3D Freedom (and works in Win XP)

This is a unique game in its kind. It is much more fun than shooting space ships in the open space and than being attached to the ground with a human-like being.

When I got the game -the version sold here- I was a little worried to find out it wouldn't work in XP. And the first time I run it, it didn't. After that I closed a couple of applications that I had running on background (including antivirus) and installed the Patch 1.4 (D3_1.4_NOCD_Patch.exe. [...]

It definitively requires a joystick. I've tried to play with a mouse (or the little pseudo-joystick that acts like a mouse in a laptop) but it is frustrating the little control you have over the ship (even when you can move the ship it is though to aim). So, with a joystick it feels like is heaven. :)

I remember that when I first played Descent (being a teenager), I was amazed by it. So, this new version that preserves all the concepts from the first one and it is improved in graphic quality (and other aspects, like new robots, the probe, etc) has burst my desire to sit in the cockpit and unravel the PTMC mines!

Update...

Multiplayer or Single player, it's a matter of taste... Either way, Descent still lives! (personaly I like both) PXO is no more, but people still play online every day.

Descent 3: Retribution consists of 15 huge levels... 7 in Mecenary. (Plus multiplayer maps) The levels are a work of art and the music is awsome. This game is absolutly the greatest of it's time (1999) and is still a great game today. New missions and mods are still being made today, and best of all they are free! At this price you can't go wrong. Get demos, patches and info at Planet Descent.

Hello! Multiplayer Anyone?

I've been reading these reviews of Descent 3 and I'm shocked that most of the posts have been about the singleplayer.

If you're looking for a singleplayer game, look somewhere else. The Descent 3 singleplayer is boring. I never even finished the singleplayer of my favorite game of all time.

Multiplayer is what Descent 3 is all about. Forget Counterstrike. Forget Quake and Unreal. This game requires more skill than those games have in their pinky fingers.

If you're looking for an easy multiplayer game, Descent 3 is not for you. On your first day you may die 50 times in a row at the hands of more experienced pilots. But is it worth it? Most definitely. It's one of the few things that still gives me an adreniline rush. I almost fell asleep snowboarding the other day. I guess that's what D3 does to you.

I have some friends who prefer to watch me play rather than try to learn it themselves. For me, it's fun to play and fun to watch. I still play D3 every chance I get and no game will ever take it's place. I playe warcraft 3 on the side, but Descent 3 will always be my main squeeze (videogamewise.)

Plenty of people play online on PXO. Hop in some time. You'll meet some cool people who are always willing to help newbies... and umm make inappropriate jokes. ;)

Excellent value; excellent game.

A candidate for GAME OF THE YEAR OF 1999, Descent 3 is, by far, the best of the trilogy and three years later, still remains one of the best-looking and best-playing computer games that I've ever come across.

Like the previous two prequels, in Descent 3 one flies a quasi-diminutive robotic ship through neon-lit tunnels, destroying enemy robots, collecting powerups and advancing from level to level in order to complete ones' mission. One major advantage that this latest installment of the trilogy has over the previous two is that -as opposed to being COMPLETELY limited to the inside of tunnels- in Descent 3 one can access tunnel exits and fly OUTSIDE.

Like other stellar Interplay titles, Descent 3's menu, alone, belongs in the hall of fame: Setup is extremely user-friendly and there are so many options that it's not even funny. D3's graphics are excellent, the sounds are superb, the weapons are evenly balanced, as is the gameplay -not too fast and not too slow- and the missions are very challenging, but not impossible.

Although Descent 3 may not be for everyone (I, personally loathe Role-Playing-Games and related genres) if you might be or are interested in first-person combat flight simulators replete with technologically-advanced science fiction elements, then you can't go wrong with purchasing Interplay's 9 dollar Descent 3/Mercenary expansion title. At a mere nine dollars, it's practically too good to be true; it's like winning the lottery or a sweepstakes.

Pretty Good, but not everyone's type of game

I bought Descent 3 several Months ago. It has some good cutscenes, and a plot that's more than an excuse to frag. I enjoyed what I have played so far, but when you get stuck, (and you will), the game suddenly loses its interest. You need to be a good gamer to fully appreaciate this game, or at least willing to put some serious time and effort in. I like the expansion pack a little better than the normal game, both in graphics and action. I'm not a real fan of the Descent series, but if you were madley in love with at least one of them, this is your kind of game. Be sure to have a good crisp joystick, good speakers, and lots of time!

The Best Game ever!!!

Descent 3 is by far the coolest game I've played. It has awesome action, good plot, and a surprising lack of nudity or violence. Actually, I don't know why it's even rated Teen. But you have to get it!!! The single-player rocks, and the multiplayer just blows you away!! I'm saving up money to but it, so if anyone wants to buy it for me, write an article with your address and an obvious title.

I never played, or are playing, this game just looking at the box seems like the best game I have ever looked at through a window. I would like to play this game but have no money. If you would like to but this game for me just leave another review titled "5 star gaming" and your E-mail address.

I have played Descent 3 since the demo first made it to PC Gamer Magazine. I bought the bundle because I wanted to set it up on my home network to play co-op games. I love the feel of the game. It has a story that plays along well as you go. It adds new weapons and enemies as you progress through the game. The enemy AI can attack from any direction and a heated battle in a room full of bots is really cool! My 6 year old daughter loves to play co-op with me and gets it fairly well. It is not gory and you only attack robots. This is still one of my favorite games even after playing through the single player missions several times. Minimum requirements should be 64MB SDRAM and a good processor of 400 or above though I play it on my K6-2 350 machine. 16MB video is a must. The graphics are demanding but very nice. This is not the newest game with all the eye candy, but it sure isn't Pong. You will love this one.

Amazon.com RULES! I always find excellent deals here, including the bundled jewel case set! That also explains why I've bought so much here and keep coming back.

Wow! Even better than the original

After playing the first Descent for a number of years, I decided to upgrade. Unbelievable! The graphics are awesome, the sounds fantastic and incredible enemies! I can't wait for a Descent 4! It just keeps getting better & better!
