As of July 2001, the only RPG worth considering on PS2

This is the only RPG an RPG lover will want to buy as of today for the Playstation 2 Computer Entertainment System. I've tried em all, Summoner, Orphen, Eternal Ring, etc. Dark Cloud combines the tried and true random dungeon format with some new ideas like breakable weapons and weapon creation, to create a huge RPG with over 50 hours of normal gameplay, not counting the optional dungeon at the end which requires 20 more to be fully explored. Notice the time: 50 hours. Remember games like those? Final Fantasy, the Chrono series, Lunar 2 and Star Ocean 2 to name a few of my other favorites. (Actually, I have over 240 hours invested in Star Ocean 2 - my absolute favorite non-FF RPG!) This game has not only stunning graphics and excellent dialogue, but actual SUBSTANCE my friend! There are dungeon crawling moments where you're not having millions of polygons and clouds of particle effects and fog being shoved in your face! Remember games like that? I hope you do by now. The fighting is easy to learn and Zelda 64-esque. Battles quickly become second nature and are actually fun to do in real time, but watch your WHP! If your Serpent Sword breaks, you'll never get that Chronicle Sword for Toan! The game gives you near-unlimited freedom with weapons, allowing you to even mix and match types and abilities with SynthSpheres after they reach the 5th level of usage. Item management can be tricky but it's never strangling. Money is easy to get and weapon upgrades are plentiful if you learn to go back to previous dungeons a couple times.

In short, this is an RPG that Playstation One RPG Lovers will love, unlike the blasphemy being spewed out lately that are mostly graphics showcases.

Looking forward to FFX!

Dark Cloud is one of the premiere role-playing games to hit the PlayStation 2, but it isn't your ordinary Final Fantasy-like RPG. The story places you in a world where a dark cloud (hence the title) has imprisoned and transformed every living being on the planet. For mysterious reasons, our hero is the only one spared, and it is his task to single-handedly rebuild the world.

* Create geographical landscapes using the new Georama feature system.

* Create a village complete with houses, hills, churches, volcanoes, streams and villagers. You'll even have the ability to control the weather.

* Assume the role of a young, innocent hero named Toran.

* Uninterrupted and instantaneous "real-time" gameplay.

This fresh game promises to deliver what you crave - strategy, battles and puzzles. But in addition, you can also create geographical landscapes using the new Georama feature system. Dark Cloud is definitely a game you'll want to explore!

The gameplay system will be reminiscent to Square's Legend of Mana, where you can use objects to create entire worlds, but herein lies the difference: none of Legend of Mana's creation is done in real time. The camera angles will be in Mario 64 fashion or an overhead perspective, but you will be able to roam the entire world with a full 360 degrees of movement in a large, intricate, and beautiful world.

Fun if you like doing the same thing over and over.

This was a fun game at first, but then it became very repeative. There really isn't much of a storyline (I guess I've been spoiled with Final Fantasy/Lunar/Xenogears type games). The only thing that kept me interested was building up the characters weapons. I certainly don't plan on ever playing it again, though. If you want a true RPG, I'd wait for some of the more promising ones coming out in December.

I LOVE this game. The only thin I don't like about it is that there are limited zones that force you to use a certain character. Make sure to level up ALL of your characters!

*note: There is one mistake in the game. The town with the Sun & Moon Temple is called Muska Laska, but the screen when you enter the town says it is Muska Racka.

Enjoyable game

I really liked this game. I was bright and colorful but not too childish. I liked the fact that the point of the game was to retrieve parts of the world and reconstruct it with clues from the inhabitants. The weapon ungrade options were inovative and highly creative. I liked that you could switch between the characters, all of which have different abilities and weapons. Then, there is the fishing. I like that you can take time out to fish and win point that can be exchanged for gems and attribute stones. I played this game for DAYS on end. The monsters got a little repetative, and the maps were all the same, but I still found this game highly enjoyable.

This game is pretty good!!!!

I just got this game today and it is the best game on the playstation 2 right now. The game combines all the best aspects of other rpgs. The game allows you to build up weapons and armor. It has the cool feature of making you get water when you are in the dungeons. I give it four stars because it is real simple, yet it can get you playing it for hours upon hours. The battles are like zelda accept you can not jump. If you are not careful, your weapon can break and that can get to be a pain in the A--, however, your original can not break. Overall, right now, this game looks great and has awesome gameplay. If you want the best rpg on the playstation 2, get this.

This game is gonna be awesome

This is goin to be the best game!!!!!! You can build your own town and fight in one game. In it you find Alta to build the town by goin in deep dark dungeons and fighting evil bosses. There were also a lot of differences from the Japenese version too:35 additional weapons18 new monsters, nine new items, two new bosses, an additional form for the last boss, one new duel battle, 11 new fish for the fishing minigame, a revised lock-on targeting system, a new chest quiz character that offers you a choice between items, new expanded combo attacks for Toan and Ungaga, enhanced enemy AI, an enhanced weapon system, a bonus 100 floor dungeon called Demon Shaft, and lots of other minor changes. There is also different story lines and lots of cool graphics. There are 5 other playable characters in the game. I even know you can add attributes to your weapons. (And to all you dimwits out there I will give you an example. You can make your sword on fire or have ice elements, or land ect.) I dont know exactly if they show it on the screen but it is there and does different damage to certain monsters. Ex. A water element on your sword works good against fire monsters... The game also has cool music and special effects. As far as I'm concerned it's the best rpg out there and I say screw to anyone who gives it a three because It is the best. Besides they only reviewed the Japenese version. I am definetly gettin the game and I think if rpgs are your type this is a must get game for you

Just Admit it!

I , personally loved this game. SOME PEOPLE keep complaining about how u have to drink water, repair your weapon, and play random dungeons. They say it got boring because it takes so long to complete a dungeon. I think they shoudl just admit , that they arent' good enough for the game. The things that i see as interesting and a challenge, they see as too hard. This is my third RP(the first two being ogre battle 64 and FF7)and i think it's not very difficult. So those who keep "dissing" this game, should stop telling the gamers who AREN'T AFRAID to play something that will give them a challenge, to not buy this absolutely wonderful game.

Not Quite Wonderful...

Dark Cloud is a good game that falls short of great. The graphics are incredible and the game has the feel of an almost fully-realized world. Unfortunately, the gameplay just isn't up to the level of the visuals. I do love the town building aspect of the game, but the repetitive dungeon crawling gets old fast. I also don't care for the weapon HP system, where weapon status must be constantly monitored at the risk of permanently losing a weapon you have spent hours building up.Then there is the design aspect of the characters and the world they inhabit, and to a great extent the gameplay itself. Could they possibly have been any more derivative of Zelda? I'm not a huge Zelda fan, although I did play through the first N64 title, but I was seriously put off by how much the creators of Dark Cloud seem to have "borrowed" from the Zelda formula.Despite these negative (or otherwise, depending on your point of view) aspects, I found Dark Cloud to be strangely addictive because of it's major positive aspect-the town building mode, which is really cool. That's why I give the game four stars and not the three it would get otherwise.

Bring an umbrella along...

Wow! When I first got my PS2 I was worried about the lack of quility games that it had so far.Contrary to what I thought this game is well worth the money I put into the system. While maybe not ranking up to the other RPG giants its great in its own way. No one would have ever thought of building towns in an RPG, but the combonation works great. It took awhile to get into the feel of the game, but anyone that gives it a chance will not be disapointed.
