Unfortuneately I have to agree with some of the people who feel the game is to contrived. Once you get to the higher levels of the game, there is no strategy or randomness, as in real life.
Ex. Euchre
You can get to a certain point in percentage won, then the game slaps you backward 2%, at least. I find it difficult to believe anyone would be given almost exclusively, 9's and 10's, for several games. Games, not hands, in a game.
Even the characters are yawning.

On a positive note, and the only reason I gave it three stars, it's good for learning different games on.

I must add I am generally unhappy with Sierra software. Perhaps Hoyle would consider giving it's license to someone else !

I OWN THIS CD AND I HAVE HAD ENDLESS HOURS OF FUN WITH IT. CANASTA IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES, I LOVE TO PLAY IT WITH OR WITHOUT THE CD. IT IS ESPECIALLY NICE TO BE ABLE TO PLAY THESE GAMES OFFLINE WHILE WAITING FOR A PHONE CALL!

Stacked deck

This is agreat game if you like playing against a stacked deck. Most of the reviews I've seen talk about installation and run issues, but I've played these games a lot and have gotten to the point where I can call the game before it starts.

I mostly play the Cribbage and the Gin. Play the Cribbage. Your opponent will get 3 to 4 fives for each of yours, and will get at least one or two absolutely killer cuts. He will also almost always have a hand that he can play directly into yours - if you have a nine, he always has a six. I've played Cribbage for 40 years and maybe have seen 1 or 2 24 point hands. Expect your opponent to get one per game.

The Gin is almost as bad. My advise - don't win. If you think you got garbage hands before, after you win it get even worse.

I'm terribly disappointed. If the game worked fine, I would have given it a 5 star rating. As it is, I'll give it a 1 star for the one day of use I got out of this application. I had previously had a trial version that I downloaded and so was really anticipating some enjoyable card playing when I purchased the Hoyle Card Games software. After less than a full day of use, when I tried to run the program without the CD in the CD-Drive (as was stated I could) it failed to load. Not only that but it re-started my OUTLOOK program and completely wiped it clean. I had to re-set my computer to the default of a couple of days before to regain my lost files. After scouring through the SIERRA online help, I sent a message to their tech support people. The automated response suggested that this program was not supported nor tested on WINDOWS XP. The box accompanying the software clearly states otherwise. After hearing of so many others with installation and running problems, I am hesitant to re-install even if I receive a response from SIERRA. BTW, the Sierra website lists approximately 108 pages of problems, of which at least 12 pages are for HOYLE CARD GAMES. Think Twice!

I appreciate some of the problems about sound & animation but mine were solved by un-installing and re-installing. There are quite a number of bugs, and Sierra support is non-existant. But, I've had endless hours of fun and for...thats more for my buck than 3 or 4 movie tickets.

From Pinochle to Old Maid, there's great games, and a ton of surprises. My 7 year old loves the face-maker and we always create our own faces when playing the card games. The actual card play is quick, clean and sophisticated.

There's even a list of chartacters you can play with, and the all are animated, talk, and you get to use their skill level. I find Elaine to particilulary irritating, but a great partner.

In today's world of video gasmes, it seems that younger people are addicted to the gimmicky play and whistles and balloons. Hoyle Card Games has the basic great games, plus awesome graphics, backgrounds and special effects.

Bottom Line: It's a great gift for anyone who loves top play cards or a beginner. Just go get it!
