A 40-something's take: Great alternative to the full-size

I'm not the "Guitar Hero pro" like some of these other helpful reviewers; I'd played the 'real' Guitar Hero only once, this past New Year's Eve, when a couple's teen son brought his XBox + GHero to our home and we all played during our small party. Although I wasn't that great at it, it was a lot of fun, and I was instantly hooked, and very nearly bought GH for our PS2...until I came to my senses and realized that, since my husband didn't like it (so we'd never play it together and I'd have to be in a different room/TV during our few short evening after-work hours together), I'd probably rarely play it.

This little DS version is the perfect solution; I can pick it up & pop in the headphones, and play a little while on my own, whenever.

I received it only recently so have played it only about 8 hours but it's nearly as fun as the full-size version (at least for a novice like me).

However, unlike the full-size version, it's very hard to find a comfortable position in which to hold it. It's not a simple matter of wrist position, as the little booklet advises; instead, it's the fact that the console and its buttons are straight across, while your fingers are not. So if you have it comfortably set for your first 3 fingers, your pinkie's gonna miss those blue notes, and if you adjust for your pinkie, you'll soon find your hand or wrist cramping while your other fingers struggle to feel natural. And if you try to re-adjust mid-game, you risk dislodging the game from the DS slot (thereby stopping the game), because it's not a tight "snap" fit in the GBA slot.

Still, it's fun and for a novice like me will be challenging for some time to come. (The playlist has lots of songs that I like, such as Spiderwebs by No Doubt, This Love by Maroon 5, All Star by Smashmouth, etc....although in the first run-through of the first 3 levels, I actually did better on songs with which I was totally unfamiliar -- if you read music you'll probably experience the same thing.) Like the 'real' game, you can go back and Quickplay or Practice any song you've unlocked.

This is an ingenious little take on GH; I just hope the designers can go back to the drawing board and refine the GH device so that it fits the hand more naturally (and can be flipped for 'lefties'). If they can do that, it would eliminate the problem of the device slipping from the gameslot.

AWESOMENESS!!!!!!!

I Love this game! Granted, I don't own a PS2, PS3, Wii, or anything else that plays the other versions, I've only played at a friend's house. The controls are a bit awkward by comparison but I was comfy with them in a matter of minutes. I've only had the guitar grip come out twice, so no complaints there for me either. I have an older DS and was worried about it fitting but it comes with a little adapter that was easy to install. I don't see myself ever being able to pass expert, I'm having a really tough time finishing hard! It does seem to be one of those games one can get tired of pretty easily, but them again I did play every chance I got for two weeks... I think it's a great game, but it does seem like it'll be ignored for months at a time... I wish they'd come out with some sort of expansion pack or something... or maybe just a new game cartridge with new songs but just the game card so we won't have to spend $50.00 again, I'd def. be interested in something like that...

Thank Goodness it Finally Travels!!

My 6 year old son has been a Guitar Hero junkie since it first came out. Everywhere we went he wanted to take it along even if we were going someplace that did not have a TV to plug his playstation into. When I saw Guitar Hero was coming out for the DS I was so excited I had to preorder on Amazon! He loves Guitar Hero DS and it goes everywhere with us. I could not have purchased a better gift for him to travel with!

Fun, fun, fun!

Own the Nintendo Wii Guitar Hero III and my daughter wanted the DS version so she could take it with her when we are away from home.

Love it! Very easy to use. Had some Amazon bucks to use and the item had free shipping which made it very affordable for a DS game.Guitar Hero: On Tour

I don't play video games that often. I used to be obessed when I was a kid. I probably know more about Mortal Kombat than you and everyone you know. (up to part 3) I was home and played the regular version of Guitar Hero, and didn't like it. Bought this one for a friend to play on my DS. Loved it. Played it nonstop for two weeks. Thought about it when I wasn't playing it. The same way people think about Tetris and how it would be perfect if such and such bricks fell. (am I alone on this) The game is great, song list is great. And the level of difficulty is perfect. I beat easy through hard. Got 1/4 the way through expert and said out loud. This is impossible, it's for BEEP'IN experts. But, it is still fun to pick up and take 15 minutes with.

I love how now we can play Guitar Hero on the go! It's alot like the original Guitar Hero 3 for the Wii or Playstation 2. So if you enjoy the Guitar Hero for the Wii or PS2 and you're thinking about this you should get it. The reason I gave it 4 stars was because of the price! I just thought it's alot, but I guess it's worth it.

Portable Guitar Hero

Guitar Hero on Tour is a portable game for the Nintendo DS that has its moments. Although there are only about 25 songs to play in this game a lot of people don't realize that 25 full songs is actually a lot for the small DS cartridge. They designed it wonderfully with full use of the DS's touch screen. Once you find the right hand position it doesn't hurt anywhere near as much.

Good Game, But The Little Things Take It...

I was really hesistant to buy this game, personally. A Guitar Hero on the DS seems, I don't know, out of place. I played it (rented), and I loved it! It's really good, to tell you the truth, but there are a few hangups.

the Guitar grip peripheal doesn't fit that well into the DS. It slides out at points and just kind of feels unnatural. The strumming is unresponsive and the whammy system could cause extra notes to be strummed towards the end of the sustained note. The song list does seem to lean to newer songs, but there is a lot of older songs that Guitar Hero devotees will like. I say that if you are a die hard guitar hero nut, go get this. If not, just wait untill Guitar Hero: World Tour for some new freshness.

Fun and easy to play. Good graphics and awesome songs. 4.5 or 5 stars out of 5.
