3 Stars - Online Multiplayer only

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 2 / 2

What you get for online multiplayer with this expansion are 3 things: New weapons, new maps and new play modes. While the expansion is good, it has a 'rushed out the door' feel. For example, there is a problem in multiplayer in which both sides are wearing the same color clothing on some maps. One will be solid blue, the other will be blue camo. This should have been picked up on.

The maps are very attractive and of high quality, however there are odd spots in which you have to use ladders and open doors differently than in RS (you have to back away or aim at a specific spot on the door). Not a good thing to have when you are trying to hurry to a choke point. Hopefully these gets fixed.

The new weapons are interesting, but as mentioned before, one points at an odd angle, and many firing sounds seem to be muted.

The new game play modes are what really carry this expansion. While initially I was not interested in these at all, the capture the enemy game mode have my friends and I addicted. It was nice to get a positive surprise, especially with some of the minor let downs concerning the other areas of the game. Still, this mode is not without its problems as well. If you get handcuffed and are subsequently flashbanged, get used to the ringing sound, because it won't end until the round does.

I bought this only for the online play. I have no idea what the single player campaign offers.

If the patches that have been promised fix the problems present, RS:AS is a 4 star expansion. As is, the expansion rates a 3.

Rainbow Six is in trouble

I love the Rainbow Six Series. I'm in the military, have graduated from both Anti-Terror and Team Tactics schools. The Rainbow Six Series is an excellent series. The Tactics needed to play the game are almost identical to those used in real Close Quarters Combat scenarios.
That being said. WOW IS THIS ADD ON BUGGY! I played Raven Shield with no noticable problems, but when I added the Athena Sword Patch, all hell broke loose. Suddenly my computer began locking up, The sound would crash, and overall just a host of problems with the add on. My computer is used almost exclusively for gaming, and the Athena Sword patch was the only thing that had changed from when I played Raven Shield, so that is why I hold it responsible. I think Reading the reviews here supports my theory.
The maps looked very good, especialy for Online Play, but the glitches in the game became so frustrating that I have yet to play them all. Evidently you can download fixes, but if I have to patch a game more than once, just to make it work, then I have no interest in playing it. Skip this game and wait for the next one. Hopefully they'll get it right. I'm going to give them one more chance before I give up on UBI Soft.
I also didnt' appriciate them installing thier hokey website shortcut on and software on my computer. (Yes, I realize that it's easy to remove, and if I payed closer attention I could have prevented it from being installed, but come on.)
Rainbow Six Series is a great series, but I fear that it may go the way of Mech Warrior. Skip this game.

This expansion pack to Ravenshield promises a lot.

Unfortunately, as with Ravenshield they have only partly delivered. RVS was a single player game with huge multiplayer potential. Sadly, several bugs made the game highly frustrating, and changes from patch to patch had a huge impact on multiplayer performance.

The company UBI promised dedicated server versions both Win32 and (more importantly) Linux. More than 6 months later, there is still no sign of these. They told us they were releasing an SDK.. No sign of that either.

There are a few people concerned that this upcoming expansion will largely be a pay-for-play patch to the existing games with a handful of new weapons. Personally I think that this expansion could be the shot-in-the-arm, that this game needs.. but only if UBI deliver it with the SDK and Dedicated Servers.

To keep up to date with the progress of Ravenshield and Athena Sword, I can recommend that you visit UBI's General Ravenshield Forum at http://forums.ubi.com/messages/overview.asp?name=us_ravenshield_gd

ATHENA SWORD IS BETTER THAN COUNTER-STRIKE

First when Raven Shield came out, no one really knew about it, intill the world wide XBOX commercials came out, so then it was the most online xbox live game ever played! So I am very proud to say that Athena Sword will rock as well, and will out number all the other games that "supposedly" are good games...Like Counter-Strike for example, ummm wait, no that game just SUCKED. Same as Condition Zero and all those dumb STARWARS games. I really can't believe that people accually play those sad games...Oh if only they knew.

Raven shield is a fun game, but it still has a lot of bugs in it. I suggest waiting until they get the bugs fixed in the origional game before buying an expantion pack for it. Also, the origional game had 15 single player and 6 multiplayer maps. The rest of the maps out there are mods so if they include new modes of play, those modes probably won't work on moded maps unless the maps are upgraded individually. So, again I suggest waiting.

Raven Shield is a serious shooter behold

Ok after reading these reviews its quite obvious that the writers have barely played Raven Shield. I've been playing for about 3 or 4 months and I have no complaints but all praise. This game truly does make you work and practice hard to earn kills. Which ups the satisfaction when a kill is achieved. All I play is online so I don't have much to say about single play except the enemies are smart as hell. But the online play is great. Sure there's bugs but not serious bugs but very minor ones that UBI has done a good job of removing. All I have to say is this is the best tactical FPS shooter out right now. Just play and you will get hooked. Guaranteed.

LOVE IT / HATE IT A.K.A. UBI LIES ABAIN!

Having played every game in this series I see a few things from earlier games missing here. There is simply missing functionality, controls and ability to select uniforms, the ability to climb over small walls and boxes, etc...
Rogue Spear did several things much better than this game.

On the upside, this game is a LOT of fun even with all the bugs and the missing functionality. It's the best playing game of it's type with a real team atmosphere out there.

My last gripe is that Ubisoft promised to release the source code with this game which would have made for easy modding. They promised it and a year later it has not been released yet.

They promise the source code in December however so it's only fair to mention it. Then we can have some mods!

At least Athena Sword promises more photo-realistic graphics.

Buy Raven Shield used from Amazon and buy Athena Sword new from Amazon.

Well, surprise, surprise, UBI has delayed the release by over a month. The give no explanation or reason whatsoever. This is a very bad habit with them. Raven Shield was months late and now Athena Sword is months late. Why give a release date at all?

Amazon did have this game ranked as under 500th best seller on their site and I ask for what? For another broken promise by UBI.

Can we really expect the SDK in December? Will it be the first promise UBI keeps? I hope so.

I reduced my rating of this game to one star.

Great new maps

My buddy and I love the new maps that come with the Athena Sword expansion pack. We hook up on a LAN and play terrorist hunt for points. We play on a 6 min timer and see who can get the most guys. After we finish with all the maps the guy with the highest terrorist kill count wins. I've read some complaints about the game from people who feel they pack is short on missions. Since I only play it multiplayer, the large selection of maps is great. The AI is also better. The Tangos on this one actually hunt you down. They also lay down, which makes think they are dead. We have been playing this game since it came out and still enjoy it. The expansion pack made it even better. Tango Down!

The best game in the series

Raven Shield is by far the best game in the Rainbow Six series, and as we all know the expansion packs only proves to make it better.

I don't understand why so many people believe there to be a large amount of bugs in the game - I've only run into two, myself, and those happened during online play. It's no more buggy than any other game. As for this other reviewer at the bottom of the page, this game IS the EXPANSION to the SEQUEL to Rogue Spear, which is Raven Shield. If you believe Rogue Spear to suck, then you obviously are appealed only by graphics. Raven Shield retains every good aspect from Rogue Spear, except maybe the fact that you can climb onto objects in Rogue Spear.

Honestly, however, this game is an almost perfect sequel. Most sequels take the old game and completely distort it, with the only thing still intact being better graphics. This game has AWESOME graphics and very fun gameplay - playing online is the best.

Counter-strike still better

I've played ravenshield and boy was it fun!! NOT!!!!!! whole bunch of bugs and almost same stroyline as the first rainbowsix and that one was SENSATIONAL, but hey, a joke is never funny the second time, I spent more than 10 hours playing the first rainbow six and eagle watch(expansion one) this game? lets not go there. but I can say that I enjoyed multiplayer a little, but! I spent 39.99+tax to buy that game and guess what I played my 3 year old counter strike more! overall I can say that this game will have better graphic than CS:CZ but if you look at the bugs and lame storyline I recommend CS:CZ
