A Bit Disappointing

Well I am not a game expert or top notch player. I play for fun to kill some time. I have played all the past TR games, and enjoyed them. First of all with Legend, I thought the improved graphics were almost breathtaking, almost brought Lara to life. Although if you do not have a recent system it will slow you down. I was really frustrated with the new controls though, it took me a bit to just to be able to move around efficiently. I miss some of the old safeguards for us NON-professional game players, like being able to walk up to a edge without falling off. Quick saves and loads. Being able to collect multiple health packs and flares to use when you really need them.
I felt it needed more backstory, and more interesting levels. All in all its almost worth buying for the graphics alone. Nice to finally see Lara looking more realistic. But Edios needs to work on their storyboards, and control interface to make the game playable for all levels of gamers.

A++ Legend

I just want to say, this game is amazing, is simple one of the best Tomb Raider games I have ever played, compared to the previous ones, this one definitely goes far away with the graphics quality.
And of course Lara looks so real into this one, that I guess I will fall in love once more!!!

Fun, but pace yourself

This is an excellent game, in my opinion worth buying, but it's a good idea to pace yourself because the game will go by fast, and there isn't much replay value after you beat it. Fortunately the game will show you what percentage of the way through it you are, so it's easy not to be excessive. If you're not careful you could beat this game in one or two sittings. Other than that, very awesome.

Back to the Tombs, but Not Quite Back to Tomb Raider

I am one of those die-hard TR players. I was also very vocal with criticisms pre-game release, judging from trailers and then the demo.

All in all, it was fun, but not comparable to the originals, particularly 1-4. The graphics are certainly a major improvement, but, unfortunately, most pc players can not take advantage of next generation graphics. Still, wo next gen, the graphics are very good so that is a real improvement for the series.

The gameplay itself was choppy with too short levels, too short themes. What was done with the levels was a good effort....but it ended way too soon leaving the player feeling like s/he was just getting in-to the level and then suddenly, abruptly its over.

The game is walk-through style rather than expansive. If you progress to point C, forget about going back to point B or A. Granted, this happened SOMETIMES in the original games, but not always.

Way too much combat with crews of baddies. TR players want to explore and find, not shoot guns.

And speaking of exploring. Ditch the glittering targets and signposts that, unless you are blind, you can not possibly miss that "here" is where you need to do something or get something. Subtlety will win this game back for the TR fans and push this game forward for the next 10 yrs.

The interactive stuff is just annoying. Plain and simple with a BIG ANNOYING. Cut that out Eidos.

The headset should be used sparingly. Perhaps OCCASIONALLY, use it during a cut scene before a level to get info from the tech crew back home, but, for the most part you can cut it out altogether imo. It works for the movies, but not the game.

And bosses? This is not DOOM. Bosses after every level is so monotonous and boring and childish. We do not need to be entertained. We need to be engaged in "what will happen to Lara Croft next". I got more thrills just opening a dark door in previous games than messing around with this interactive gameplay and cartoonish boss stuff.

Please put to rest this James Bondish music and get out the old scores. P.L.E.A.S.E. Playing the opening "James Bond" movie made me wonder if I had purchased the right game. While some of the scores are very nice, nothing tops the old TR scores for mood, atmosphere and even the fear element.

CD did a very good job with the mansion concept, but, it needs to be expanded to include the whole mansion. A mansion with one bedroom and no baths or kitchen just don't make sense, CD/Edios. Does the tech team sleep on pool furniture? Give us the mansion in its entirety. It is worth making it a level in and of itself.

Can I say that CD is going in the right direction?? Maybe, if the company will listen to the thousands of statements posted in TR game forums and, not only "get back to the tombs", but also get back to tomb raider Lara Croft style. Minus tech team, Without hints a 2 yr old could follow with ease. Delete bosses, this isn't Doom. And bring back the errily beautiful expansive levels that have Tombish type obstacles not Men in Black style enemies at every turn. Give us back an inventory. Give us back a long immersive game that we can play again and again.

There are some seriously talented TR gamers out there. Give these gamers a consulting contract and heed their advice when it comes to the next game. TR gamers know what needs to be done with the genre, CD/Eidos, and it is up to you to listen and take this game to the ultimate heights it deserves. Eidos can not rely on old laurels forever to hold TR together.

I say that many things done were a move in the right direction, but keep on moving CD. Read the game forums and the reviews at Amazon for ideas, complaints, etc. and make a "do" and "not do " list. The not do list is so obvious because so many are saying exactly the same thing. Unless, "next generation" actually refers to the next generation of elementary school age children? Does it?

Tomb Raider Convert

I have to say that I've never played the first Tomb Raider games, or any of the sequels, save for this one. And after playing Legend - I've become a Lara Croft addict.

I'll admit that the game is short - but I don't really have any issues with that. For those of you who like a little variety in their gaming experiences, then this is good fun. The puzzles are interesting, and once you've got the hang of one, you ought to catch on to the rest.

One thing that did amaze me is the fluidity of Lara's movements. I've played a couple games where jumping from one place to another becomes an issue when it shouldn't be - you're not going to have that problem here. You will, however, take a short while to become accustomed to the camera angle (I'm assuming this is only in the PC version), which requires the movement of the mouse to manipulate. The first level where Lara explores a temple in Bolivia allows you to familiarize yourself with her movements. There are instructions that pop up during gameplay, helping you to get from one location to another.

Lara comes equipped with a PLS (personal light source), 2 standard handguns, binoculars (which can be turned on to RAD mode, in which you can view which objects can be moved, are flammable, are part of a mechanism to a puzzle or are fragile) and health packs (she can only carry 3 - max). When you kill enemies, you have the option of getting a better weapon in addition to your 2 handguns. You can also carry a maximum of 4 grenades.

The graphics are terrific. Installation of the game takes up a lot of memory (even more than SIMS 2!), so be sure you have enough space on your hard drive. The disk space use-up is justified, though. They have paid a lot of attention to detail in each level.

The two things that seriously annoy me is that you can only save at certain "checkpoints" and cannot skip previously viewed cutscenes. When playing the game and advancing to different locations, a pop-up appears indicating that you've reached a checkpoint. That way, if you die, you won't have to replay that level from the beginning. It's all well and good, but you cannot save BETWEEN checkpoints. Due to this reason, I cannot find a way to skip cutscenes I've already seen. E.g. Lara meets with a bad guy, they chat, bad guy gets mad and they fight. If Lara dies, you resume the game while playing through the scenario over again.

To sum up, if you're a flexible gamer who likes variety and a little challenge (play this game using the HARD difficulty level!), then go for it. If you're the kind of person who's into more of a specific kind of experience, stick to your thing.

Pathetic development and game play

What a waste of my hard earned money!

I have been a long-time fan of the Tomb Raider games until the previous one and this one. The so-called user manual that comes with this game is useless. Having to engage in game play during a cutscene is just plain stupid. Additionally, the movement is not the same as the earlier games, which makes it even more difficult to move around without falling off of a ledge. No where in the manual does it say you have to jump when using the grapple; I figured that much out on my own. Oh, and what is the point of having the ability to save a game when it only takes you back to your last checkpoint? What happened to the shortcuts for saving games?? Why should I have to escape out of the game every time I want to save it?? Why can she carry only three health packs??

Even worse, the guide that I bought, by piggyback interactive, does not explain how to play the game on a PC; only game consoles. In case they haven't figured it out yet, not everyone owns or wants a game console.

I am not at all impressed with the developers or development of this game. If this is a port over from the game consoles, then the developers did a sorry job.

I am through buying these games. They can come out with five more and I'd take my money elsewhere; I would encourage others to do the same. This game, like the previous game, is going on my shelf to collect dust. Both are so bad I don't even want to give them to anyone, much less try to sell them to anyone.

Eidos could take some pointers from Microsoft when it comes to developing games.

One of the best in the series

I remember the fun of playing the original game in 1996, and have played most of the subsequent titles (other than Angel of Darkness, which I played a demo of and hated), and this is a fine title.

The graphics are very nice, the soundtrack well done, the outfit selection feature fun to play with, and the sidekicks were a nice way to both tie in with the movies and make the game less lonely feeling than some of the other titles. It's nice having a story and seeing that Lara does have friends in the world. It certainly makes Lara seem less like a killing machine as she was in some of the games, particularly the third one.

I have been playing just to explore and am at the 14 hour point at the end of the England level. In that time I have all the statues from the manor and the other locales done so far, and for someone who enjoys adventure games, they have done a nice job on the puzzles so far. I think they did a good job on the level design.

I would agree it's not quite a 5 star all-time classic though. The motorcycle levels are the weakest part of the game so far, but they aren't that bad. The game's sound has a tendency to stutter on my system (an Athlon 64 3400+ with a gig of ram and a 256meg FX5700 card), and Eidos has ignored my requests for tech support on that, and considering the disc space requirements, one would think the game should be longer.

For those with problems using the controls, try using the arrow keys, have "use" mapped to the middle mouse button, duck/roll on num pad 4 and the grapple key on num pad 1. It makes the game a lot easier to control with those modifications, specially the use key.

Overall, I am having a blast playing TR:Legend, and I think it was well worth my $40.

A far, far worthier effort than it's predecessor!

Following the somewhat disappointing showing of Angel Of Darkness, Legend makes a valiant attempt at redemption. How? By simply cramming as much fun as possible into a shorter format. On the plus side, Lara never looked so good. The graphics are great, the dialogue is witty, and I really found the "Dragon's Lair-like" cutscene interactions to be a riot, especially when you fail to time the move correctly!!
Plenty of extras to unlock, and while the game is shorter comparatively, it does leave one wanting plenty more (and plenty more of Lara in a torn, slinky black evening dress!) I did not find the issues to be overwhelming with the camera, though there were a couple of times I had to be patient. However, with so many complaints surfacing about keyboard and mouse interactions, might I recommend a quality USB game controller to go with it. I had no issues with control while using one, was able to better control the camera, and it sure beat dropping 400 bucks on an Xbox 360!

Tomb Raider Legend-playability

The game,so far, is fun. I play at the easy level. The problem I experience on my Dell Dimension PC is the perspective will change when I'm least expecting it. All of a sudden instead of viewing say, from behind Lara, the view will just change to the top of her head. When your trying to kill something critical this perspective change is a major drawback to the game. I can't believe this wasn't picked up in the Beta testing. I bought the game as a "used" item so I'm very happy not to have paid full retail. It probably wouldn't have been worth the price.

I still like the concept, but...

I think I have played all of the Tomb Raider games and they've come a long way since the first awful, grainy textures of the first episode. Maybe they've gone too far. Right off the bat, the game wouldn't load properly. It was frustrating to have to try three times or more to get the thing to read the first command lines and start to run. Also the camera follow thing the designers did was confusing. The old platform was much easier to operate from a users' perspective. When something's good, why do they change it? All of the pretty graphics are nice but it doesn't make the game more fun to play. Tomb raider continues to be challenging and mysterious and I do like that.
