Based on 10-minute video: simply amazing!

Although this game will not ship until the fall of 2004, I was lucky enough to see an astounding video of game play that was roughly 10 minutes long at the recent Games Workshop Games Day in Maryland. Reviews and previews in PC Gamer magazine earlier this year were very favorable. A brief trailer is also available at the Dawn of War website. Based on everything I've seen so far this game has the potential to be one of the most spectacular futuristic strategy games ever released. Note that I've annotated my review below with parenthetical comments for non-Warhammer 40K players.

If the actual game play is as astounding as the simulated play in the video and trailer, this game should be very pleasing not only to Warhammer 40,000 fans, but to everyone looking for a terrific fantasy/science fiction strategy game. The images of the Chaos Defilers (walking demon possessed machines with claws and huge cannons) tearing a Land Raider (large tank) apart, the Eldar Avatar (fiery space elf demon) wailing on the Defilers with his huge magic sword, Ork Killer Kans sawing their enemies in half, Eldar Falcon grav tanks hovering and pouring energy weapon fire into their enemies; all of it was simply amazing.

The game animation when the Bloodthirster (huge demonic monster with gigantic axe, wings, horns, etc.) appears by possessing one of the Chaos Space Marines made people watching the video at Games Day "ooh and aah" and people cheered and applauded at the sight of the Space Marine Captain leaping upon the shoulders of the Bloodthirster and then pounding it to death with his Thunder Hammer. It was spectacular!

If the game is as good as it looks when released, if it is relatively free of programming bugs, and if the user interface and other important features are fun and easy to use, I'll have to come back and give it 5 stars!

In the near future there is only gaming goodness!

Even if you're unfamiliar with Games Workshop, miniatures games in general or the Warhammer 40,000 universe (sometimes simply and affectionately called "40K") this game should knock your socks off. The graphics are stupendous and the action during the battles is absolutely visceral and spectacular. PC Gamer magazine has given this game three highly favorable preview reviews so far this year and the 17-minute video shown at E3 and at Games Workshop's Games Day has amazed all who gazed upon it. When I watched the video at Games Day in May 2004 people actually responded audibly to the scene of the Bloodthirster (huge winged demon) taking possession of a Chaos Space Marine and then cheered at the spectacular scene of the Space Marine Captain leaping upon the Bloodthirster's shoulders and taking him down with his huge power hammer.

The game designers are so good that each of the "races" in Dawn of War have their own "feel" based on the Games Workshop mythology of the tabletop game, and not just in combat either. Even the gait of the soldiers is different from race to race: the Orks lope brutishly, the Eldar run in a graceful disciplined way and the Space Marines and Chaos Marines fall somewhere in between, marching in a forceful and orderly manner. It's the same in combat where the Orks thump and pound, the Eldar perform amazingly graceful and lethal martial arts moves and the Marines are powerful and straightforward. Even the fighting machines of each race follow this careful design and are amazing to see; Eldar Wraithlords, Space Marine Dreadnoughts, Land Raiders, Rhinos, Chaos Defilers, they are all here and behave in a manner consistent with the other troops in their army. Even if you're unfamiliar with 40K, you're in for a treat. Dawn of War promises to be one of the best RTS computer games ever regardless of whether or not you are into the Games Workshop tabletop miniatures hobby. Dawn of War stands on its own as an amazing and exciting science fiction/fantasy battle game like no other before it. If you are familiar with 40K, be prepared to see the 40K universe spring to life before your eyes like never before.

I was lucky enough to be picked to be one of the beta testers for this incredible game and I can tell you that this is a "Must Have" title for me. The first and most noticible thing for me is that the combat animations for the units are not what most people are used to in RTS game with one a few frames of unit animation making the units fight the same way. When your units are in combat they fight with different moves instead of attacking the same way. The Marines will shoot with their bolters while at range but when an enemy gets too close they'll whip out their combat knives and leap into the fray. The Eldar Banshees slash with their swords, do backflips, and all sorts of other maneuvers. Another plus is that when you create a unit you get a unit of multiple troops (normally 3 or 4 except for special units). This is great for those who hate getting rewarded with only one troop per purchase like in other RTS games. I will warn everyone that it is a VERY bloody game... the Eldar Avatar will impale enemies on his sword before slinging them away and the Bloodthirster will crush his enemies to pieces in his hand. There are only two resources in this game... requisition and energy. You get energy from building reactors but you get requisition by taking and holding strategic points. If you put a listening post on the strategic point you get more requisition. By upgrading your listening posts you get even more. The individual squads are customizable too. You can create a hero (sergant for the Marines) for each squad and you can also buy heavy weapons for each squad to better let them deal with buildings, infantry, or vehicles. A nice bonus feature is that you can create a custom paint scheme for your units for when you play online so that your units have a very specific look. With the palate of colors available you can make sure that your troops look like nobody elses.
So far I've only played the beta but I'd buy it as is. I absolutely can not wait for the official release.

THE WarHammer 40k game to buy!!!

I was fortunately very lucky to participate in the beta for this game. At first, I was very skeptical about it. The previous WarHammer PC games were terrible. Just plainly terrible. But I must say that after playing this game, I am in awe. We have finally made a WarHammer 40k PC game that is worth its price tag! The graphics are amazing on both my machines (both 3.0 P4, 1 gig RAM, one with a nVidia geForce 4 Ti4200 and one with an ATi Radeon 9800, both running 1280x960 pumping about 40-50 fps), and the gameplay is spectacular.

The one thing that really got me, however, were the models: they're amazing. In fact, they're beyond amazing. They look so much like the table-top pieces it is not even funny. The game does have just about every aspect of the 40k game world in it, so everybody from the novice to the hardcore players will be satisfied.

All in all, this game is definately worth buying...I know I've already reserved my copy!

I was one of the many beta testers of this game, and let me tell you, I was never a Warhammer fan before, but this game made me one. The graphics are some of the most amazing for a RTS of this calaber, and with the pause and 360 degres rotatable camera some of the most EXCELLENT screens can be made. The feel of this game is incredable I tell ya, this game is just like Command and Conquer the original, a Marvel in its time. The customization of the NPC and squads makes you really feel in charge.

Now some people say warhammer is for "Nerds" "Dorks" and "Geeks" but let me tell you even if you hate War Hammer, you'll love this game just for the graphics and overall command, this game is a shoe in for Game of the Year. This game isnt worth 50 American dollars, its worth so much more. My hats off the the devolpers of this game, because the time I Beta'd DoW was heaven, on gamespy, without having to pay anything :p

All in all this game rocked my world, and if you like RTS of anykind buy this game, or you will be sorry if you dont.

When I was 5, like 14 years ago, my brother had a massive army of tiny things. Though he did not give me much info on what the stuff was, I figured out some things. As I grew older, I discovered a lot about this so called Warhammer 40k. I also discovered the insane amount of money and time people put into it. I always wondered about how Warhammer 40k was like to play and about the enormous amount of history in this universe. Until now, I never thought I would know. Now I can explore Warhammer 40k, though I bet its not as good as the real thing. Frankly I really do not have the resources or the patience to get into the REAL game, so this game is the closest I may ever get to it. I think there are many people out there who are like me, and now for fifty dollars, we the people, can command 4 immense armies. No painting, gluing, or poverty! The demo was great, it had some minor graphical clitches (though this could just be my computer, i don't know) but it was great! Go get the game! I very much doubt you'll regret it!

This review is based off what I have played in the demo

NOTE: This review is based off what i have played in the demo!!

Graphics
The graphics in Dawn of War have the most detailed models I have seen in an RTS.Going along with the models are enviornments that look like they have been torn apart by war, and destruction. The animations also have a big part in the graphical sheen of Dawn of War.Every unit has a set of awesome animations, for example the human mech units (Dreadnaught) will swipe at an enemy and then pick them up and throw them away, also the hero unit for the humans(Force Commander) will swing his hammer and send his opponents flying back.

Sound
The sound in Dawn of War is good. The units will have war-cries as they are charging at the enemy. The voice-overs are decent and some of the comments can be pretty weird, or stupid. When you listen to the sounds as a battle is raging on, you will feal you are there.Every slashing,or gunshot, and explosion will get your attention.

Controls
The controls in Dawn of War are like any other RTS.Use the left mouse button to select or create a group, and press the right mouse button to make the selected unit attack or interact with somthing.

Gameplay
The core of Dawn of War's gameplay is like any other RTS, but with a few thing thrown into the mix that make things a little more interesting.First off instead of mining for lumber and gold, you get money automatically. You can get more money faster by capturing control, or critical control points.Like any other RTS you use this money building units or structures. Each unit you build comes in a squad, not individually. You can add to this squad to make it have up to 8 units in the squad. Also there is a cover system, your units will be slower behind cover but will be more protected to enemy attacks. There is a single-player campaign in the game, and a Skirmish mode in which you can play with computer controlled players, and online or LAN multiplayer. In the final copy of the game there will be 4 different races, The Eldar, Space Marines, Chaos(evil Space Marines)and Orks.

Overall
I have not played the full game but I am impressed with the demo I have played.

Finally a different kind a strategy!
