What EQ dreams of being someday...

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 12 / 17

Having been a long time player of EQ, and having become completely fed up with the way that game is run. I came to Dark Age of Camelot and had to pinch myself a few times to ensure I was indeed not dreaming.

This game has eliminated all the worst elements of Everquest, and centered itself about the one portion of code no programmer at Sony can seem to comprehend... Player versus Player combat. In a way that makes sense and doesn't feel like the mindless butchery of Sullon Zek or Quake.

Not only are the classes and realms balanced, but the game play itself is much more optimized and exciting. No mindless button pushing on endless computer generated critters. Instead you need strategy and a good comprehension of HOW to play your character.

Overall the best Fantasy MMORPG I have seen, enjoyable even when you reach the highest levels, and it doesn't take months of play to get there.

Those who don't like MMORPGs should stick to Unreal & Quake

Dark Age of Camelot (DAoC) is, arguably, the best MMORPG currently available due to its unique focus on 'realm' (i.e., large-scale player v. player - PVP) combat. It *loosely* weaves Arthurian, Celtic and Viking lore into a world in which the three are always in conflict. However, in its effort to combine character development (i.e., largely player v. environment - PVE) with PVP, it has attracted a core of players who want nothing more than to have the game become a first-person shooter - ala Unreal Tournament.

While most players aren't big PVE fans, we can understand appreciate the importance of 'investing' some time and effort to develop a persona in a MMORPG environment to progress to an end-game goal, which includes defending your lands (by slaying 'invaders' played by other people). It makes good business sense if you're trying to keep a monthly subscriber base.

It's a shame that the featured responses are panning a very good game and giving you a warped sense of its merit based solely upon their selfish desire to turn DAoC into yet another mindless first-person shooter game.

How can you....?

write a crappy review about an expansion that hasn't even been released or even announced by Mythic yet? You're probably both some 13 year old kids that think you know everything. Yes, ToA was a stupid expansion that they probably should have spent more time testing, but don't discount something before it comes out if you didn't like ToA. I'm an avid player of Daoc and have been for over 2 years now (soon I will be beta testing the next expansion for it), I've been frustrated at times, but I still get enjoyment out of the game. I'm not saying all this because I'm a fan boi, but rather because I think you should actually play the game before you give it a crappy review. I hate ToA.

Not For Carebare Sissy EQ Players

This game is not a vast land of quests and players that is a social experiment in a game, like EQ is. EQ players won't like DAoC. Dark Ages of Camelot is centered around 1 thing, fighting other humans in battles of 20+ vs. 20+. These battles are fast, and frequently frustrating if you don't understand how to make yourself useful. The expansions of this game exist almost solely to add additional Player v Player mechanics like new magical gear, new classes, new abilities for each class. This new content is then sought after in an EQ-style of Player v Environment MMORPG. But to compare this amount of Player v Environment to EQ is to miss the point. There is no meta game of reaching planes, questing key after key, then trying to kill Boss to get into next zone and start fresh. The meta game of Dark Ages is gathering with 8-20 of your friends, and seeing if you can out-think 8-20 other on 2 opposing teams.

catacombs? what's that?

DAoC is the best mmorpg on the market right now. So far there have been two major expansions - Shrouded Isles and Trials of Atlantis - and we're awaiting the release of Frontiers, which will change the rvr aspect of the game entirely. No one I know has heard of "Catacombs" yet though. Sounds exciting!

(...) The game is slowly losing its player base and I would imagine by the time this money-pit expansion comes out the game will be on the back burner. Keep in mind, you will need the SI and ToA expansions to even be competitive before you even think about this one. Not worth it.

Newest expansion pack

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 3 / 12

This catacombs expansion is the third major expansion of the Dark age of camelot MMORPG online game. Each expansion Mythic have improved graphics quality and features, and also added new areas to play.

Their last expansion, Trials of Atlantis, was not great, its true. Mythic admit that due to publishing deadlines they shipped it with bugs that they have had to fix later, and some even they are still fixing, but this is true of most online games, they are in a state of flux always.

For the main game review, check out DAOC gold and the expansion reviews, we have yet to see how this newest expansion changes things and how it works, the original game and its expansions to date are well worth playing.

Online games create strong loyalty, and some negative reviews here do show that they were written by people loyal to other games. As a player of DAOC I would say it is one of the best I have played, with a great community and many features that other games lack. I will be buying this newest expansion, but I am wary that it may have problems that their last expansion had because it was rushed out.

neutral review because I, as everyone, has no clue how good or bad this patch may be. Anyone who reviews it at this stage otherwise is heavily biased one way or the other.

Daoc doesnt need another expansion at this point, most peeps are trying to get through crappy ToA and grab artis/ML's but considering how this is still over half a year from being released and frontiers(free rvr expansion) will be out by then i gotta say it will be just about time for another expansion. It just better not be as buggy or EQ like as ToA was. I'm just hoping for some sweet looking dungeons with cool drops. If they do this then all will be well. No more scroll farming or ML's please. arti's are cool ideas but they should make u quest for the scroll peices...which should drop 100% after each quest and the arti's should drop 100% of the time...no more linos spawns please. If catacombs is done right i may keep my account open even through EQ2 or WoW at least for another month or two anyway. If its done wrong then account closed.
