Loved it...when i could play it

I used to play this all the time when i was young and it was honestly one of my absolute favorite games. I was able to play it on my XP OS in 2003 (changed the color settings and it was fine) but uninstalled the program. I tried to install it again fairly recently and now it won't work. It's a shame really. I wish they'd make an updated version that works with XP as this is a great learning tool for kids. I was barely finishing grade school when I got this game and it really strengthened my knowledge of Geography.

4 stars...for when it works! The game takes you all over the world searching for Carmen and/or one of her sly partners. The game helps improve critical thinking and problem solving kills while giving kids a great introduction to geography, history, and culture.

Before Broderbund software pops the question- ' Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?', what arises in one's head is ' Who in the World is Carmen Sandiego?'Cloaked in red, hat askew on her auburn cascade of hair, a malicious grin playing on her lipstick soaked lips, is the World's Queen of Crime- Carmen Sandiego. And as an Acme agent, it's your mission to snare the peripatetic pilferer and land her in the clink.
But that's no easy job- as Carmen, with a truckload of thirty- nine cohorts is out to steal everything in the world worth treasuring. Her notorious network has fifty nations in its clutches, and only the cleverest and most cunning agents the world has to offer can dare to ever match up their wits with her. Now the fun begins.
Carmen sends out one sidekick and he robs a country of an extremely prized monument, possession or landmark. Your Acme Chief then transports you to the scene of the crime, where the crook has vanished from. To catch onto the trail, you interrogate the local public on what the crook looked like, and where he was probably headed next. The colourful folk of the world answer your questions with indirect answers that act as clues to a certain nation. Also, their descriptions help you put together a picture of Carmen's crony. Thus, grabbing flights from country to nation with the click of a mouse, you hunt down the hot trail of the crook, knocking on the door of the beauty, sights and sounds and cultures of the globe while you're at it. Chat with the Chinese with the Great Wall of China and oriental music flowing in the background. Swoop down from the snows of Iceland to the desert sands of Egypt. All just sitting on your computer chair.
And finally, a place comes where the crook is roaming around and trying to mingle with the crowd, you look up the physical profile you've gathered, and gotcha! An arrest- and you've cracked the case. After another thirty-eight challenging and entertaining cases that take you across the savannahs, up Mayan pyramids and in front of the Taj Mahal, one is up against the ultimate chalenge- Carmen Sandiego herself. And certain clues from confessions prove she has a deadly secret up her red sleeve...
Packed with GK, facts, foot-tapping music, breathtaking scenery and the people and faces of the Earth, what Carmen Sandiego has to offer is what the world has to offer. Educational and yet a roller- coaster ride of mystery, deduction and adventure, this is on game that you can't miss. What many have spent their lives tring to achieve- you can do it with the tapping of a keyboard in your own home. So yank this of the shelves and get yanked into the infinite horizons within your screen. To discover the wonder that we call Earth. To feel the exhilirating surge of excitement as you toss wold- class thieves behind bars. And now if you haven't had enough- Carmen has a competitor for world searches- you, for worldwide fools!

"On account of there ain't no zeros, I give you a one."

I hope the software technogeeks had a good time designing this monster, because neither I nor my grandchildren (ages 8 and 12) had any fun trying to make it go. It is not very interactive: one has to spend a lot of time listening to the characters recite their lines with no ability for the user to click out. And the subject matter the characters talk about is often rather uninteresting as well.

The real killer, though, is that the clues for catching the criminals are so sketchy that we could not follow them. The software developers were so absorbed with their technical abilities to make a slick and cool format for this latest edition they forgot this is a children's program. They took a great educational game that kids really enjoyed and destroyed it.

I wish I had not spent my money on this software.

First uninstall the game (if it's installed) then proceed.

- Click Start
- Click My Computer
- Right-click on your CD drive icon
- Click Search
- Type *.exe
- Press Enter then wait for the search to complete

About 18 files should have been found.
For each of those files, perform the following six steps:

1. Right click on the file
2. Click Properties
3. Click on the Compatibility tab
4. Check the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
5. Choose Windows 95 from the drop-down list
6. Click OK

(Yes, you need to repeat those six steps for every file.)

That's it.
Now the game should install and work fine.
Be sure to install QuickTime when asked to during the installation process.

NOTE:

While playing the game, the video clips are likely to be of lower quality than they would be on an actual Windows 95 computer.

This is because your display is automatically switched to 256-color mode when the game starts, and Windows XP won't allow the video clips to play using 16-bit color while the game is running in 256-color mode.
Windows 95, however, does allow this.

If you discover a way to force XP to show the clips in 16-bit color, please post instructions.

My son and I played this together. He is only six and was able to follow along and when he needed help I was there. It was great to learn about geography without it being a text book. He really enjoyed and didn't want the game to end.

i guess i didn't realize that carmen san diego software is somewhat old and newer systems have much updated fancier versions of quicktime, that will not run carmen. making this cd completely non usable.!!!

i have recently bought a mac, but know that this will also probably not work since mac also has very updated version of quicktime, also resolution has to be dummied down to only 256 colors, it is non operable in millions of colors that all new pc and mac systems have.

the main point: make sure older game software is compatible.

also thank goodness i did not spend much.
