decent game, kinda

I had Lego Star Wars and loved it. I was anticipating a great game with Lego Indiana Jones. The levels are difficult, and I end up loading my computer and connecting to the internet for an online walkthrough, to find how just how to get through the level. This is after spending 30 minutes in the same room, have destroyed everything and still can't find the way out. Compared to Lego Star Wars where I only used the walkthroughs to find the super hidden stuff, I'm using it at almost every juncture in this game. It leaves me frustrated to no end, and very disappointed at the game. What's worse is that sometimes, even though I've done things correctly (again, having to go step-by-step through a walkthrough) the game doesn't recognize it, and I have to start the unending level again. Another thing, is that the levels seem to go on forever. You make it to a cut-scene thinking "Oh I finished the level!" WRONG! And there are some areas where you must have two people to manage the characters. I've had to get my 2nd wand and nunchuck out to control the 2nd character who's off doing whatever when I need them to do something. And of course just swapping characters doesn't work either b/c then the first character figures it's break time, and jumps off the platform I just spent 20 minutes trying to get him to. I spend half my time playing this game searching for how to complete the level on EVERY level, compared to on Star Wars Complete sage (36 levels), I maybe had to do that once or twice. Overall, I'm very disappointing with this product.

somewhat lacking

The Lego games are all really cute, but it lacks something. You can get stuck in a level after all the bad guys are dead, and there are no "hints" or directions to what you have to do to exit the level, and of course if you don't figure it out,and stop the game ,you must repeat the level and cannot continue until you DO figure out the last requirement in that level. Both my son and husband gave up,and haven't played it again.I noticed this is the problem in the other Lego series games as well.

Fun but buggy (would otherwise be a 5)

If you're a fan of Lego Star Wars and of Indiana Jones, this is a good game for you. It seems a bit shorter than Star Wars, but is otherwise a lot of fun with some cute surprises thrown in. HOWEVER it is buggy, seemingly really buggy given the short time I've been playing it. I've hit 4 major bugs (one locked up the Wii, the other 3 required that I quit because the required activity in the game could not be accomplished - for example a boss was out of hearts, but the game was "stuck" so that his death wouldn't complete). This is VERY frustrating and takes away a bit from the game.

Update: Make that 5 now... in Desert Ambush the tank never engaged in battle, so I couldn't go on to the next section. Again had to quit and start over.

Great Game, but I just don't really like the puzzle mode

I loved the lego re-inactments. Very amusing. But I've played SOOO many games that require you to solve puzzles (tomb-raider, prince of persia, etc.) This I just classified as one of those, albeit it was by far one of the funniest, cute, and most amusing puzzle games by far. I though 1 star would be too harsh. It's a cute game, but really boring.

It's better than a pit full of snakes... much better.

For anyone who has played the LEGO Star Wars games, you already know what to expect with LEGO Indiana Jones and you know already whether or not you like the game. It's more of the same with a different theme, which is good as far as I'm concerned. The big difference is there is more platforming and puzzle solving and slightly less combat. The difficulty level has also been ratcheted up a notch or two, which I also see as a good thing.

For everyone else who hasn't played the previous LEGO adventure games, here's the scoop. The game has three adventures based off of each of the original three Indiana Jones films. Except everything is made with LEGOs instead. Each adventure has six levels. Gameplay primarily consists of platforming and puzzle solving with a fair mix of beat-up-style combat to spice things up. The game supports one or two players who can play in co-op mode at any time. All that needs to happen is a second player picks up the controller and jumps into the action. Players have an infinite number of lives, so it's pretty easy to slog through the game even if you aren't that good at it. That isn't to say that the game isn't challenging because there are some tough puzzles and jumps gamers are expected to make, but you'll eventually get through everything without seeing a GAME OVER message because you can keep trying over and over until you succeed. This makes it a perfect family game where younger children can play alongside an adult without experiencing much frustration. In one-player mode, the computer takes control of the other character, which the player can switch to at any time.

The Good:
* Intuitive gameplay. Pretty much anybody can pick the controls up and adventure like a pro within minutes.
* Drop-in Co-op Gameplay
* Lots of unlockables. The replay value is very high with over 60 unlockable characters and nifty features and modes to unlock.
* Clever and entertaining cut scenes that parallel the movies. Fans of the movies will likely enjoy the humor and the character's personalities have been portrayed very well.

The Bad:
* It's a fairly short story (8-10 hours to complete) if you don't care about unlockable content. Gameplay extends much longer if you try to unlock all the hidden content.
* Enemies frequently have projectiles and you're left with your fists. Expect to get shot when you bring a whip to gunfight.
* The water effects on the Wii version are downright bland for no good reason because the rest of the graphics in the game are pretty solid. The Wii hardware is capable of producing better looking water effects and it's been done before. A minor complaint, but still valid.
* Multi-player camera control is kind of wonky and it's easy to die in some areas because the camera will favor one player over the other. But you since everyone has infinite lives so it isn't much of a problem.

Overall, I highly recommend LEGO Indiana Jones. It's a good family game, fans of the movies should like it, and it's a must-have title if you have enjoyed the other LEGO adventure games. If you have an XBox 360 or a PS3 in your home, you may want to consider buying it for one of those other consoles for the better graphics. Otherwise the gameplay on each of the consoles feels pretty much identical based off my experience with the first few levels.

Not As much fun as Star Wars

A few years ago, a surprisingly great game called LEGO Star Wars was released. Now Lucas Arts has given us the gift of LEGO Indiana Jones (LIJ). Is it as good as the previous LEGO entries?

No. Don't get me wrong, I love this game, but it's not as good as LEGO Star Wars. First of all, I really don't think Indiana Jones was the greatest choice for a LEGO game. One of the many great features of the first game was that all of the characters were cool and fun to play as, but in LIJ, the only character I wanted to play as was Indy. The other characters didn't have cool moves like him. There just aren't enough characters in the films for a videogame. Also, all of the good scenes of the movies are the worst to play, mostly because the vehicle scenes were poorly constructed. The boulder chase was done horribly! Along with LEGO Star Wars, this game is much too short. I also wish they included the fourth movie. When I go home after seeing Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (which by the way was great), I want to play the game for it, not just the first three!! Adding that movie would include many more characters, which is needed.

On a positive note, LIJ does a great job of following the movies. It still has the fun LEGO gameplay, but brings some new things like riding in vehicles. Now you can find and use items in the levels like shovels (to dig up treasure.$$!), wrenches (to fix broken machines), guns, and books (to translate ancient writing). The levels are fun and exciting, and the graphics look great. The worlds are very detailed and remind me a lot of Indiana Jones, my favorie action/adventure movie series. The controls are tight. If you don't like the motion controls, button controls are an alternate option, which is awesome. The levels are much harder and longer than LEGO Star Wars, but getting a True Adventurer in each level is easier, so it balances out well. True Adeventurer requires you to collect LEGO bolts, which can be found by smahing things or going on ledges and such. Smashing stuff is really fun. The gameplay is you run through levels based on the first three IJ movies and you have to get to the end by jumping on platforms, fighting enemies, solving a few puzzles, and a few more things depending on the level. Once you complete it, you get to see a hilarious cutscene which unwraps another piece of the plot, which follows the movies extremely well. I thought the jumping was done very poorly, because the camera isn't always there. One other complaint that I have is that most of your enemies have a gun, and many times you die because some of the characters are limited to close range only. There is no way to block bullets coming at you. However, being able to collect weapons they drop and using anything you can find as a weapon helps this problem a little bit. Another great feature in this game is that you can watch cutscenes over and over again in Barnett College (The college is similar to Dexter's Diner). The music is great and is taken right from the movies. The drop in/drop out co-op mode is very fun and cool. The controls and gameplay are so simple that any one can start playing. The backrounds look good graphic wise, but the LEGO characters don't. Some glitches made me have to start the level over again. On that note, the Xbox 360 version is probably more worth the money. Any IJ fan will LOVE this game and should buy it, while it is worth a rental for others who are interested. Two thumbs up from the Ultimate Gamer!

Has a few things wrong.

OK, I agree - the camera angles and stuff are bad at times.

But, My 5 yr old loves it. We have the Star Wars Lego game and this one might not be as good as it.....but we still like it. Have had a good time as a family doing the "treasure hunts" (as my son calls them). We have learn to work well as a family with it when playing in 2 player mode.

I will be ready for Batman when it comes out!

Make Sure you have the guidebook!

This game is a blast to play. Very addicting and funny. At first I played it till I got stuck on a level. I went out and bought the guidebook (Prima guide I think its called)and its a good thing I did. Theres a couple times where it seems like you have no idea what to do and the guidebook comes in real handy. Makes the game alot more fun to play

GREAT game - may be hard for newbies though

I am NOT a gamer - or, haven't been since I was in high school (which was over 20 years ago). For years I hesitated bringing a video game console into my house because I knew I'd get very absorbed. However, the Wii was too good to pass up. Since I don't consider myself a gamer AT ALL, my review is from the perspective of a video game novice.

I love the game. Plain and simple. But it did take me a long time to get the "point" of it. I was stuck on that very first scene of ROTLA for a LONG time because I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing outside of collecting coins and occasionally digging something out of the ground. In the end, I opted to go online. I went to the most popular video website on the planet and saw a movie of the entire first video game scene. And that's when the lightbulb went on.

From there I became obsessed. Yes, I stayed up late many nights in a row, my fingers clicking like crazy while my family slept all snug in their beds. And yes, one worknight I even played until 5 a.m. and STILL made it to work at 9:30 a.m. (I was very tired that day, though).

The things I like most about the game:
1) Your characters don't die - that's key for a novice like me who takes a long time to get going. If my character kept dying and forcing me to start from scratch I'd HATE this game.
2) There are two ways to play the games. Besides story play wherein you are assigned characters, I much prefer freeplay when I can tear loose with up to eight different characters with different skills. You can do a lot more that way.
3) The secret surprises. I love that they have hidden six Star Wars characters in the game (I've found four of them thus far).
4) You can play this one a long time before you "beat" it. When I first began saving my game, I presumed that ROTLA was Game 1, TOD was Game 2, and LC was Game 3. Not so! I've gone through all three movies a couple times and STILL have only done about 73% of GAME ONE. There are two other games to go after this one! That's awesome and I can't wait to unlock Game 2 (I know how to unlock it - I just need to get to the point where I have all the pieces in place to unlock it).

My almost-4yo son plays the game with me sometimes. He gets frustrated because he can't hold both the remote and nunchuk in his little hands. So he almost always has tears and tantrums when he plays because he can't get his character to do what he wants. But he still loves it and every night he asks if we can play "for a few minutes." Yes, the game seems violent (what with the hand-to-hand combat and guns and such), but it is seriously downplayed because it's all LEGOS. When someone "dies" in the game, they just break up into little lego pieces and then reform again. There's no real carnage like other more mature games out there.

All in all I heartily recommend this game to anyone, but be aware that there WILL be a learning curve if you've never played this type of game before. I highly recommend you visit the most popular video website on the planet and watch the first ROTLA scene clip so you can get an idea of how to play the game. You'll never look back and you'll love every minute of it!

fun!

This game is a lot of fun. If you liked Lego Star Wars you will like this game as well. I did find a few bugs in it though.. a few times I had to start a level over in order to finish it. Also, it is very annoying that you can't skip any of the animations.. and before you can start any level, you have to watch that screen with the red line moving around on the map. No way to skip that. I still like the game, in spite of those annoyances.
