Chibi rockin robo!

I loved this game, the feeling of running around a common family house and helping the family was great. This is one of those excellent video games that actually creates an experience- once you are immersed in an experience and find yourself forgetting its a video game that's a good sign of success.

I love the idea of making choices which could affect the lives of the family. Although in this gamecube installment the story follows a general set script, I would love to see more choices in upcoming Chibi games, wherein I could give the receipt to mom that would reveal dad's overspending, or I could not give it to her and something else would happen, dad wouldn't get kicked out of the bedroom for one. It's having choices in games that really works, and allowing us to follow out the different story threads based on our choices is what games should be doing. Let's hope they deepen the Chibi experience by opening up more choices in dealing with the family.

No doubt this is a zen game, one wherein you feel so good playing it, as you are mostly helping the family somehow. It's a great alternative to shooting and whacking. Also I imagine we'll all have Chibi robo's in our houses soon.

Great game for patient adults

Chibi Robo is very cute, but that doesn't mean it's a children's game. It starts slowly and can be repetitive towards the end. You do have to watch cut-scenes and you may be trapped watching the same cut scene again if you talk to characters more than they have things to say. Your mission is to basically clean house and make the family happy, a premise that sounds like it could be a turn-off. In my experience it isn't, as when I played it in my house two of my non-gaming housemates (ladies) got hooked, too. Playing Chibi Robo is a nice, relaxing time. The story gets a little dramatic at times and there's a quite affecting scene around the middle of the game. All of the characters have distinct personalities and ambitions. The best part of the game is seeing how the relationships between the characters play out, in often disturbing and hilarious ways. You can tell that a lot of care went into Chibi Robo. The sound effects are particularly pleasant. I found myself enjoying scrubbing the floor with a toothbrush just to hear that beautiful music. The controls are good but it took me way too long to stop picking up my cord by accident. Flying can be a little frustrating at first, especially when you're trying to estimate distances. The house is very naturally constructed, so sometimes you aren't sure if you have found a cool shortcut or if the game tricked you into thinking you have. The puzzles are fun and esoteric in a good way. It is a little overwhelming to try and work out clues around the house while your energy and daytime/nighttime run out, but it makes everything seem more urgent. The day/night transition is artificial but well done. Maybe some day we'll have a Chibi Robo game with a constant day/night loop but not this generation. My housemates started playing after I did but we still discovered different parts of the house at different times. The world of the house is quite detailed, down to a 2D world beneath the sink drain and up to a planter hanging from the ceiling. There are a lot of activities and side games to play, and I would say I spent about 25 hours playing. There were some tiny loose ends that I didn't finish even after beating the game. I haven't really played it since then (though I just picked up the Nintendo DS version of Chibi Robo, Park Patrol), but that doesn't stop me from recommending it. Chibi Robo is a grand adventure, it is well worth the bargain basement prices that GameCube games are going for, and one time through is greatly satisfying. Lend it to a friend when you're done. After all, Chibi Robo is about making people happy.

Great game. Wish it was a bit more open-ended...

This game is incredibly fun and creative. Unfortunately, it's not as open-ended as I would have liked it to be. There are definite steps you have to take in order to unlock certain things and move the story forward (which, unfortunately, only progresses along the one path).

Once you finish the game, it lets you continue, but since you've already achieved most, if not all of your goals, it's mostly about seeing how much money you can collect. This would be fun and interesting if the game designers would have incorporated a plot line involving you, as Chibi Robo, being able to help the family with their debt or something. Unforunately, that's not the case.

Overall, this game is great, the graphics and story are fun, and the puzzles are adequately challenging. People looking for a nice, quirky game will enjoy Chibi Robo.

Charming.

Chibi Robo is a very cute little puzzle/adventure game. It isn't exciting to play, but it is very engaging and charming. I found it to be a lot of fun. The gameplay is built around a series of mini-missions that require you to get your four-inch-tall robot up on high places, gather items, and explore. You acquire upgrades as the game progresses. The game has an overall goal, too. There is a plot of sorts, that moves forward with the game, too. If you are easily amused by quirky characters and whimisical puzzle play, this game is for you

It's just not good...

I bought this game based on the reviews written here. Trust me, it's not a good game. I'd say the age group it targets is a window of 7-8 years old, because they have to be old enough to read well, but young enough to think this cutesy game is worth playing.

A pet peeve of mine is a game that stops the action and makes you read something. Even Mario Sunshine was guilty of this. A better example is Metroid Prime, where reading is not mandatory. Chibi Robo tries to be a story game or something. It sure isn't an RPG (it's a puzzle game if anything). And characters have these long, drawn-out conversations. My son was playing this and I heard him yelling "This is boring! They just keep talking!". To make it worse, sometimes the text flies by so fast you can't read it - important stuff too! (The only reason I gave this 2 stars overall is because my son played it for more than one day).

Being an old-school gamer, I'm not a graphics hater. But in a game where you walk around a real-life house, the graphics should be above average at least. It would help submerge you in the game. The don't even use shadows. And the characters kind of flail around like fish.

The music is just a notch above toothache-bad. It sounds like the junk I used to peck out of my 1986 Macintosh Midi.

The game play is non-existent. You walk around and pick stuff up. Other than a bit of "how do I get up there?" there's no skill required.

I was hoping for something that was a cross between Mario and Pikmin. It's not.

I recently saw this game on a demo at a Wal-Mart and was told that the store at the time only had the demo disc, but did not actually have the game available for sale. I was entranced with the concept of a game which required the user to operate a robot to basically clean up around a fictitious home, interacting with the family, completing various tasks etc. How much fun could that be right? This game is just as challenging and enjoyable for me, a 37 year old adult as it is for my 13 & 9 year old boy and girl respectively. Intriguing action as well as a unique storyline keeps the player interested to find out what else they can accomplish with this little 4-1/2" robot. This game does not have any violence and yet does not come across as a childish game. I personally have not completed the game yet, but I am still interested in doing so.

Not what I expected based on reviews

I bought this game for a variety of ages (7-14). Other than my 7 year old saying that "it's cute", there really isn't much here for most kids (or adults). The graphics are pretty lame and the sound effects are worse (the characters speak a unique language so kids would have to be readers to understand the game).

Bottom line, if you're trying to program your kids to be anal retentive cleaners, maybe this a is a good programming device. Otherwise, I say... stay away.

My nieces, nephews and oldest daughter are thinking I'm pretty lame for buying this game.

Good luck getting "Happy Points" & "Mullah".

Seriously though, this is one of the best games released towards the end of the GC's lifespan. I can't really explain why I liked it so much. You are a cute little (some may say Chibi) robot and you are primarily cleaning up after and solving the problems of your owners. There is a fairly large house to explore and finding items you can use is half the fun.
Even after I got the items and helped the characters through their issues, I still continued playing.
This is a simplistic game that is probably aimed at a much younger audience, but I still enjoyed Chibi's adorable little adventure.
