Originally released a year after Quake 2, the Ground Zero mission pack offers Quake 2 players more of what they loved the first time: scary bad guys, excellent deathmatch levels, and a whole host of new weapons and power-ups.
Whereas the storyline in Quake 2 involved the nameless space marine traveling to the planet Stroggos to destroy the "big gun" that had been created with the sole purpose of destroying our beloved planet, in Ground Zero you realize that the Strogg threat is far from over. After the big gun was destroyed, the Stroggs created a new device called the gravity well whose catastrophic potential for Earth was just as powerful as the big gun's. Your mission? Destroy that well.
Ground Zero's 14 new single-player levels are more similar than dissimilar to the original levels in Quake 2, so gamers intent on experiencing something decidedly different will be disappointed. This doesn't mean that the levels aren't enjoyable, though. If you enjoyed the original Quake 2, then you'll likewise like what developer Rogue Entertainment did with Ground Zero.
The mission pack also ships with 10 new deathmatch-only levels that, in conjunction with all the new weapons like the chainsaw, ETF rifle, plasma beam, proximity, and tesla mines, will provide you with hour after hour of unbridled fragging. Realizing that Quake 2's primary strength lies in its deathmatch potential, Ground Zero boasts some excellent deathmatch-only power-ups as well. Both the vengeance and hunter spheres will go after and kill opponents who've killed you. The anti-matter bomb is the ultimate room-clearing device, and the Doppelganger makes a ghost image of the player that aims to confuse enemies.
With new enemies and improved AI, Ground Zero will have you once again whiling away the hours wasting Stroggs.
