How far we've come.

I got this game in Dec 1997 and for months me and my best friend did nothing but play it. At the time it seemed so cool and interesting. Today, it seems dated and dull. Weird isn't it? I have AOE2 and it is much better but that too already seems old hat. Even with all the expansion packs available for this game it will never come close to the complexity of the sequel or Age of Mythology. Buy it if you can find it dead cheap tho.

If you don't own it already . . .

If you've never played AOE, you must be new to computer games. And if you're new to computer games you probably don't want to spend $60 on the "latest thing" which might turn out to be a poor investment. So for you, I'd highly recommend this game. It'll cost you about half of what a new release costs, plus it's every bit as good as most games released in the past year (it's just that every one but you owns a copy so they've dropped the price!) It won nearly every award it was up for in its opening year 1998 and has since gone on to thrill countless junior emperors both on-line, on-LAN and totally solo. Read the other reviews to see what the game is about, but if you're undecided, I'd HIGHLY recommend trying it out. Even better, try AOE Gold Edition which gives you this game (the original) and the Expansion pack (AOE: the Rise of Rome). After playing the original you'll be begging for the expansion. And by the way, this game lets you play by yourself on a pre-programmed sequences of "campaigns" or on so-called random-maps; there's even a map and campaign editor if you want to create your own scenarios. Or you can play on a LAN network (i.e. your school/office with friends). You can even play on-line with total strangers (who will either loose bitterly or annihilate you within moments). Either way, you'll have a blast. Happy gaming!

Just one thing lacking

Age of Empires is a great game, with the computer playing as all the other cvilizations you decide to put in the random map game, death match, or scenario. Some could be allies, some mortal enemies,it's all up to you.The game is a good way to hone your strategic skills, with multiple difficulty settings. The only thing that annoys me is that in multiplayer Mac and PC users are incapable of playing against each other, so the Mac users amongst us ( like , oh say, ME ) who have mostly PC users for friends can't play against those who have it ( and subsequently almost never get pit against a human intellect.) All and all, it's a quite satisfying game.

This is a great game. It's going for $9.99 now, damn good deal. A lot of fun. Well worth ten bucks. Plays on lap tops. So you can have something to do at work. Wyatt Kaldenberg

This is one of the best classics game I've ever had. This game is released years ago, yet this game is still a fun game to play today.

This game's requirements are not high and this game can be installed on slower PCs or laptops. If you like this game, you may want to add the expansion pack available to enhance the features on this game.

I thought it was great but some flaws...

I thought that this was the best game ever until I got AOK and then I realised how much I had been missing out on. Totally unrealistic admittedly, in some respects - I would really get AOK instead.

Fun for All Ages

I'm a big fan of Age of Empires, and it's a real time strategy worth playing. Great design, great historical bits at the start and end of levels, great soundtrack too, and the multiplayers always fun, especially on custom made scenarios. You get to play one of twelve ancient races, (Choson, Shang, Yamato, Babylonian, Hittite, Persian, Assyrian, Egyptians, Sumerian, Greek, Minoan & Phoenicians), pick berries, build houses, hunt animals, pay tribute to allies and fight enemies on foot, horse and elephant. The campaigns are fun too. The Egpytian campaign is a great introduction to the game for beginners, a great introduction to real time strategies, in fact. The other campaigns (for Babylonian, Greek and Yamato) are varied and fun. My favorites would have to be "Holy Man", where you have to convert yourself a civilization with a priest and "The Great Hunt", where you have to lead some warriors past all sorts of obstacles and suprises to an artifact. You can make your own campaigns, and download them online, so there's always new levels to play if you're interested. The cheats are also pretty funny, rocket launcher men in the stone age, cars, getting to "be" the animals, etc.

Definitely worth a look.

It is an extremely wonderful game but they have a few problems sometimes, like getting "illegal operation" messages... I've tried it on several computers. But it's still an excellent game and I recommend it, for a cheap price of only 9.99... it's a great deal! ~ SnowEater11, Weymouth MA
