A sharp change from previous Tomb Raider games

I can give you a little quiz that should tell if you like this game. Did you play any Tomb Raider game from 1 to 5 (we don't talk about TR6 in civilized society) and hate it? You'll probably like this. Played one of those and loved it? You'll probably be disappointed.

New developers have taken over the Tomb Raider legacy and they've changed a lot of the things that us TR fans loved and TR haters couldn't stand. In previous games, the controls had a steep learning curve, but would give you unparalleled control over Lara's movements. Legend has basic mouse + WASD controls now. The puzzles that made TR an action adventure game rather than just an action game have been thrown out. The level design is quite boring and mostly consists of a whole lot of jumping from one place to another. TR used to have quite complex and interesting levels, so I'm rather disappointed by this.

Lara herself is no longer the strong, sophisticated and mysterious character she used to be, but is now a friendly, social, sporty type instead. The secret, mystical locations that filled previous TR games used to fill me with excitement and suspense. The more realistic archaeological environments of Legend are interesting, but certainly not as exhilarating. Zip from TR5 is back, but he is no longer the fun, snarky character he once was.

What Legend definitely did do right was the graphics, which are lovely. I also like that they have a real physics engine, which is new. The AI is excellent, but TR has been ahead of its time on AI for a long time now, so that is nothing new.

This game certainly isn't terrible, it just doesn't have any of the things that made Tomb Raider great. The Tomb Raider fan base is going to experience a dramatic shift since these new developers took over. There are better games out there, but there are definitely a lot worse games out there, too.

A CLEAR IMPROVEMENT

Unfortunately Eidos never could appreciate the what a gold mine the Lara Croft series could have been. The Legend is clearly a major improvement in the Croft series with stunning graphics and story line. The keyboard has also improved from 4 flats to retreads but still needs work. Parts of this game still involves more fighting with the keyboard to get things done but is more the exception than the rule.
The second game in this video is Croft Manor which is separate from Legend and gets extremely high marks if you like puzzle solving and critical thinking. This section will keep you pleasantly hooked from the getgo. The fact that Angelina Jolie turned this series into blockbuster movies is a testament to the success of the Croft concept. Had EA or Vivendi Games had this series from day one, the Lara Croft games would have surpassed Halo, Doom and Call of Duty in a heartbeat to clearly be the best series in video history. The Croft series needs to be remade with the serious investment it requires at the very least. Lets hope Eidos gets bought out!

One of the great aspects of this game is its story. I haven't played all of the previous Tomb Raider games, but Legend has a much more personal story than the ones I have played. We find out a little of Lara Croft's past and about what happened to her mother. It's much more interesting because Lara has a personal interest in what's going on. The voice acting is also exceptional in this game. Lara has a couple of guys who provide her with technical support via a headset that she wears, and this provides many opportunities for Lara to interact with other characters. This helps the player to get to know the character much better.

As far as actual game play goes, the controls have never been more fluid. Lara is more agile than ever. This really helps keep the pace up. You don't have to spend nearly as much time trying to line up jumps and the like. Improved controls also makes fighting enemies a lot more fun. Unfotunately, the enemies are a little too easy at times because of the improved controls.

One complaint I've heard is that the game is too short. It is shorter than previous Tomb Raider installments, but that doesn't make it any less fun. Games don't have to be really long to be enjoyable. Sometimes it's nice when you don't have to spend months to beat a game. I still feel that I got my money's worth because, even though I beat it in under two weeks, I still enjoy playing through it again.

Overall, it's a very enjoyable game. Personally, it's is my favorite of the series.

I love this game it is the reason I got the PS2 so I could continue palying them. I love this game. I love the graphics and challenge of it. Some use a walk through others just figure it out on their own and it can take a long time to figure out. I can play it over and over.

Almost as Bad as Prince of Persia

Never played a TR game before this one and now I know why. I will say the graphics and sound were truly amazing. Two thumbs up there. But, game play itself was boring. This game reminded me of Prince of Persia t2t but with a little more fighting involved. I guess I'm just not into games where you have to swing and climb and solve ridiculous puzzles. I beat the game once, just so my money for the game and book didn't go to waste. However, it's still sitting on the shelf, so all in all, I guess my money did go to waste.

Anyway, if you are into slow moving, puzzle solving, wall climbing with a little bit of fighting thrown it games, this one is for you.

I am a die hard TR fan. Own every game ever made. I couldn't wait for this game to come out and paid the price. I was so disappointed with this. This is not the Tomb Raider I have loved so much. I guess the familiarity from the other games is one of the things I enjoyed the most. There is no familiarity to this game except she looks like Lara Croft. What a jip this game is. It's obvious that this wasn't created by the original people, just another one of those games that bore me. I won't comment on the details as other reviewers have done that already. Anyway, my review would be too lengthy if I did. I know others were so disappointed in Angel of Darkness but in my opinion it was a heck of alot better than this mess. Lara was unique in the older games, in this one she is just another robotic clone of the rest of the stiff shut'em ups.

I didnt like this game. I am a hug tomb raider fan i have been ever since my moms bf gave me the first demo disk of the orignal tomb raider ever since then i can spend hours apon hours plaing it but that may be my problem. In my opion the new company changed Lara way to much. The thing i realy realy loved about her was the bad a** independent lara she was. In this game shes no longer a smart mouth or a bad a** they also put her in a dress whitch is a lara no no. I have read a lot of difrent things about this game on amazon it seems to be a favorit but in some tombraider forms its called the tomb raider that ended the legend. My oppion stands firm i like that they brought the tombs back but how much they changed her into a proper lady realy did suck the other thing i didnt like was how easy it was all the other tombraiders was longer and more difficult you realy had to stop and think to finsh the other tombraider games but with tomb raider legend i didnt i got all the way through it with out much thought. I never thought id say this about tombraider but i was very very disappionted. However since there are may mixed reviews on it rent the game and be the judge your self before you go and by it.

Great Fun and Adventure.

This game is a whole lot of fun. I played almost all of the old Tomb Raider games on Play Station. I decided to try it with a PC version this time. It took me a while to get used to all of the keyboard and mouse commands. There are a lot to remember in this game. Since I'm used to a certain way of playing on a PC, I spent some time customizing the keyboard and mouse. Once I got everything set, the game played very well (especially since I'm running it on an old 1.2Ghz laptop with an older Ge-Force card. I really like the environment in this game as well as the challenges.

The good:
- Really Fun to play.
- Stunning graphics.
- Many cool moves to learn.
- Great story line
- Nice cinematics.

The not so good:
- Occasionally, I had some difficulty fighting the animals that attacked me. They always ended up at my feet and Laura's head would be in the way of me seeing them (and shooting them). To be fair to the game, there might be a better way to fight the animals than the way I use.

Bottom line: A great buy. I would definiately recommend this game to anyone who likes Tomb Radier or anyone that likes this type of game in general.
