Fun while it lasted...but it sure didn't last.

I'll just say, this is the shortest PS2 game I've ever played. It would be forgivable if the ending was big and explosive, keeping you hungry for more...but it just fell flat.

The gameplay was way better than the last, for sure, and was enjoyable. But I would have rather waited longer for a fuller game, one with more levels and a final boss that takes more than 2 minutes to defeat.

My advice...wait until this is a greatest hits title. Don't pay more than twenty bucks. You will regret it.

best Tomb Raider in years

After the appaling Angel Of Darkness, the Tomb Raider series is back and this time they appear to have got it spot on. Subtitled 'Legend', the seventh installment of Raider finds Lara back where she belongs inside dark tombs in search of ancient artifacts, and lets face it thats what Tomb Raider is all about. Crystel Dynamics have changed the control system so it's alot less frustrating than Angel Of Darkness, but the motor bike sections are utterly appaling. The graphics are absolutly stunning in parts but the game can suffer from minor slowdown. The camera can also annoy, but not enough to put you off your quest. Overall this is a flawed, but extremly enjoyable adventure and the best (if slightly short) Tomb Raider game in years.

Just Short of Incredible

Lara looks gorgeous, focus on her face for a bit and she blinks, shifts her eyes, and grits her teeth. Fall and you can see her wincing. Her body has never looked better, on the PS2 you can see the creases in her shirt and shorts. Environmental graphics are equally stunning. Gameplay is MUCH better, controls are intuitive and responsive. The interactive cutscenes are fun to watch and a great way to break up the action. Some of the visuals in this game are absolutely awe-inspiring. Tomb raiding is bookended by intense combat sequences. Story is engaging, with a great cliff-hanger ending that leaves you positively salivating. Soundtrack is beautiful as well; I don't miss the original Tomb Raider theme. And the banter between Lara, Zip, and Alister is at times genuinely funny.

In fact, my only complaints with this game are: a. It's way, way, way too short. I recieved it Saturday afternoon, finished it by Sunday evening, with 13+ hours of sleeping and other random activities in between. b. The tedious motorcycle sequences. There are two. The first isn't all that bad, but the second continues on for like 15 minutes, an eternity in gaming.

Disappointing

I have played all the TR and was expecting MUCH MORE from this one.
Major flaws of this game are:
1. The graphics - dead dull when you think of those of TR1 and TR2. When I played TR1 and TR2 I sometimes paused the game just to admire the landscape, it was so gorgeous - St Francis Folly in TR1, Tibet and the Monastery in TR2 to give just two examples. In TRLegend, nothing of the sort. It is just ordinary game graphics, flat and uninspired.
2.The music is even duller. TR1 + 2 music, and also TR3 music was really beautiful. In Legend you would prefer the game to be Isilent, because the music is just a kind of annoying background noise.
3. The game is too short.
4. The game is far too easy. I found TR1 + 2 difficult, had to think and look up the solution on Stella's website more than once. Here, the guidebook was an unnecessary expense. More for the under 12, than the 12+ advertised.
5. The video sequences are not very good technically. They are no better than in TR1. Today one expects more cinema quality than these amateur clips.
6. Lara talks too much - I prefer her enigmatically silent with only (inspired!) music in the background.
7. Lara's body is becoming hopelessly vulgar. It is OK that she is sexy, but this time her anatomical proportions are over the top, and she looks more like a tart than the smart aristocratic heroine she is supposed to be. She looks particularly abysmal in the Tokyo level: what an appalling "dress". Give the girl the style and elegance that goes with her persona and please, for the next game, deflate her breasts a little. It would make her more attractive.
8. Lara's face could be much prettier.

To sum up: for the next TR I want GRAPHICS, MUSIC, DIFFICULT PUZZLES AND MOVES, and a game that last for longer than a few afternoons, as well as a pretty, stylish Lara.

The steady decline is over!

I feel very pleased.

Tomb Raider once again is one of the greatest games ever. Lara Croft comes back with a whole new game. Say bye bye to the old characters that weren't Lara Croft and hello to new Zip, Allister, and Amanda! Sleek and beautiful graphics bring Lara to life, and all the enviroment around her. Super-easy to control. No more pressing action to grab onto another ledge.

Lara Croft now is more believe-able. Now there are guys leading her... Zip and Allister. Zip is the mechanic and Allister is the guide. The british archaelogist now is more sexy and improved! Each level takes place in a different and unique place.. Ranging from deserts to forests to Arctic places.

Lara Croft now is much more easier to control. Now the system does not take at least 3 seconds to recognize the action you just pressed. No more annoying action button to press to jump and grab onto another ledge! A completely different control system.. X now is jump, triangle now is action, and square now is the grapple hook.

Lara now has a new gadget, the grapple hook. It is a magnetic hook that Lara throws to either: Bring metal things down, or jump across a gap. It is a pretty cool gadget, I could say.

There are only 8 levels, but each one is packed with fun.
Bolivia
Peru
Japan
Ghana
Kaziskhatan
England
Nepal
Bolivia Redux
Personally, the Kaziskhatan level was the harder of all. Especially that stupid demon who Amanda summoned.

New things:

Unlockable outfits

The grapple hook

Super-easy controls

Unlockable people such as Amanda.

YES this is the best Tomb Raider game ever! Forget about how short the game is, you can replay as Time Trials to unlock stuff... So go to the nearest store with a video game section and get this game! The price is lower now so.. Worth it!

Excellent Game.

I have been playing Tomb Raider for several years now, and I have to say that this newest installment is an excellent addition to the series.

Tomb Raider has finally stepped up to the potential that is possible with the Ps2 (let us all forget 'Angel of Darkness').

Pros:

+Scenery is beautiful (waterfalls, realistic skies, birds, etc)
+Fluid movement
+Lots of replay value! (There are several rewards to be found in each level, which unlock very cool rewards which can be located on the main menu)
+CROFT MANOR IS BACK!
+Diverse locations (Bolivia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Nepal, for example)
+Lara is EMOTIONAL. This is by far the most emotional game. She's no longer that neutral character from previous games. She's got a fascinating past, and she's determined to set things straight. In summation, the plot is great.

Cons:
-Definitely too short.
-Motorcycle scene in Kazakhstan was very long
-I personally don't have an issue with this, but I see how others could: It's definitely easier than the previous games. There is a RAD Mode on your binoculars, and most items that can be interacted with (puzzle wise) are usually shining. Sure, there's not much thinking going on in terms of the puzzles. However, I used to get really frustrated with these hard puzzles on the older tomb raider games, and it was very refreshing to be able to figure it out.

They could have taken another year on this game. I wouldn't have minded. It came out a lot sooner than I was expecting. And the results are less than perfect. My biggest problem is the camera. It's way too loose and often difficult to use. My other problem is the length of the game. Too short. Yes, this is probably the best Tomb Raider game ever made, but it could have been so much better if they just took more time on it.

Actually Good this time.

Amazing graphics and you can tell they really put the time and effort into making this title. Graphics, again, are amazing, and voice actors are great, Laura's little quibs are hilarious...Fun to explore each area and some of the puzzles are really hard to complete.

The bad? - Tomb Raider? so where are all the tombs? The controls definitely need getting used to. Also, the camera is really bothersome at times, and sometimes Laura's face fills the whole screen (quite silly).

Overall, a great game for one play through. I don't see any replay value, other than collecting all the items. Awesome graphics and sound, interesting plot (unfortunately leaves open for sequel, so no real ending here).....worth a rent!!! Enjoy.

Eidos really shouldn't be in the video game business

If the plants are done glorifying this pseudo-interactive disc of data, I'd like to give it an honest review.

Alot of what this game is, is a motorcycle driving game. For a good part of it you are forced to ride on a motorcycle as the ever sadistic programming code repeats scenery in order to dishearten the gamer as it become apparent that you are going through a seemingly never ending limbo of a sequence that was never fun in the first place.

Most of the bosses in the game would be able to kill lara 10 times over in a split second, if they decided too. Whether or not they decide to is completely up to them, you'll just have to hope you'll be allowed to play what you spent forty bucks on.

This is not a game you want to buy if you're into games that are *ahem* fun. Some would call this game "challenging". There's a big difference between challenge, and flawed design. This game is a prime example of when every effort by the programmers, desingers, and directors went into graphics graphics graphics. The gamer can just mope while watching lara get killed for the tenth time by a boss who can defeat his own weaknesses through a glitch, or inexplicably fall through the floor and die that way.

Having played this filth, I'm inspired to buy a game cube.

Lara is back, equipped with a multitudinous amount of fun!

Let me start off by saying, that I am a huge TR fan. (Since 96 when the first game came out.)
And even I was a bit disappointed with the Angel of Darkness. Not a lot, but a bit.
When I got to the mall on Wednesday and bought the game, just seeing the front and back was enough to tell me that this was "something".
I brought it home, and beat it the next day.
The graphics are EXCELLENT. Picture the Angel of Darkness with out the glitches, and in Tombs and Jungles. (And picture those graphics X 10)
The gameplay is outstanding. Traps upon traps, and puzzle upon puzzle haunt Lara's every move.
There are numerous vehicle scenes, and quite a few brand new features added.
Lara's Mansion is a titanic level full of unlockables. Not to mention the fact that you get to explore it.

There are only two flaws that I find with this game:
The very small array of enemies. (Mainly soldiers and leopards.)And the shortness of the game. It was the shortest Tomb Raider yet.

However, the replay value is tremendous. There are over thirty outfits to unlock, about ten secret cheats to unlock, time trials, movies, upgrades for Lara's pistols, character bios, artwork, etc.

This is probably the best game that I have played since The Angel of Darkness came out. And that was a long time ago.

If you are a fan of Lara, Tomb Raider, great graphics, or even just adventure, this is a great game to pick up.

Graphics: 10/10
Sound: 9/10: When Lara communicates with her buddies back at the mansion, it is sometimes hard to either hear their conversation, or the background sounds that are occurring.
Replay Value: 10/10
Originality: 10/10
Tomb Raider Fans will enjoy? 10/10 (Most Definately)

This blows AOD away. No glitches, bugs, or annoying Boaz spiders to worry about.
