complaints concerning the DRM. so long as you have a legit, non-pirated copy it should run just fine. the game validates your CD-kay upon installation and afterward there was no other involvement.

I would recomend this game to any fan of RPGs or sci-fi games.

one of the worst games I've ever played

Games I liked for reference: the Total War series, KOTOR series, Fallout 1, Jagged Alliance, Sins of Solar Empire to name a few.

However, this POS is horrible. BORING. Spent way to much time just running around. The inventory management system is annoying. They make it difficult to give the best weapons to the best people. You have to click around every time. Also, you have no idea if a person is really effective with a given weapon. KOTOR had the great idea of allowing you to see the combat log(D&D style).
In everyway this game falls short of a real PC game. I'll be much more careful of buying anything from BioWare in the future.

Nice Game (with a Giant Asterisk)

When a game is all bad, things are easy. You uninstall it and forget it. Big deal. However, there's nothing more infuriating than a game that could have been great, that's ruined by a technical flaw, an infuriating feature or a bad design choice.

Mass Effect is such a game.

For me, the game is constantly crashing. I've not once exited the game. Every game session ends with a hard lock-up, where I need to manually power down my machine. Sometimes I play for an hour, sometimes for 3 minutes, but the game always locks up. I have a top of the line machine, purchased less than two months ago, which well exceeds the recommended requirements and is in perfect working order. The game runs very well, I get great framerate at max settings, however, the game will just randomly lock up.

And the thing that makes it even more infuriating is the cutscene / savegame design. You cannot save while in combat, and combat will often last a while. Cutscenes in the game are unskippable. And combat is often preceded by, and followed by, a cutscene. Which means that a, every time I die in a hard battle, I am forced to rewatch a cutscene; and if a game pleases to crash during battle, or worse yet, in a never ending post-battle cutscene, I have to restart from before the battle, re-fight it, and re-watch both cutscenes.

Finally, at its core, the game is rather uninspiring and offers nothing new. The vehicle driving missions are a bore, and the vehicle physics are laughable. The FPS portion is very repetitive, since the biotic powers take forever to refresh and large battles degenerate into a dumb sit-still-and-mash-the-LMB experience that's almost platformer-like. The AI is atrocious, both on the enemy and friendly squad side. Most of the fights can be won by peeking from behind a crate and firing at an oblivious enemy's elbow or heel. The cover system is abysmal. The only thing the game's got going for it is a great story and voice acting, and pleasing art direction. I am, frankly, dismayed at the universally great scores this game receives in the press. The game does draw you in, and man is it exciting to watch the story unfold, but the gameplay itself is very shallow and poorly done, and with all the technical issues on top of that... This game should have been a CGI movie.

i had the most retarded problems trying to get this game to work. I kept getting a general protection fault error when the game starts to load. a quick google search helped to fix that within a hour of dicking around. (read both vista and xp users had this problem). but once i got this game to work o man...
the graphics , story, music, characters, everything is just awesome. Im only a few hours into this game and love it. Buy this game you wont regret it.

Mass Fun with good Effects

I have a PC rig that is now over two years old and have had no problems loading or running Mass Effect. Even with my old Nvida 6800 card the graphics run well. I would not listen to the reviews about DRM or loading issues. They probably havn't played any recent EA game and do not know how to keep there system clean of memory resident programs.

The Game is very polished and quiet fun to play. You feel like you are part of a good sci-fi movie. There are a few issues with the movement and keyboard control but it was orignally designed for a controler.

If you have a PC newer then mine and have any interest in SciFi or RPGs then go get this game and have fun. Just keep track of time before you start.

Mass Effect lacked that little something

I have the Windows Vista Home Professional and Mass Effect demonstrated as being not compatible with this operating System. I attempted the installation of two different Mass Effect games. Additionally while I have not actually played this game due to this incompatibility, internet game reviews that I have read about this game indicate that at best it sucks. But don't let this review stop you from wasting your money.

Thoughts Concerning the DRM

I do not own this game, though I will attempt to acquire it shortly and will update my review accordingly. I am here to note that although this game comes with DRM security technology, there are dozens of cracked versions all ready available at numerous pirate software websites. I suggest that all of you that are complaining about the DRM feature do as I will do: buy the game, and download a back-up copy that will still work in the event that BioWare happens to go down the tube. Support the company that produces these great games and protect yourself the only way you can. Hopefully these companies will develop a better model of software security soon.
