This is one of the greatest games ever made, period. I LOVED the highly underrated Castlevania 64, and when I spotted Symphony in the store I knew I had to have it. But it came in a discount case that hid the back of the game case, and when I took off the packagaing and saw the screenshots on the back, my heart sank. It was 2D! How could a 2D game possible stand up to a 3D game??

Man, was I in for a surprise.

The first thing I noticed was, the music was ASTONISHING. When I first walked into the castle and "The Tragic Prince" started, my mouth was hanging open. I immediately cranked up the volume. There's everything from haunting hard rock to beautiful orchestrated tracks. The best game soundtrack I've ever heard by far. I even found myself turning the game on just to listen to the music! You'll definetely want the soundtrack.

The hand drawn graphics may be 2D, but they are nevertheless gorgeous. Everything is so detailed.

The side scroller platform/RPG gameplay is a blast. The castle is HUGE and you'll never tire of exploring it and uncovering new relics and weapons. And at the end there's even a way to unlock the upside-down castle, with new music and graphics!! There's just so much replayability here.

The voice acting is admittedly awful, but it doesn't detract from the gameplay at all.

If you own a PSONE or a PS2, you MUST own SoTN. I also recommend Castlevania 64, even though a lot of people hated it. It's much better than Lament Of Innocence, which is basically a repetitive, boring hack and slash fest with pretty graphics.

I picked up this game earlier this year. It is extremely rare right now but it is worth the 36 bucks. Afterall, the price is gonna get higher and higher so I say go ahead and buy it before it winds up like Gradius Gaiden. So yeah, If you'r a Castlevania fan and you DONT own it, buy it or drown yourself.

This game still rocks 10 years later and has such a huge fan-base
that they are re-releasing it as an unlockable for the PSP
in Dracula X Cronicles (not to be confused with Dracula X) along with the original Rondo of Blood and Rondo of Blood The Lost Chapter (never released outside of Japan). I will buy it for PSP just to get SOTN and others should as well because if Dracula X Cronicles Sells well they may just make some new side-scrolling Castlevania games for the next gen consoles and I dont think I even need to illustrate how insanely sweet that could be.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is quite simply the best game for the Playstation and certainly one of the best games of all time. It has all the things that make a game great: challenging battles, crisp graphics, hidden secrets, an enchantingly spooky score, and an exciting background story.

You play Alucard, a blood relative of the evil Dracula, in your quest to put the evil of your family line to rest. Most Castlevania games feature whip-wielding Belmonts as the main character, but trust me - Alucard is the ultimate video game hero. His aloof yet admirable personality, sword skills, and awesome appearance make him a hero that you can truly be proud to play as. Alucard is a major contributor to the trend in good video games to make a more complex protagonist.

The most fun you will have playing this game is trying to get a higher "percentage" of the game complete by uncovering other parts of the map: a feature Castlevania developers have used in almost every game since SOTN. You saw it here first. After completing the first part of the game, you are thrown a curveball: the upside-down castle. SOTN was so revolutionary in its level design, yet it feels so natural to play. It is the most polished 2D game ever made.

Granted, this game - which is part of a series of loosely connected games based on vampire myths - does not have the best or most consistent story of any game; not even any action game. The basic progression of events will not surprise you or bring you to tears. What will bring you to tears is the happiness you take away from you when you beat a boss, find something new, or complete the game. Konami mastered the art of 2D gaming in Castlevania: SOTN, and with the age of all-3D gaming (even in Konami's planned SOTN sequel) it is safe to say SOTN will remain the best game of its kind. No gamer is complete without it.

This is the best game for the Playstation!

I think that this is the best game ever. The replay value is amazing due to the multiple endings. Most people would play this game more than once. Looking for all of the easter eggs and glitches will keep you busy fo a while. Especially the *keep your equipment at the beginning of the game* easter egg. Not to mention the hundreds of weapons. They also have 140 enemies, all of which can be killed with all of Alucard's spells. The only problem with this game is that it is now hard to find. Especially if you want the original version (not the greatest hits). If you have never played this game........BUY IT! This game is too good for a rental.

Even in this day and age of intense three dimensional graphics and cutting edge video game consoles pushing hundreds of thousands of polygons it's always nice to play something "retro" with charm, personality, and in-depth engrossing gameplay. A true testament to well developed, meticulously refined game design, Castlevania Symphony of the Night is by far one of the greatest achievements in Konami's remarkable history and quite possibly one of the best games ever made,...period.

Don't let the first few hours of gameplay lull you into believing that the game has little to offer the jaded gamers of today who demand flash over substance. Once the gamer realizes just how massive this title is and how many different creatures, boss characters, items and weapons there are to utilize even the most cynical gamer will be hooked until the very end. Appearing at first like a relatively simple platformer what separates this game from others of it's ilk is the incredibly deep RPG (role playing game) sub system which allows detailed control over Allucards weaponry, armor, magic spells and attributes. There are literally hundreds of different possible weapon and armor combinations which enable the player to experience the game countless times with a slightly different technique which as any real gamer knows means almost infinite replay value (something sorely lacking in most games of today with the exception of Halo, IMHO.) The closest game I could compare CSOTN to would have to be Super Metroid on the SNES in the sense that certain areas are inaccessable until particular items or skills are learned, usually by defeating boss characters or reaching a higher experience point level through repeated battles and encounters. This as most gamers know creates a certain level of addiction with the game where the player is constantly pushing forward knowing full well that the next level, boss, spell, or weapon is within their grasp if only it wasn't four o'clock in the morning on a work or school night.

Allucard controls with the type of spot-on beauty that actually makes simply moving about the castle a joy, even if only hopping from ledge to ledge while admiring the detailed graphics. To add to the control scheme and the games depth, Konami incorporated a spell casting set-up which closely mimics the controls used in the Street Fighter series where tapping certain directions on the D-pad or performing certain motions will unleash special attacks. This has got to be the greatest idea in action, adventure/platforming history as almost every encounter with an enemy can be handled differently, not to mention the fact that certain attacks are more suitable against certain enemies. The foes you face aren't of the push-over variety either. Most have specific patterns of attack that can be exploited by the advanced player but some are so nasty that you'll be shaking your head in disbelief while you frantically try to determine which weapon, spell of technique will work best. The boss battles, a hallmark of the retro game, are equally nasty and impressive. Many of the top level baddies are so large and daunting that they actually take up more than one screen making for some very intense encounters. But as frustrating as these battles can seem at first, with a little trial and error and a whole lot of perseverence any gamer should be able to eventually get past which again leads to a true addiction to this title and extends it's replay value.

While the graphics aren't anything to get overly excited about they more than get the job done with highly detailed backgrounds and particularily well animated characters with Allucards cape being most impressive. Candles flicker in the background, wind blows draperies, grass moves in the breeze, cobblestone is laid irregularily and in some areas blood, skeletons and carcasses litter the ground. No complaints here.

The soundtrack is also very well done in an orchestral manner which suits the game perfectly. The sound-effects are very impressive as well with some trully gruesome shrieks, wails and moans making good use of stereo separation.

In closing, anyone who ever played the games of old on the NES, SNES, or Genesis will want to have a go at this one, even if only to remember what it was that got them hooked on video games in the first place. I've played almost every big title released in the last fifteen years and can honestly say that this game is up there with my all time greats. You will not be dissapointed.

One Of The Best Games I've Ever Played

Symphony is just a terrific game. It leaves anything before it, and many knock offs after it in the dirt. Alucard is not a whip slinging goof, not that the first two Castelvania games were bad in any respect. This just turns everything up several notches. A huge amount of items, armor, and weapons to use. Including some upgrades favorites (The Axe, Holy Water, Boomerang) New stuff like familliars (Little critters who have special powers, and will be a huge help to Alucard), an RPG level Up system, so you are able to take on the nasty beast that Dracula throws at you. I have played this for years! And will continue to do so, huge amount of replay value just because of how beautiful it is. Just go get it, oh and a strategy guide or you'll be up poop creek.
