A truly great storyline

"Wild Arms" probably has one of the better story lines that I have seen in console RPGs. At the beginning, you play the three different characters separately; this basically let's you get used to the strengths and weaknesses of each character. Shortly after this, all three meet up, and they pretty much stay together for the rest of the game. Not only are the characters interesting people, but the plot is very well done and executed (though it is one of those save the world plots). Combat in the game was pretty fun (or at least I thought so), though I can see where some people might not like it as there really isn't a whole lot of strategy to it. Some of the puzzles in "Wild Arms" can be a little challenging, but most of them are not too hard to figure out. The game has one thing that some people might consider a downside (I didn't); pretty much everything in the game was polygonal making the graphics a bit dated for the time. One thing I almost forgot to mention is the game introduction: when you first start up the game, you are treated to an anime style production that introduces you to all the characters. This game is a lot of fun to play and well worth spending the money for it.

Long, fun, and great music. What else is needed?

Wild Arms was the second American Playstation rpg. The graphics attest to this--they're pretty ugly. The battle system is nothing special, though at the time (with its guardian force system and ARMs) was quite unique.

However, it is an extremely good time. Truly, the characters will become your friends. They are very well developed, each with distinct personalities and drive. This development isn't without a good complementary story, Wild Arms (though cliched, what isn't?) presents a very pleasant story.

The mysterious quality about all of the hidden goodies littered throughout the world (an unreachable ledge here, an edge-of-the-screen-seen cave there) adds to the already impressive atmosphere generated by the music.

The music is INCREDIBLE. You'll never forget that classic dungeon theme, or Adlehyde town and castle, or perhaps Port Timney. . . I could go on for a while. Some unforgettable stuff. You'd recognize it years later.

This is a very addictive game if you can get past its dated look. A solid buy, I'd say.

And So the RPG Fanaticism began. . .

It was a long time ago that Wild Arms entered the gaming world as the second RPG on the PS (the first being Beyond the Beyond in '95), but a long time doesn't really change anything, for I have yet to see an RPG that has surpassed the quality that was shown here. Sure the graphics are good ol' 2-D, but if you're one of those shallow people who can't get by the look of the game, then stop reading . . . NOW! I don't want you reading this. Cause this game is for the people who love the characters they play as; people who feel for them and care for them as they pass through the different stages of the game. I have always said that playing an RPG is like reading a fantasy/sci-fi novel, so anyone who differs in opinion can laugh or mock all they want, but this is for the TRUE gamer.
This game offers so much that I can barely describe it. The music is absolutely amazing, the characters are even better, and the plot, well, that is the best! So what if it's the typical save the world type plot! If you consider yourself a RPGer, or a gamer, get this immediately, you will not regret it.

Great game...

Back in 1997, almost all gamers were talking about the debut of Squaresoft's Final Fantasy VII for the PSX. I, never having played an RPG before that point, played a demo of the FFVII at my cousins house (that was packaged with Square's Tobal No.1 - little known fighting game). That christmas I asked Santa for a Playstation and a copy of FFVII. Sanata delievered and I enjoyed and occupied myself for many hours that christmas...

But this review is about Wild Arms. After I had completed FFVII after the holidays, my classmate lent me his copy of Wild Arms. While Wild ARMS didn't contain all the hype and flash that FFVII had going for it (far from it in some aspects), I felt the game overall was a real winner.

Even five years after it's release I still can't praise this game enough. Graphically the game is very out-of-date by today's standards, but one must realize the game's graphics were out-of-date the minute FFVII flexed it's polygonal mucsles only a few months later. If your rating how good an RPG is by it's graphics, then you are not a true RPG fan in any way, shape, or form.

Graphics was never the series' strong point, even though the graphics for Wild ARMS 2 were very well done (outside of the battle system mind you!), and Wild ARMS 3 cell-shading was nice (but kinda dull overall).

What really made Wild ARMS such a strong game is the excellent character development that easily rivals ANY square-enix title (I'm not afraid to make such a bold statement!). When you really start to feel for the game's characters, espeically when tradegy strikes them, you know you have a winner. Even the game's villians are very well developed and very, very memorable (I still refer to them in gaming conversations after all this time). Some may say the story is your typical save-the-world fare, but I still think it beats the heck out of some of the plotlines in games today (where original ideas seem to be lacking overall).

Wild ARMS, simply put, is a classic. Personally, I would put this above FFVII in terms of my overall favorites, even though I played FFVII first (FFVII still being another one of my top favorites). Even if your a new to Wild ARMS, or a fan, this is one RPG not to overlook.

Hmmm... I wonder what the PSX2 remake, Wild ARMS: Alter Code F is going to be like?

This game is terrific! You must play it!

I love this game! You must have a memory card to play it.I speak from experience! There is forty something hours of gameplay. The intro is great and so is the animation. It's a one player game but two people can play it.I've beaten it several times and never tire of it.Here's the basic summery. You have three characters. You choose who to play first. The characters are: a princess/sorceress,a treasure hunter and an outcast. All of the charaters are very well drawn up.At first you play out all their scenarios. It takes a little over an hour but, then you soon find out that's only the introduction! After that the characters stay teamed up and face many optional and nonoptional quests. You sail around the land called Filgaia in a ship, travel in the Earth Golem and fly in the Protowing. You figure out secrets from each characters past. You journey to far off regions to find all twenty-two mythical guardians of Filgaia. The evil metal demons are endangering the world that is why you must free all the guardians only then can you win.

I can't say enough good things about this game.

It has a catchy western theme without making the characters seem like cowboys, character development is good, graphics are nice, the scenes and settings are aestheticly pleasing. The combat mechanics are fun with plenty of options without being too complicated or too simplistic.

More people would surely know about this game, and own it, had it not been released around the same time as Final Fantasy VII, which we all know most of the gaming community purchased and played for quite a long time.

Wild ARMs is a great, great game, and since it's years after its release, you can usually find it used or reduced at a nice price. It's a game I would have easily paid $50 for, it's been lots of good fun for me.

The most underrated RPG on the PlayStation

Many people concider "Final Fantasy 7" as the first great RPg on the PlayStation, but I beg to differ. A few months before it's release, there were virtually no RPG's that were even decent, much less great, and out of the blue, the game "Wild Arms" is released, and it blew me away. I had read a good review and I bought it from a friend for $10, and I do think it was one of the best deals I've ever got.

The game was, at the time, a small blend of the best RPG's of the 16-bit era, stirred into a 32-bit pot. While the graphics aren't eye-popping nowadays, they're still pretty much tolerable. The game's battle system, while it doesn't seem really unique, is different from most other RPG's, especally the force system, where with most other RPG's (The Final Fantasy games for example) the more damage you take, you get to preform stronger attack. But the force system takes in the damage you take, and damage you do, and you can preform more than one special attack. Not ground breaking, but a welcome change from other games.

The story is also very strong, spawning from a fictional legend in the game, and elvolving into something more with every boss you beat. "Wild Arms" is a game that is a steal at any price you buy it at, and is the true first great PS RPG.

My first RPG ....*sigh*....

Back around playstation's release there were only 4 real RPGs. Beyond the Beyond, Suikoden, Vandal Hearts and Persona. I had just graduated from an NES to a playstation (I know) and was in the mood for a game with a story, i spent most of my time playing jumping flash...quality...true quality. Wild ARMS was the first RPG to catch my eye. It has a great story, revolving around the war with demons and an ancient past, good graphics, and a very cool/ very subtle western theme. The opening was my favorite and yours, music accompanied by ANIME!!. Great job whoever did it!! (I still love that song). Battle was simple and strait forward, the crest graph magic system and ARMS make the characters more unique and interesting. The worst part to the game was the sequel, a disappointment sadly. It is a great game and all true RPGers should have at least played it.

This is definitly the best game next to final fantasy. The music is not annoying, the characters are memorable, it has an excellent story, the graphics, even though they are 2D, are great. I absoloutly love this game!
