What's Wrong?

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 5

What's Wrong people? Is it too hard for you? You people must be very lazy and stupid. Go on...go play somes games like Barneys ABC Game or something. Anyways, this game is very good to play because it gives a good challenge. I like the long levels because why would you want to pay money only to play a game for maybe seven hours or so? Why do you have to whine about longs levels?... when you finish the first area you can leave and save...and come back where you left off.

Once again, Sony's mediocrity in RPGs shines through again

"Zelda Killer?" Only if that means copying Zelda in every way imaginable can make it superior. "A league of its own?" Not exactly, file this one with Legend of Dragoon as a predictably unoriginal, mediocre RPG. If you're looking for that game that will pick up this slump of good software for the PS2, you'll have to wait even longer.

Now let me clarify this: I have not played Zelda 64 nor do I own a N64. I did not hear about how this was going to be a copycat of Zelda until I finished reading someone else's review a few minutes ago. That said, I still felt like I was playing a rather effortlessly made copy of it. For sheer curiosity, I tried Zelda at a friend's house. Even the grunts Link makes in-battle seems to be stolen from this game.

What is the gameplay like? For "Zelda-virgins" such as myself, it was pretty good at first. It was easy to jump into, and hard to put down for the first 5 hours or so. Good, until, after quite some time in the game, nothing really happens in the storyline (a Sony RPG trademark) and after hours upon hours of repetitive gameplay (yet another Sony RPG trademark), it failed to keep me within its grasps.

The graphics, while good, are nothing spectacular. They quickly get tiresome when you're in the same dungeon for 5 hours or more. Every level of the dungeons look the same, so if you have a high tolerance of environments as repetetive as the gameplay, you'll have no trouble there.

And here's another staple, the immense amount of typing errors, the third sign of a Sony RPG. While there isnt much text, it was enough to make me want to send money to Sony to buy a spell checker for the sake of pity.

Georama is almost innovative. It would be if Sim-City hadn't done this general idea first, and if it gave you more freedom. The villagers are very picky as to where their house should be placed. So picky that you'll wonder why Sony even bothered to let you build these villages at all.

In general, buy this if you liked "Legend of Dragoon" or if you've never even heard of the Zelda series.

Dissappointing

What seperates Dark Cloud from other RPGs out there is the inclusion of what Sony likes to call "Georama". As you progress through the game's many dungeons you'll discover elements that can be used to reconstruct towns and environments. Using elements such as buildings and trees, you can build up areas anyway you like. However, listening to the inhabbitants' and designing around their needs will provide you with better rewards and useful tips. Compared to the Japaneese one, the domestic version of Dark Cloud features a whole slew of additional features and refinments. 18 new monsters help to provide a bit more variety and a tweaked weapons system makes things easier to understand. You'll no longer be confused when to upgrade. Also, improved enemy AI and additional attacks help to add more depth and challenge to the adventure. Unfortantly, despite these new additions, Dark Cloud doesn't quite deliver the full experience that I was hoping for. To be quite blunt, the game begins to feel repetitious after a while. There's a few surprises here and there, but, the constant feel of deja vu is always present. Basically, for every level of a dungeon, you're doing the exact same thing. And trust me when I say there are a lot of levels in this game. In fact, one of the dungeons has 100 of them. Granted, the visuals are diffinitly easy on the eyes, but lets face it they can only care the game along for so long. As soon as you get used to them you really begin to see how this game could have been much better.

Terrible.

*I am so dissapointed to have played this game. I have played it for a long time, trying to like the extrememly hyped title, but after being a gamer for fourteen years, I can't like it. I even hate it.

*Not well recieved in Japan....Hmmm...I wonder why. I play many Japanese games and I can understand why they didn't like this. The characters in the game resemble anime or manga, but they are so shallow and plain. There is nothing exciting about the characters and you feel no emotion toward them. They have no 'personal conflicts', and without even realizing this idea yourself, you sense something is wrong.

*Random dungeon. So random that you need not worry about remembering where items are located. And no walkthroughs to guide some people who may wish to use one. Plus that gets pretty boring.

*Graphics...? These graphics aren't real great. They are on the lower side of the PS2 capabilities, regardless of what anyone might say. They are smooth and filtered looking, instead of generated. Anyway, they just aren't very good for the PS2.

*Plot, Storyline and Leveling up. I suppose I have a lot to say that could aide you in the decision to buy this game. Yes, this game compares to Zelda in gameplay and graphics. But...man is it dense. The dialouge is like the Super Nintendo in a short RPG. Only during a brief cutscene is there any talking at all, and it is all text. This game is not like the Bouncer with real speaking, or any normal RPG with actual options and quests. It's strictly linear and has one mission that must be performed over and over again. There are no special items or interaction between characters. My favorite game is Final Fantasy 8, so I bet if you are a Square gamer this game will make you sick! It is like a 3D platform, adventure game where the character just must fight the repetion of enemies for 20 some replica dungeons. There is NO world map traveling. To go to a location, one clicks on the locale on a map screen and automatically goes to that place. There is no character leveling up either, just weapon leveling up. That is quite worthless. This game might keep the attantion of a 8 to 12 year old child, but if you are past that age, please rent first to realize you won't like this.

Too Many Things Bog This Game Down

Dark Cloud definately has the makings of a great game despite being a blatant Zelda ripoff. This would be an amazing game if you did not have to repair your weapon and consume water. Those two features totally bog down the gameplay to the point that it is almost unplayable.

best game ever

maybe fun for kids

I have not gotten through the first town or dungeon, but I am not too impressed. The graphics basically don't have textures over them, just one color, there is no voice over either. This game seems like it was made for children. For example, repair powder to fix your weapons?! That is the most childish thing I have ever heard of. In Diablo or Dark Stone your weapons can, and will break. In those games you either pay a blacksmith or learn the repair trade to fix your weapons. Your weapons also last for hours before requiring repairs. In Dark Cloud after ten battles you recieve this annoying beeping sound requiring you to pour that "powder" on your blade to fix it.

The games enemies are not very intimidating either. The genie that destroyed the continent looks like a giant pig/pokemon! Maybe I have just been spoiled by PC games, but the idea of fighting gods and dragons vs. fighting giant pokemon-like monsters is far superior. This game just feels like it was meant for kids and not for adults.

suprisingly...not fun

new features, thats nice. o.k. graphics, but who cares? the game just can't keep intrest for me(i'm a big RPG fan). If you are buying this game because your fond of RPG's, being a fan myself, i can easily say you won't enjoy it much. The game received too much hype, and has in no way lived up to it
