Over all a decent game. It lacks replay value once your top hacker. Game play becomes repetitive at times.

Fun, interesting, and somewhat technical.

This game, while dated is still an excellent choice. For anyone that ever has wanted to be an "elite hacker" or just thought it was cool, you should try it. The game is very easy to learn, there is a short tutorial and then it starts you on the missions.
The game shows you some things that are correct with hacking, but the game does take place in the future so there are fictional things as well. In order to progress you need to upgrade your utility programs as well as your computer system.
Every time I would get caught hacking, it would make me want to go back and try again. Its simple and addictive. Definately a worthwhile purchase.

Simply Awesome!

Uplink is one of the best games since the 80s! It may not have state of the art graphics, but perhaps simpler is better. The text adventures of the 80s had one advantage over 99% of any graphic games today, and that is you could use your imagination while playing. Don't get my wrong I love playing state of the art graphics games, but they get boring doing the same thing over and over. Why do you think they are developed to play for 36 hour game play? But games where you use your imagination can be enjoyable long after you toss out most of the games today. I put Uplink in the same fun catgory as Master of Orion (orignal version), which I enjoyed for an entire year the first year it came out, and never really mastered it. With the knowledge game developers have now, it's time to return to the roots of PC games and create games that challenge our minds. I highly recommend Uplink for players who want a challenge.

Never Thought A Hacking Game Would Be That Good!

This hacker simulation game is simply better than my imagination. You are first hired to do hacking tasks, taken by fairly good tutorial, and then moving on to the real world. you have to go through all kind of password cracking, firewall bypassing, Bouncing Connections, it even has its command line feature. You start gradually and have all the support material included as part of the game itself.

You really get the feeling you are in a hacking mode from the first look at the game cover. Even entering the serial number has never been so much fun where you have to go through a matrix of scrambeled numbers. Sound has a great taste as well... reminds me of the movie "Recruit".

If you are really into hacking, this game is the choice for you.

A must have for gamers

this game is basics simple and frustratingly hard. this combines timing, knowlegde, memory, and cunning. you hack banks, jails, companys, and people's homes and schools. this game is challenging and extreamly addictive. there is no way you can get tired of this game. there are so many places to hack you can never get them all

Makes you sweat

Nothing gets my blood flowing knowing that I have 10 seconds to wipe the logs on the computer and get out before the feds catch me. A great game in my opinion.

The only problem with it is that you need to be quite good to get far. The other problem is the STUPID verification that you have to do each time you start a new account. On the back of the CD label there is a Hexadecimal grid with numbers and the games says it wants what is in Row A Column 6. This primitive anti-piracy feature is reminiscent of the days of "Lost Vikings".

Other then that, if you can do well, you will get far. DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE OF THINKING THAT IS HACKING LOOKS LIKE. This is a crude representation.

Really Cool!

This game is really, really cool! For starters, it's pretty easy to get used to. Secondly, it's fun. The game's nerve-racking tension gets higher and higher as your Trace Viewer (You'll have to buy that at the start of the game for virtual-money) bleeps and tells you that someone is 87% hacking you. Anyways, buy this game. It's fun and will keep you occupied for hours on end.

A different kind of game

This game is probably best classified as a Hacking-Sim. As far as I can tell, it does a very good job of simulating the experience, even the tension of getting caught. As for advertising, computer game magazines have given it good reviews. Computer Gaming World gave it 4 out of 5 stars. ... I highly recommend you try the game.

Uplink is totally awesome. Very addicting and I play it nearly everyday. Unfortunatly however, I happend to stumble onto it while looking for info on real hacking so unless you found it that way too, I don't know how anyone would know this game exists. I was looking into hacking as a fun hobby but didn't want to do anything illegal. This filled that gap even though it's only losely based on real hacking, it still has enough challenges and things to explore. If your looking into hacking for the excitement and challenge, just buy this and you don't have to worry about getting shell accounts, teaching yourself the ropes, or breaking the law. You still get enough feel of what hacking is like breaking into big time companies, deleting/copying files, changing idenities, and all without fear of getting sent to Club Fed for a couple of years. Heard they're coming out with a sequal with a multiplayer feature allowing you to break into each others computers.... pretty cool :) In the meantime though, this is the game. Hopefully the next one will be more publicised though.
