This was the best investment ever. The game was jam packed with action. I think the first level was the best level Iv'e ever played on a PC!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a great buy that you will not regreat. I dont understand all this crud about it being a bad game.I dont see any tweaks in it at all.And I dont see any glitche either.

Half-Life is Excellent

It's technically competent, and indeed 'competent' is a good word. It's just very, very uninspiring, and after a seemingly endless and tortuous wait (the release was held back for three years, during which time many of the creators left the company), it's a disappointment. Not a huge one, as people were beginning to suspect that it might not be very good. Whilst 'Half-Life' had the advantage of suddenly appearing from nowhere, Daikatana's gestation was extremely public, despite the 'it'll be ready when it's ready' attitude. What's it like, though? Dull. That's what. Whilst by no means as lacklustre as 'Blood 2', it's infected with an air of carelessness. The graphics and sound are functional, the gameplay is no more advanced or entertaining than 'Quake 2', the character AI and voice acting are both simplistic and irritating (your sidekicks are infuriatingly stupid, and their death instantly loses you the game) and, crucially, both 'Half-Life' and 'Soldier of Fortune' are much, much better, and cheaper.

Have not played it...and dont want to play it!

I've waited for this game ever since Time published an article about the former IDsoftware design man. But when my brother bought the CD and played it, I simply was disgusted when I saw the poor quality of the game. Effort was put into this game but I guess it was all for nothing, as the game can hardly be played for a longer duration than half an hour. You get sick of the frogs and flies coming at you. You actually have to use an ion gun or whatever that is to kill a darn frog! A baseball bat would have done a better job. If you have played Half Life and still have the sweet taste of that lovely game in your mouth, I suggest you keep that taste in your mouth by not playing this game!

some mistakes were made

I'm not sure what people were expecting with this game. I don't think there is understanding that Doom was no great feat of design, it was just a lucky assemblage of basic ideas whose time had come, and it had the gameplay simplicity of Pac-Man. Loved Doom and I loved Pac-man, but in the current market of game design such magic recipes are scarce. I was not expecting a lot from this game, just a simple shooter. I loved it though. I haven't had that much fun in a game in a long time. Thief, System Shock, Deus Ex, Half-Life would be my top favorites of the FPS genra. I don't have time to go into detail, but:

1. Graphics are 32 bit and quite nice(question of taste). Animations are amazing considering they are NOT skeletal.

2. Level design is second to NONE. If you understand the ideas behind the levels and appreciate them you realize how well they are designed for their purpose. (I love the secrets)

3. The Sidekick AI I didn't have problems with. People tend to forget that the AI is doing a ton more than any other AI in a game to date and it's not perfect. I did not however get shot by the AI. The game Requiem, much criticized for its AI, for instance, had far superior AI to Half-Life but made more obvious errors because it was actually attempting more. Same thing with DK. The thing is this game was plagued with company problems. 3 years of normal game work was NOT put into this game.

4. MP is amazingly tight and fun(they are leaps above Q3 and UT maps for strategies), weapons are brilliantly fun. Those that think the 'godweapon' is the only choice, have not learned the other weapons.(I ranked 37 frags using just the DK and glove in a map filled with rocket launchers) I have always hated deathmatch as it was for me so boring until Daikatana. In summary I wish more people would get into the groove of this game. It is a great game(Not Perfect.) I'm very sad that I'll probably never see the parts that were cut, or a sequel.

Outstanding...2 years ago...

Excelent weapons, nice graphics (yeah! I like DK graphics), good sound but poor sidekicks and low ingame originality.

it's not a bad game

it's not a bad game but i have expected more from the co creator of all these great games like wolfenstein 3d, the doom series, hexen, heretic and quake. someone on the review page said that it doesn't work with voodoo graphic cards.it works fine with my voodoo 3 3000 (agp). so it's not bad at all but i'd buy thief 2. this game rocks

Believe the hype on this one. Daikaitaina truly lives up to the pre-release hype. Not perfect, but as the first release from fledgling developer Ion Storm, and developed by this came-out-of-nowhere wunderkind Joe Romero - I am only left asking, "how long until Daikaitaina 2? "

Making Good With Old Engines

OK, so its an old Quake II engine... There are a few additions, like the nice clouds. The difference here is controlling your mates (2 of them) whereas usually in 1st person shooters you are on your own.

This adds a certain spice to the gameplay but there is also your expected amount of hands on fighting.

This game still looks good, even with the outdated engine, but plays with an irregular thread of complexity.

the first level will have you reaching for the 'I am a pussy' level' but later this will prove too easy!

I would suggest we all wait for the UK patch (there is an American one) which allows saving at any time (so you can start out on the ' Bring It On' level) and fixes some nasty bugs.

Those 4 stars out of 5 are for playability, not good looks! There are a few beautiful levels but not what we are used to with Unreal etc (Give me a few lens flare effects to really make the atmosphere)

Still worth the money though, if you liked all the others you will enjoy this!

Thanks Mr Romero

Matt Nicholas

I've Got to Warn You...

I wouldn't be a responsible person if I didn't warn you about this piece of trash. The game industry has obviously passed John Romero by and left him in the dust.

The graphics are primitive, though not awful. Water looks squarish and unrealistic. The color palette of most levels focuses too heavily on the monochromatic. There is a lot of variety in monsters and weapons, none of which are memorable or impressive.

But who cares what it looks like as long as the gameplay is fun? Unfortunately, this is the game's weakest point, as the developers at Ion Storm obviously mistook pointless frustration for fun.

Let's start with the save game system. Gone are the days of being able to save your game where you want. In Daikatana you must find "save crystals" to save your game. No crystal, no save. What this adds up to is tediously replaying the same boring parts of the game, or simply losing your progress when you need to leave the game and attend to other matters.

The inability to save anywhere might not have been so bad, but in Daikatana you'll find yourself dying frequently and pointlessly. Sidekicks walk right into danger, getting squished by closing doors, falling off cliffs, wandering into your line of fire, refusing to pick up health... If one of these braindead sidekicks dies, the game's over.

Some people applaud John Romero's attempt to add some story to the game. This would be better deserved if the story were any good. What we're given is instead a meandering string of overused clichés acted out by stereotypical (and often racially demeaning) characters that make those B-movie flops look like Oscar material. That's not a story.

Luckily there are good action games out there that DO succeed in telling original and gripping stories. My recommendations would be Half-Life or, my personal favorite, System Shock 2.

I've been playing computer games religiously for the past 20 years. Daikatana is the purchase I have most regretted during all that time.

Please listen, and don't waste your money!
