The improvements over last year's game are remarkable. One gets more of a feel for the accleration and deceleration that formula one cars are famous for. The detail of both the cars and the tracks are astounding. I thought that in F1 Championship season 2000 all the tracks looked flat. One couldn't get a feel for the ups and downs of some of the inclines and declines that are such a prominent feature to some real F1 tracks. That has changed in this year's game. In particular, going down and then up into au rouge in F1 2001 is a lot of fun. In addition to graphics and game play there are some new multiplayer modes and a challenge mode which allows one to be graded on their driving skills in any and all conditions, for example, taking the chicane at Interlagos in wet weather on dry tires. A true F1 fan will enjoy how recent the game information is (i.e. Alesi is in a Jordan and Frentzen in a Prost), but any fan of driving simulations will find this game fascinating.

FAR Superior to the recent F1 game by 989 Sports!!!!!

989 Sports and EA Sports both released their 2001-season F1 games in the same week in North America following the U.S. Grand Prix. Of the two, EA Sports' F1 2001 is by far the superior game.

This game builds on the series of F1 games EA Sports has been releasing, initially on PSX and now on PS2. This incarnation of the series takes most of the eatures of previous games in the series, modifies the physics engine to provide more realistic handling, adds more options to customize gameplay, changes the AI to make the racing more interesting and exciting (with CPU-controlled cars sometimes four-wide down a straightaway as they dice for position), provides much more teammate and race information via the team radio, improves the replay function, sharpens the graphics, and provides so many unlockable features that the replay value is amazingly high for a "straight" racing game.

While Gran Turismo 3 is most certainly THE must-have racing game of 2001, F1 2001 must certainly rank in the Top 5. In fact, playing F1 2001 will help with the few F1 cars in Gran Turismo 3, and vice versa, despite the differences in handling between the two games.

More disappointing the more you play

If you are expecting the driving physics of GT3, you are up for a big disappointment.
If you are a F1 fanatic itching for something decent after months of waiting, then it could be worth your money... as long as you stick to dry races. Cars are impossible to control in the wet. Other negatives: weather changes every couple of laps, opponents don't change tires, pit sends wrong messages on your radio, etc.

A big disappointment

For those of us who expected a big improvement from EAsports..this is disappointing.First of all there are no rear view mirrors on the screen.Even 1998 season based PC games had this and much more features.
Another thing is racing in the wet is next to impossible and boring.I dont know how this game is getting great reviews..maybe some staff of easports are doing it(they also seem to be slamming 989sports f1 2001).
Graphics is very good but when will easports realise that graphics is not everything.
And in medium level of difficulty u can take pole easily since we can take the corners through the gravel without any loss of speed..dont know abt professional level.
My advice is not to bother buying this game..its not worth the money unless ur a montoyo fan.

Wow!

I am a huge racing fan. I was truly suprised with the graphics and speed of this game. Although i have been trying to make my way SLOWLY through GT3, I have found myself drawn to this game. I fing the rain and smoke features realistic and difficult to negotiate.

I hope this version gets the attention it deserves! I have not seen any online or magazine reviews yet.

My Opinion = Two Thumbs Up!!

I was skeptical at first but I'm glad I purchased it! It is just what the doctor ordered in F1 racing. Great graphics and game play. If you really don't like it just resell it on Ebay, I'm keeping my copy. If you are a fan of F1 you will love it. I hated the EA F1 Championship Season 2000 and it had better reviews, laf.

I'm already tired of GT3, I've had enough of mismatched cars.
GT3 will go on the shelf but I'll still be playing:
F1 2001
Madden 2002
Nascar Heat 2002

Yes it looks good and it sounds good and there is a great sense of speed, but yet another half-baked effort by EA, thrown on the market too soon (to justify the expensive season licence, I suppose).

This game is so crippled by bugs that most of its favourable aspects fade away facing the problems. The biggest problems occur around the actual racing. First off there are unrealistic qualifying rosters (4 times World champion Schumacher on 12th? a no-name like Heidfeld on pole?), ALL cars have the same performance parameters (so you can pole in a Minardi!?). The opponent AI ... big time: they are VERY fast in corners but extremely slow on straights (on which you can catch about 5 of them at once). On shorter races opponent cars NEVER pit when it starts raining (and it rains about 3 times in a 16 lap race), plus you are constantly yellow-flagged and penalized when you only put your wheel slightly off track.

Add to that other minor things, like not being able to save car setups, not being able to save game stages (only race weekends), no opponent cars on the tracks during practice, all cars have the same sound, weird and sticky car handling when releasing the throttle, most of the tracks beeing way too narrow compared to their real life counterparts, a pit radio that keeps giving you wrong and useless information, and an overall very hectic gameplay that never gives you the feeling that you are in control -- and you got a no winner.

Sure, that reflection in Montoya's helmet is awesome, but what good for if it doesn't feel like him. If you are satisfied with eye candy and the occasional lap around Monaco by yourself, then this title is for you. It looks great and it gives you a sense of speed. However, if you are a little more into F1 racing and want to get a feel for the whole thing i recommend 989s Formula One, which looks and sounds inferior but offers a much richer gameplay.

The best F1 experience!!!

Great improvement from last version. I own all F1 games and the 989sports version as well but this is the best one so far. If you love speed and F1 in general you have to get this!!!!! Unlike other reviews...... it is possible to drive under all weather conditions. You need to set up the car right and you need to make your right choice of tyres. It takes time to learn all the tracks, you need to get into it. Thats the fun of it. If you want to drive arcade for a six year old stay with "Cart Fury" or "GT3" where you can't get hurt/damaged. This F1 game requires brains, feel, real passion and dedication like in todays real F1 world!!! Sample of excellent graphics and details i would like to point out are: the helmet reflects treelines/shadows, Indexfinger shifts and .......take a look back while you race Monte Carlo in the Tunnelsection at high speed.

The best F1 game
