GREAT, FUN, INCREDIBLE, BUT...

Okay, first of all, this game really takes it to the limit. The graphics, sounds, controls (minus the ability to look up and down) work. The Things, NPC's, and enemy soldiers come at you in a non-stop torrent with enough time to look around for some of the movie sets. The gore level is high and so is the adult language (I still cannot understand why a gamer who blows people away at close range and see's men kill them themselves by gunshot to the head would be upset at adult language-I thought the language was really right on). The smaller problems with this game come from programming issues (flame thrower shots down, you can be hurt occasionally by enemy on the other side of walls) but the lagrgest, also a programming issue, comes about when the games crashes (mine crashed right at the end). This can be fixed by downloading some patches ...Excellant game, pace, action! A definate buy!

Good... but VERY buggy.

Does set a nice mood and does have some scary parts, but the game is VERY buggy, even after the patches. Examples:
Player can unavoidably take damage during cutscenes, even if trying to skip them (screen black and AI's are active during this time on boss battles).
Ambience sound effects can play over the dialogue so it's hard to figure out the plot.
Team members can get stuck in their "...out" animations after they calm down.
Bad texture seams in characters faces.
Dead bodies which include wall textues (blood streaks) are not lined up on the wall; so the "blood streaks" are haninging out in mid air.

All of this really breaks the mood that they are trying to set. All of this could have EASILY been caught with a good test department, and wasn't... that's disappointing.

great mood too many bugs

this game has the best ambience of any game i have played. great sound, and music. really scary in some parts but sometimes the characters get stuck and you cannot figure out what they are saying so it makes it hard to keep up with plot.
you cannot kill any of your team and accidents do happen especially in a firefight. sometimes i shoot a monster but your team gets caught in crossfire and your objective is to keep your team alive. if they die it is game over. objectives are also not so clear at first making it difficult to know what going on. all in all it is a good game, scary with good graphics which have great bodies and blood on the walls. i had no "unmatched" graphics as mentioned by another reviewer.
all in all a good experience. you need to exert some effort but in the end it is all good with the thing.

Love it

I'd loosely describe it as HalfLife seen through Max Payne's eyes, with elements of Syndicate Wars (remember that?!), though its quite different to all of those. Confused? Sorry...

You wonder around an Antartic ice station picking up clues, survivors, trying to keep them alive, killing Things and trying to get to the bottom of what turns out to be a conspiracy.

It has a few bugs and 'features', but the graphics, suspence, plot and whole 'keeping a close eye on your team' aspect more than make up for it. Anyway its easier to bullet point stuff than write essays, so here goes:

Things I like:
- Interacting with team members, watching their fear/trust levels; great touch.
- The extra team members being 'individual' as opposed to the generic "Barney" style character (HalfLife).
- Being able to trust your AI team members to *really* help you in a firefight (as opposed to running in to walls and frying you).
- Graphics, sounds, weapons, AI, gameplay, interest - all good.

Things I don't like:
- There are times when a team member will change into a Thing. Fine, BUT you can test them with a blood test right up until the point they change, the test will be clear, then from out of nowhere, they change! This is not consistent to the plot of the movie or the game.
- Sometimes only a few of your team members will follow you into a lift or to the next level, which is really annoying considering the time spent getting them through firefights and Things. Ok so the game probably needs to lose a few people on the way otherwise you'd end up with an army, (processing power issue?) but so what! The fact that you can 'lose' a team member with no plot explanation is just a bit daft.
- Not being able to step over/jump over the smallest of obstacles, I mean I'm not expecting Lara Croft, but having to walk around a broken pipe or box? Come on!!

However these things (ha ha) didn't really ruin the game for me, just niggled a bit, enough to stop me giving it 5 stars. Overall its ace.

so addicting , scarey,& fun

When I brought this game I thought that it wasn`t going to be good. I now know that I was wrong, it is the best game that I have played in a long time. I really love this game It is so much fun. I told all my friends about it and they can`t stop playing it either.

Other Than Not Regular Saves

I thought the game was one of true suspense. The gore & graphics set it apart for one of my very first suspense/horror purchases. Minor problems of not looking up or down does not in anyway lessen the satisfaction of a good mystery game. It's unfortunate that you can't save at will instead of getting to save points. I view this as keeping you glued to the computer until you can get there. Addictive, indeed to say the least i've spent a lot of overnight computer play with this game.

Very good game

Some people here have complained about not being able to look up or down but you can look up and down without using the shift button by downloading patch 1.2 or 2 from the www.thethinggames.com The way you use your team is very cool. The trust factor is awesome. I found a couple of team members in one level and we helped each other out for awhile but then they ended up being part of the thing later on. The game is a bit easy but the one complaint I really have is that it isn't as freaky as I thought it would be. It isn't as scary as resident evil where you hear the foot steps and doors. There is a sound glitch in mine where it's hard to hear them talk but I don't think it's the games fault. Cool game.

This game is a awesome game. The story takes place after the movie and it stays close to the movie also and brings in alot more. You just have to install the mouse look patch and you are good to go. I also really enjoyed the squad fear mechanics. Graphics are good for how old the game is, and it is a really good game if you loved the movie.

Hillariously Stupid A.I.

sure this game is kinda fun if you're into the movie but really not all that great. The only thing I found entertaining about it is how hilariously stupid the A.I. is.

I even have a story to tell...

Upon the point where you have to crawl into the ventilation shafts outside into the underground levels, I realized I couldn't bring my AI helpers with me since they do not know how to crouch.

So rather than leaving them out in the cold to freeze to death, I decided to take them out of their misery. So after a good half an hour of trying to command them to walk into a corner, eventually having to physically push them slowly into that corner.

Upon doing so, I backed up a good distance and equipped the grenade launcher, switched the first person view and right as I raised the cross hair to their general location, one of my team members said the most random, yet most hilariously appropriate thing ever...!

"I have a bad feeling about this..."
