I love it!

I don't know exactly what it is about this game, but it is one of my favorites. Its a simple race game (non car!) and very uncomplicated. You don't die or go off the track, you just lose time if you hit the wall. It is challenging too. When you race you are one of 7 or 8 speeders and I have to admit I have never made it to the top three, but I haven't given up. Its a fun, easy game to play with no confusing frills. Its a keeper.

The reason why I bought a Playstation

I remember way back when the Playstation first came out, a friend of mine only had a demo of this game because the actual game wasn't going to come out for a few months. The demo featured one ship on the first track for one lap, and you had to wait for it to load every time. I must have played it a million times. I actually got to the point where I could get in third place on the first lap.

Where am I going with this, you ask? Well, I have probably played more racing games in my life than any other kind of game. I have played pretty much every kind of racing game in existance, from Gran turismo and Rage racer on Playstation to Hydro Thunder and Star Wars Episode 1:Pod Racer on Dreamcast, fron Diddy Kong on N64 to F-Zero and Mario Kart on Super Nintendo. And I am here to tell you that this one of the best racing games ever made, not just on Playstation, but on any system.

First, there is the graphics. Yes, they have draw-in, yes, they are low-res compared to most games today. But you know what, these graphics are better than those found in most games made today. How can that be? Simply because the graphics have what is missing from so many other games, STYLE. And let's not forget that each track in the game looks VASTLY different in Raptor League from how it looks in Venom League (playing at a different time of day means completely different lighting, and the lighting looks amazing). Despite it's age, this is a BEAUTIFUL game. From the Martian Red Sky to the Far-North Crystal Course, this game is wonderful to watch.

Then, there is the control. Some have complained about the control, saying it feels too "floaty". But you know what? It's a hovercraft. It's supposed to feel that way. Once you get the hang of it, you grow to love it. It took me a long, long, time to be able to play this game in first-person mode. Every time you hit the wall, the camera goes sideways, disorienting you. But once you get used to controlling the hovercraft in first-person mode, you feel like you've attained a new level of racing skill, and the game becomes that much more fun.

Sound in this game is awesome. Your craft has a cool engine sound, and the voice telling you you've about to get hit by a missile is classic. But what really blows my mind is the soundtrack. It is my favorite game soundtrack of all time. I copied the whole thing off of the game and burned it onto a cd, because it's so great. And when I first ripped it off the cd onto my hard drive, people were downloading the tracks like crazy. Imagine that.

The thing which seperates a great game from a good one is replay value. This game has replay value like you wouldn't believe. I've owned it for years. Yet, every once in a while I simply must go for a spin down one of the tracks. The music, the graphics, the controls...Pefect. This game is a work of art. The best thing to every come from Psygnosis, and in my opinion, the best game in the series. If you love racing games, you'll buy this one and guard it with you life.

Anti-Gravity Racing at its finest

Absolutely amazing rush. This was the game that caused me to buy my playstation 3 years ago. Today it is still one of my top 3 favorites. The combination of screaming graphics, excellent soundtrack, and the techno futuristic style of the whole thing work perfectly together to give the player an incredibly sense of speed and realistic competition. This is a very difficult game to master. It took me many many hours to make it through all the tracks. It can be a bit frustrating until you get the hang of the subtle movements required to successfully control the craft. If you like intense speed and a real sense of competition, you cant go wrong with this one.

Thats right.I remember on the PSX' release this was the game to have.I got it along with my new PSX and I must have spent the whole damn night on it.Today around 6yrs later it HAS aged but incredibly not by much. The graphics are still amazing and bright esp the Japanese track and the soundtrack, while not my type of music is still excellent as far as techno goes with proffessional exclusive tracks and musicians. This also would have to be by far the hardest of the series due to instant stopping if bumping walls. The tracks are amazing, with some bettering the later versions.I say buy it because its real cheap but if you have the newer ones you probably wont play it much due to the amount of time needed to excel at it.

The WipeOut Review

For those of you who don't know WipeOut was one of the first PlayStation 1 games that came out for the console. Hands down one of the best anti-gravity racing games, next to JetMoto, I have ever played. The music will get you pumped and ready to kick some racing but. The design of the tracks are very imaginative. And the racing crafts are equally beautiful. However my only problem with the game is the controls, while overall they are good it gets a little hard to control the craft in the real tight courses. But overall this is a good game and will definetly leave you with good memories. If you like anti-gravity racing games another game I highly suggest, that I mentioned earlier, is "JetMoto."

I agree with the other people, this game is fun. But......for some reason i can't save it. if i do, it erases all my other saved data on my memory card. i suggest you rent it first, then buy it.

wipeout WHY?

AS with most playstation games its a clone like so manny
times before this time they stole the briliant koncept from the
mighty F-ZERO games that really kicked ass THE good things
about F-ZERO was the EXELENT CONTROL OF THE GAME the SPEED
and the possibility of destroying your rival plus all those
lovely cars JUMPS TUNNELS and fast gameplay.
WHY even bother playing Wipeout then the REAL thing is out there!!!!.

Beginning of one of the best racing series ever.

Although this premiere title isn't as robust as its successors, completists may want a copy since every game in the series offers a unique combination of vehicles, weapons, racetracks, and original music. The Playstation version of the game remains the best available, surpassing the Mac OS and DOS versions in graphical quality, game play, and stability.

The WIPEOUT series is the only racing game series I've ever really liked. This first installment is a conceptual evolution of Atari's 1989 coin-op STUN RUNNER.

Insanely Boring

This game is very difficult to control and it is extremely boring. It may have been a great game six years ago, but by today's standards this one is a definite loser. Save your money.
