Tomb Raider: Angel of Rushed Releases

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 5 / 5
Date: August 21, 2003

The highly anticipated Tomb Raider title, it's release was rushed to concide with the movie, and the bugs are horrendous.

Even with the latest patches, moving Lara only slightly easier than teaching an elephant gymnastics. Sidestepping is impossible, turning 90 degrees is excruciatingly painful-- even running is slow, with Lara having to walk several paces first before any speed is developed. The most amusing move I've ever seen is turning while navigating stairs: Lara will do a psychotic cha-cha and invariably end up facing anywhere but where you wanted her to.

Clipping problems are the worst I've ever seen, with Lara's body parts often polygonally shooting through floors and walls. This is the most disappointing Tomb Raider ever, and I've played them all. Once Lara even headed out-of-control through walls, locked on some object in the level.

The graphics are the best of any in the 'Raider series. Voice acting is horribly performed, making any Hollywood 'B' movie seem polished. Cut scenes are good.

On the Monty Python scale, this game rates: "Run Away! Run Away!"

Explanations Needed

This 'game' deserves zero stars.

Can someone explain to me why it took this long to produce such an unplayable piece of junk when games like Max Payne, MOHAA and even Enter the Matrix are pushing the state of the art in playability? Just curious. And WHO the heck tested this game at Eidos? Just curious.

I won't go into the MANY, MANY problems with this expensive, over-hyped, amazingly, pathetically BAD 'offering', as those have been covered in depth by many other reviewers. Even the folks who claim stuff like "This game is definitely better than the other Tomb Raider games" had almost nothing good to say about it. Obviously they've never *played* the other TRs or they'd know that such a statement is silly.

TR's claim to fame used to be great playability. Unfortunately, the successes produced by the previous game engine/format led to either big heads, blindness, ineptitude, stupidity or something I've never seen before in a game development company. This game truly s#cks, and I have given it far more than a fair shot. So glad I bought it used at 1/2 price. $50 for this game was robbery, plain and simple.

Stay away. Stay far away.

Play this game to practice PATIENCE >:(

Okay, so I'm not a gamer but seriously there cannot be a more frustrating game out there. Well, maybe...Here's the thing: Tomb Raider is such a big stinking deal among gamers I figured since I have a pretty good PC I'd invest in some cool (used)games for my past time. I got very lucky or so I thought when the price was marked down to $4.99 with an additional 30% off. This is more of a challenge than I care for. Ditto to most reviews that I read.

The one thing that I would say is if you Google this game for tips, walkthroughs and cheats it may help immensely. I got a few walkthroughs from various sites. I really like not having to go to doors that are locked. Very annoying!!

If you decide to buy this make sure of a few things:
1. You are not tired or in a bad mood.
2. You don't mind a challenge-although not mind boggling fun as it is cumbersome-then you may enjoy it after all.

I'm going to tough it out for at least 3 levels. There are 29 levels to this game. It's almost risky to continue but I refuse give up this early.

GOOD LUCK!!

Please do not buy this game.

This game is simply dreadful.

It is riddled with bugs. The controls are infuriatingly hard to use. (Walking upstairs in a straight line should not be a challenge, but Eidos have managed to make it so.) The new gameplay features range from the humdrum (chose one of three lines of dialog, none of which make any difference) to the downright embarassing, such as the "strength upgrades" that you get for pushing a crate along a floor, and which are necessary before Lara can make a crucial jump. The graphics are pretty, but are no better than average.

The story line is deeply contrived. Events do not follow any internal logic, but happen because the game designers wanted to put the player into a particular situation. (AoD is not the first game to have done this, but the overall lack of verisimilitude makes the plot's deficiencies all the more obvious.)

I enjoyed previous titles in the TR series, and bought this game despite some of the poor reviews. "Even if it's not perfect," I thought, "it's still Lara."

I can see now that Eidos were relying on this attitude to sell a deeply inferior product that falls well behind the current state of the art.

I don't know if it is just me, but did the reviewers of Angel of Darness play the same game I did? They spoke such blasphemous and awkward words such as "Best game,-EVER" "A+" "Better than the others". WTF? What I shall share with you now must be kept a secret from the other "amateurs" and those on this review site that have only played six games: Tombraider 1,2,3,4,5, and 6, - as to not offend them or hurt their feelings in any way. Let me tell you folks, this is one of the WORST games I have EVER played. The PC Gamer review of 54% didn't stop me. The millions of copies of Tomb Raider: Angel of darkness at your local Electronics Buttique for $4.99 - didn't give it away. I alone decided to defy the critics because the game was so indiscriminatly cheap and the box cover was so goodlook'n pretty; in essence I was determined to play the game quite simply because Tomb Raider 1 and 2 were two of the best games I had ever played in the past. But now, I want my five dollars back.
Looks can be deceiving. Tomb Raider is enriched with fantastic, impressive looking scenes that would make even the most hardened gamers gape in awe. Fire and Brimestone careen through the air and delve into the burning chasms below. Caves are dark and spooky - lighting, shadows, and special graphical effects have never been better. To anyone who has only played a few several games or is playing Angel of darness as their first Tomb Raider game, the interesting gameplay elements of the Tomb Raider series will certainly interest anyone - at first. Beyond the pretty pictures and the gameplay elements that made Tomb Raider popular, this game reeks of boredom, anger - which will conclude in the breaking of your beloved keyboard, and did I mention that all you ever do in this F#$king game is CLIMB? What ever happened to ya know - Raiding? Gone are the AI, the enemies, the purpose of actually playing a tomb raider game. There is about 100 enemies in this Entire 30 hours of excruciatingly long gameplay. It seems the creators thought the series had more than enough bad guys, so for every bad guy they left out of the game they included a surface to climb, mount, spin, traverse, jump and grab, pull, push, shove, and lean upon. It is true, you will climb and jumb upon one million surfaces in this damn game. Thats all there is to do. Ladders, crates, and barrels - the full enchilada. Shouldn't a game contain more? Lara herself, can't do what she used to. Instead of jumping around the place like a crazed monkey, she pauses every time she lands. Every time Lara takes off she starts with a walking prowl before she speeds up to a run - I hated this when an enemy was on my tail.
What happened to the reason a person plays a game in the first place: the gameplay? The fun? Not in this one guys. Oh and lets not forget how much times you will load a saved game if you do decide to play this shoddy game...Thousands. Lara goes through these "powerups" or leg enhancements that power up her jump. You will have to locate these powerups by pushing, jumping, or climbing on certain random unidentified surfaces before you can proceed. These powerups impede your process, and they are more of a hastle than a benefit. Every time Lara powers up her legs she can jump farther. Unfortunately for close jumps you have to account for the new powerups hence you will fly right over the surface you need to jump upon and into the conveniently located chasm on the other side. There are millions of chasms, might I add. And lets not forget the "consolizing" of the new series. Enemies disapear when you kill them. Ammo appears when your out. All 3 bosses need to be shot to pieces, but its kind of dumb when you run out of ammo and have to run over to the "ammo appearing centers" to continue your gameplay. Last but not least, the horrible monster toward the end, the prototype Boaz. You can only switch targets by pressing the roll key - give me a break: This boss and many other situations in this game highly aim toward the purchasing of the angel of darness guide, because many puzzle solutions and ideas are so ridiculous that the gameplayer will start second guessing what they are meant to do, because the puzzles and bosses are so poorly made. The final problem has to do with bugs. The game makers took a batch of bugs out of the oven and they are feeding us some of the worst bugs since the Tomb Raider: Chronicles. Luckily, after various loads and reboots, and bomb threats, it is possible to make it through the entire game.
Despite my disappointment of this sorry game, I did have some fun "looking" at the game, and the first half of the game is better than the second, because the story helps. But quite frankly no one really wants to be playing this game, they do it because they have loved the Tomb Raider series ever since it started in 95 and they can't let the memory go. But the original makers moved on a long time ago. And after the last four shoddy titles of the series (especially this one) I will never play another Tomb Raider AGAIN. So if you choose to overlook this review and many others, I wish you the best of luck enjoying the "The worst attempt at yet another sequel". Maybe game developers should be playing games like these instead of good examples such as half-life, deus ex, starcraft, and the original Tomb Raider, in an effort to identify and grasp exactly what it is that gamers do not enjoy.

Better Than The Others

This game is definitely better than the other Tomb Raider games. Graphics are better and there are cut scenes to keep the story interesting. The controls default was just plain sad. No one uses curser keys for the PC, we use WASD...hello! I had to change almost all of the default keys for the control key pad. It is difficult to manuver Lara as she does not slide left or right, only turns. If your character is in the crouch position, you are unable to slide left or right and I found this very frustrating. If your gun is drawn, it is terribly annoying to run up stairs because although you are telling her to go upstairs, she inevietibley wants to go back down....though it is very funny to watch Lara run like a bow-legged guy up a flight of stairs. I don't care for game play that forces you to hit a function key to "pick up" an item, I prefer just running into them. Your character will be in the heat of a battle and you'll have to hit a function key to pick up an item...you'll watch your character in S L O W M O T I O N bend down and pick up the much needed item and then SMACK! you're dead, because it took too long!!! There is no cross-hair for aiming, so that's no challenge. sigh. Your camera view is constant and so very difficult to view your surrondings and impossible to see anything when you are in that crouch position. Game needs work, but has the basic core of the interesting story line, fun kick-butt characters, and good stategy. Check out No One Lives Forever 1 or 2, and Star Wars, Jedi Outcast for some great gaming!!!

Yes, I've actually played the game.....

Yes, I have, I have actually played the game and therefore I'm not basing my opinions on spectulation. But, I haven't played too far into it. But, it doesn't take long to realize some things are different from the other TR games. I should note that I am not a game playing guru, just a moderate player of these games. I have played the entire TR series. I was compelled to write because I actually look to these reviews to help me before I buy a game and so many are all written based on speculation of what the game might be. I hope this helps someone...

Okay, most importantly, Lara is now more difficult to manuever. Though some of it may be my inability to navigate effortlessly; the controls are less than perfect and do not seem to respond as they should.

At times, in other TR games, I've reached a particular challenge that seemed impossible and after 50 attempts and finally succeeding, I'd save the game to never have to face that part again. I am glad in this new one you can save as much as you like because you'll probably need it. I know I do.

From the start, Lara will need to perform sideways jumps and other acts in time-sensitive scenarios and it becomes difficult and ackward trying to line her up for a jump when you push the control one direction and she moves in another.

If you can get over the difficulty of manuvering, and having to reset the game every five minutes, it is enjoyable.

I gave it three stars because even though it has some disappointing aspects of the game, I continue to play, therefore, in anticipation it will get easier with more practice, it does retain some entertainment value.

Cheers!

I have to agree, This game is a waste of money,

Even with a good PC with game is a waste of money, I bought the games and was so disapointed about the utter lack of quaility that I ended up taking the game back the second day I had it. The game is very unstable and Edios blames that on not haveing a fully DX9 complient system. For example: Lara falls though floors, sometimes get stuck while crawling, general graphic errors, the game just crashing with a "general game fault error". At one point in the game you have to kill an assasin at the end of a hallway and the game glitched and I couldn't kill the guy and he couldn't kill me, I had just saved the game at that point and ended up haveing to go back 2 hour and replay that section of the game. When I returned the game one costomer said they got it for the XBox and ended up returning it because it locked up their Xbox. Although Their is a lot of cool thing that the game had going for it, If Edios had just taken a little more time in development, ( And fixed the autoaim controls, I think that the most frustrating aspect of the game. ) It would be a great game. A lot of the games graphics are very cool. I Really liked the "Sancuary of Flame" and "Rath of the Beast" areas. The game just suffers from being released before it was ready.

Bad Eidos, Bad!

Oh. My. God. I remember when Tomb Raider first came out, and my husband and I got it on the original PlayStation. It was great, for 1995. We got Angel of Darkness for our computer, and WHOA! It looked like Eidos had REGRESSED! The animation is choppy, jumps (basically all moves, in general) are hard to control and judge, and I read on a review for the PS2 version that you'd better come to love the phrases "save successful" and "load successful" because that's what you'll do, over and over and over! It's completely ridiculous how bad the game looks and plays. Holy cow, and the Glitches! At one point in the church, if you move Lara to JUST the wrong spot then the game gets stuck on the two boxers in the ring fighting, and you have to reboot the computer to get out of it! This game wasn't even worth the discounted price I picked it up for. Don't buy it, it's a trick...

Worth the wait, minus some glitches.

Not as explosive as the earlier titles but this game keeps you wanting more. The graphics are above avg. and the camera mostly does what it should. The sound draws you into the game like before, hearing things coming and looking away from the tv as if they were in your house. There are a few glitches when you read some of the many clues, under the Louvre I had something that repeated for what seemed like forever. I just made it to Prague and can't wait to get off work to play again. Fans will still have the puzzles and mazes that take hours to clear a room. This isn't a shooter though, Lara fights but not often, at least not early in the game. Alot of hidden places that you don't have to go to to complete the game, not little rooms with a medi-pac but large rooms with ajoining rooms. Just buy it, if you have a month or so to invest into being in front of your tv on the edge of your seat.
