In Ephemeral Fantasia you take the role of a musician/bard/theif named Mouse. Mouse and his talking instrument accept a job offer from the Island of Eternal Summer. Very quickly you soon find out not all is as it seems. Your mission is to break out of the time loop.

The repetitiveness of the game can be annoying (being stuck in a time loop) but after the first week you don't have to go to any of the events again unless you want to or are trying to recrute a certain character. Which makes this game very non-linear. The way you recrute characters is by convinsing them they are repeating the same week over and over. Its ok if you miss someone one week because you can get them next time.

Don't forget the mini games. I am not very good at the guitar mini game (which reminds me of guitar freaks) but thats ok. Its frustrating not to get a good score but it doesn't sffect the game's out come. Another mini game (there are others) is the drinking you play with Clair (a very inportant character to have). The first 9 times you beat her you get a piece of the map.

While were on the subject of the map, this is probably the most anoying part of the game. Find the different peices for the 'world' (island) map can be difficult and tiresome.

Its true the graphics aren't what you would expect for PS2, but really the're just different. Ephemeral Fantasia has a cartoonish anime look (which I like.)

I noticed this game hasn't been getting the best reviews. I think people are being to hard on Konami. I find this game challenging but entertaing and fun too.

What this all boils down to it that some people like it and some don't. Deffinetly rent it first. If you like non-linear RPG adventers deffinetly give it a try. Don't let reviews sway your opinion until you try it for yourself. Try to keep an open mind.

whatever fantasia

Theif or musician? In EF you take the role of Mouse, a theif disguised as a musician. Your partner is a 300 year old talking instrment named Pattimo. [dont worry mouse is REALLY young]
Mouse receives an invatation from pandule island to come and pay a visit. he accepts thinking hes gonna make lots of money which he does. But anyway the graphics are AWESOME if you like anime. the battle systems great and you get more allies than you know what to do with. one thing. the princess is THE UGLIEST GIRL ON PANDULE!! sure she might be pretty on the cover, but in the game shes UGGGGLY!! Rummys prettier. you'll get to know her when you play the game. anywho, inthe game the same 5 days get repeated. the princess is pretty much forced to get married to the evil guy stupidly named Xelpherpolis [sounds like a city] time keeps on looping soooo.. you have to stop time from looping

Those gamers who are familiar with Konami's other games will be in a for a real treat with this one. Most of Ephemeral Fantasia's problems arise from the fact that it wasn't created by Sqauresoft. Like Suikoden, the graphics aren't stellar and the music gets a little repetitive, but what it lacks in these areas it makes up for in involving storylines, multiple outcomes, an innovative and complex battle system, and challenging real-time elements. The positive aspects to this game far out-weigh the negatives. Most of the complaints surrounding this title stem from the repetitive nature of the time loop and the fact that the game is hard. My response to the second complaint is that it's about time we had a hard RPG for PS2, and that the game's difficulty is mitigated by the very existence of the ever-so-annoying time loop. If you die, the next week starts. Yes, you lose money and items, but the monsters on the island drop tons of dough and you can always get the items again (they even re-appear in the exact same places you found them before). At least dying doesn't take away experience a la Diablo II or Everquest. And you never forget moves or lose weapon upgrades. Furthermore, once you recruit a certain character the game provides you with a time vault that lets you stockpile a limited number of items and all the money you can find. I will say this though: without a guide of some sort, it's almost impossible to get things done. This is a convoluted game. I get the impression that the US got a dumbed down version of the game, which is funny considering how hard we seem to think it is. My overall conclusion: a good RPG with a great storyline and (FINALLY!) an interesting battle system. It starts out a little slow, but if you make past week one this game is a gem. Accept a challenge and pick this game up.

The game has a good theme, however the graphics should be better for a PS2 game. Final Fantasy 8 and 9 have better graphics.

What happened here?!

This game has some very inovative concepts but they are not developed very well, for example, there is a mini-game where one has to hit certain buttons at certain times so that the character will play the right notes. When you hit a note perfectly the word great is displayed on the screen, but it is diplayed right over the notes that you have to play next. It is very irritating. Also, the story can become boring, the same five days just keep repeating and you have to solve it. The only problem is that every time the days start over, you lose all of your built up items and your money. Again this is very annoying. I say that if you really need an RPG right now, then this is pretty much your only choice but if you can wait a little longer I would go with Final Fantasy X.

Could have been so much better

This game started off quite well. But it has flaws that just detracts from the game so much. A serious lack in the ease of finding the plot. After a while it can be tricky to have any idea what the character is meant to be doing. Alot of rpg's spoon feed the plot. This ones becomes so hidden that you are left wondering what is the point. The graphics are ok, but the repetative use of graphics makes the game not only harder to navigate but also visually dull. It just lacks deapth and interest. Interesting characters like rummy just are not in it enough. There are better rpg's out there and there will be better ones for the PS2 coming.

This game is overly brilliant in all area's: Graphics, Gameplay, Battle System, and Music. The most enjoyable game for the PS2 yet! You play as a young musician who has been hired to play at a wedding on the island of Pandule. Although when you arrive, you unravel a time consuming secret.

The graphics in this game aren't stunning, but enough for a solid game. The background art is awsome, and very rich in color, and lush with shadings. Brilliant!!

Gameplay is so smooth, and angles of view are in your permanent control. The controls are so easy that it hardly takes any time to master. Hold 1 button down to run, 1 to talk, and 1 to open you menu, its that easy. There are a variety of different ways to use the controls, minigames, negotiation, free-roaming, battle, and more!!

Battle System is described in just 2 words, real, time. You must be a quick thinker to master this system, but I'll tell you that this is the most up to date method around. You must be fast to choose your next ttack or your opponent will attack before you. You can use, magic spells, skills, and other tactical manuvers to win the fight. Your characters can also learn from eachother by using different magic. Cool huh?!

The thing that just blew me away was the music in the game, it never gets old, and there's always a new tune to play. Expand your horizans even more by playing your own guitar and playing plenty of songs, for many people. Its just incredible.

Last but not least is game length and flexibility. This game is so long, so fun, so exploritive, that it takes a long time to navigate it all. 49 different map pieces are scattered around the world, each waiting for you to find and explore them. A wide range of 10 party members to choose from, and us different ones at any different time in the game, its incredible!! Each character has a different strength he or she excells at. But this game isn't all fun'n'games, this is a hard core RPG that can get frustrating at times, but can always be resolved.
All in all this game will have unlimitted replay value and awsome fun for anyone interested in RPG's! This game is a must buy for the PS2, and if you don't buy it, your missing out on 1 heck f a game!!

*****
