I want to make it perfectly clear...

...what I do not intend to do in this review before I carry on with what I do wish to accomplish with it. To start, almost every day, Square Enix outreaches itself in setting new records for arrogance, deceit, and greed. It's really breathtaking to watch it. Square Enix claims that merit is adequately measured by its methods and qualifications. This is a very irritating and unconstructive view and moreover, is wrong in many ways. Square Enix doesn't have any principles, or if it does, it puts them aside whenever they're inconvenient. Okay, there's no reason for me to be unctuous, so I'll leave you with this concept: I would like nothing more than to turn Square Enix's prissy hatchet jobs to our advantage.

I was soooo dissapointed. I'm new at playing video games, so i didn't know that this product would be the complete opposite of the commercials i saw for final fantasy.
Please, for your sake, do NOT buy this product. I'll bet the games further on in the series are what i was expecting, but still, i wish someone had warned me about that...so i'm putting it out there

good game, bas remake

I am a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series, and i love every game in it, but this game is shamefull. The story is way too slow and too open ended at the begining, so its very dificult to know what to do at the start of the game. if you can get past the slow story and that the game is too open ended, and that every 2 seconds there is another random battle which makes you sick to your stomach playing the game, then this is pretty fun!

Believe it or not, I never bought this game before

Believe it or not, I have never bought one of the previous version of this game till now. So I got to experience the game without the nostalgia that some may feel.

To begin, I have played ffvii through ffx-2 (skip ffix though I bought the game), so I am a fan of the series. I dont get to play with my console much these days, and gave away my Gameboy SP when I got my PSP. I always find time to play the PSP for some reason.

So here it is what I thought:

Gameplay: very basic rpg combat: pull the menu, choose attack (if character is melee) or choose magic ( if the character is mage). Of course this is the remake of the original game 20 years ago that went on to be successful. It was a defining game of JRPGs at the time. So combat is 20 years old. There are no summonings as in later FFs, or break limits (if you play FFs game you know what I am talking about).

I found the leveling pace to be easy, I never had a party wipe out and all bosses went down easy enough. In the original, 50 levels was the maximum and it was tough to get there, making the game difficult in the orginal NES version. In the PSP version, I got to break level 51 (50 is not the maximum level anymore) just before I faced the final boss.

I clocked 20 hours from beginning to final boss. I read claims that it is an 8 hours game. My guess, is that the PSP version has upped the random encounter rate. That may explain why it was easy to get level 50. Most random encounters had monster that would died with one hit (on the first turn), those that didn't, died in the second turn.

Story: Story is very lacking. Four warriors come out of nowhere to restore some crystals. There is no hero interaction, party interaction, no character growth, no anger, revenge story, love story, etc, all the drama that you have seen on the sequels.

If it did not carry the FF franchise name, and knew the 20 year history behind this game, I would have given it a 3 star rating. But, it gets an extra star because without this game, there would not have been all of the other JRPGs that we have come to love and consume.

Short and sweet:

This is old school technology, turn based role playing. If you like that kind of thing, you will most likely love the game. I thought I would but was left pounding my legs on the bed at the constant interuptions of the turn based fights that pop up every time you move(slight exaggeration). Because I am a gaming geek, I did finish this and played it for 30 hours. Ten or fifteen years ago -- would have loved it. Now? With new tech and games like WoW and such...forget it!

Final Fantasy for the PSP

Most are saying/thinking, "Great, another remake of Final Fantasy 1". Me, I am excited to see this ported yet to another system! The graphics are much better, as well as the game is now in widescreen. The music has the quality of the PlayStation version, which is fine by me. The controls and menus are much better though. Overall, this is a great game for the PSP, especially if you are a Final Fantasy hardcore.

On a side note, I see lots of people complaining its a remake/port and that the game is not for every one... as for porting/remaking: how else do we improve the games we played as kids for the next generation? And who ever said that any given game on this planet is for "everyone"?

Enjoy the adventure which I fall in love with over and over again :D

A Game Remastered

Since 1987, Final Fantasy was one of the games that got Square out on top and is one of my favorite franchises to date. Twenty years later, Final Fantasy is back and redone for the PSP. The game is much better with a 16x9 Widescreen which is perfect for a larger horizontal perspective. The sprites look way much better than ever and all the extras from Dawn of Souls are there along with an additional dungeon that can put your skills to the ultimate test. Sure the game is a bit easy but the fun is to relive a game that has went through the test of time. Nonetheless, if you are a Final Fantasy fan and own a PSP, this is for you.

This is the first time i've reviewed something on here, and its because i feel the need to clarify where so many have complicated.
Basically, if you like final fantasy, aren't sure, can't find a good game for the psp, or wan't to try an rpg out that's guranteed to please, just buy it.
i can't stress enough how wonderful this game is and how much it has influenced gamers and developers alike. the story is solid, the action is classic, control is excellent. and the music will rock your face off.
if you have a psp just don't think about it and buy it. everyone with the system should get this. save anytime is great for on the go gaming. the graphics have been re-done as is the sound.
i'm telling you, this is some serious awesomeness. just get it. for real.
you'll thank me.
peace.

Great game for what it is.

I bought this game a few days ago and I just have to say that I'm very impressed with the way this game was re-done. I have never played the previous remake on the Nintendo DS, and although others have said it is pretty much the same game, I was thrilled to see the improved graphics and hear the improved sound. I played this game religiously when it was first released on the NES, and I feel that the updates were necessary while at the same time not too overbearing. The gameplay has been tweaked just enough to keep it from being tedious which FF-NES was at certain times.

The only reason I give it 4 stars is because although it is definitely a step up from the original, it could have potentially been better if SquareEnix had completely re-done it and taken advantage of the capablitiies of the PSP. However, if you are a Final Fantasy fan and have not played it on the DS, pick this up.

Pretty Good

I had been told to not expect much from this game, but it is much more fun that most people review it for. I have never played the origional ps1 version, and so as a fan of the final fantasy series (7 is the best) it's great to be able to play the early games with modern graphics. Don't expect this to be as well done as today's rpg's and especiall not as good as a final fantasy today, but its fun in it's own right
