Pretty fun.

I picked up this game just recently. After seeing not to stellar reviews I still decided to play it. And I actually really liked it. Too many people compare it to Final Fantasy X, although they are two seperate game's entirely. I'm a huge Final Fantasy fan, obviously, and I still liked this game.

The Judgement sphere things for collecting items and fighting battle's is a nice change. It give's you a chance to see how much damage you will inflict upon an enemy. As monsters go, there is a nice variety of of types you face off against.

If you can't stand anything below par of Final Fantasy X, you might want to skip this game. The graphics are nice, but there just aren't as many FMV's as FFX. But I still recommend this game.

Boring and Unimaginative

I must say that I am surprised to see that this game has gotten such complimentary reviews and unfortunately there is no option for zero stars.

To begin with the game begins with a gratuitously violent opening that surprised me. Not that I am squeamish but I am accustomed to the proverbial warnings about graphic violence. In this case there were none that I noticed. Despite the gorey beginning, however, the game lurches to a slow start and it becomes immediately evident that one is about to begin yet another Final Fantasy knock-off.

After about two hours of gameplay, most of which consisted of boring scrolling dialogue, I found myself completely disinterested and ready to put the game up for sale on Ebay. There is entirely too much innane chatter which merely repeats, at great length, the plot which is described in the instruction manual. Consequently I was left feeling utterly no emotion for the characters. The story line is unimaginative at best and suspiciously similar to the Legend of Dragoon for the PS1.

Perhaps the most annoying thing about this game is the ridiculous historical innacuracies. If game designers are going to set a game in a specific time and historical context they should consider that not every player is under the age of 8. Among the more absurd elements of the game are the oddly anglo features of the Japanese officers and the female Colonel in the Japanese Army. If the game was going for political correctness than it should not have been set at the turn of the 19th century.

Technically speaking the game lacks depth. The spells are repetitive and boring and weapons and armor seem to have taken a back seat in order for game designers to develop their skills in useless scripting . If you're simply looking for something to do to kill time, and have no interest immersing yourself in a virtual environment with a good plot, then this is the game for you. This game is yet another unfortunate example of the PS2 not being used to it's full potential.

Good game with a fantastic storyline

A different kind of game - one that actually has a good story. I picked this game up on the recommendation of a friend and was she ever right! The game is great. While it took a bit to get used to the interface I was impressed by the overall storyline.

While the graphics are good it's the story that's really is the high point of the game. It takes place in the Victorian era - one with magic and evil plots and heroes. It really is an interesting twist on the fantasy RPG and that's what helped me through the game.

The graphics are good, not great but good. They were enough to keep me entertained without boring me or slowing down the action. The only negative points I can say about the game are that it really isn't for younger kids - there are few overly violent/graphic images that may bother them. The other bad point is I needed to download a walk through for some of the more difficult strategies.

Oldie, but a goodie.

The Shadow Hearts series, unlike the Final Fantasy series, doesn't get very much recognition. There have been 3 SHs and they have only grown better with each one. SH 1 is the worst one out of trilogy, but it's not saying it's bad in any way. I figure the more games they release, the better they get (a special exemption to DMC, DMC 2 was horrific). This one follows out main protaginist Yuri on an adventure, he didnt even know he was going to embark on. Albert Smith is the main antagonist in the game, both being a "Demon Shifter", and after they meet...the fun begins!

This is a definite buy, although, it can get pricy somtimes.

Also try: Shadow Hearts 2 (If you've beat this one) or Shadow Hearts 3 (It's totally different)

An ecellent game with romance, fihting, violence. Best

Shadow hearts is an excellent video game that puts together love, romance, fighting, blood and hell. You begin as a man named Yuri and he is just seekin out a beutiful girl becasue a voice in his said told him too. It aint because he is crazy he is actually connected with the dead and goes to the hells graveyard frequently to obtain a new transformation or to leave it.... It is an excellent game full of sacrifice for a loved one. I garrente you will love this game!!!! ~Gatlin~

As recommended(by some-one else) I played Shadow Hearts 2 first. Shadow hearts would have been a lot tougher without knowledge obtained from the second game. Using the rings for battle was a little tough at first, but i caught on and had a lot of fun with the game. I liked the story line and the characters are bekievanle. Some of the puzzels are tough. Over-all, idin't want to put the game down. Its like a good book, that you just couldn't put down.( at the young age of 69, I find most good RPG'S are like that). I would reccomend The Shadow Hearts series to anyone who plays RPG's. RPG GRAMPS. I'm just starting Shadow Hearts 3.

one of the best RPG games I've played

Let me tell you if your looking for a real good RPG game you should pick up this game. The story line is great. It is pretty long and has alot of talking but that is just to tell you what's happening. The battle mode is excellent. Instead of just attacking the enemy by selecting attack you have to complete the judgement ring in order to determine if you attack 1, 2, or 3 times. The bosses are real tough. So if you like real good RPG's you should get this game.

Amazing game

This game has everything you can ask for. Its an imaginative thriller rpg with twists on every turn. This is one of the finest games ive ever played in my entire life. The battle system is very original and gives the game some actual skill rather then just using strategy in the tough battles. The story. All i can say is wow. This is a completely different story then any ive seen before. Nothing like final fantasy. it is very original. The weapons system is not in depth, but it does have a little with the acupuncture. For anyone who gave this game below a rating of 4 is not a fan of rpg's. This is one of my favorite games of all time. I recommend it to anyone who likes rpgs or has an interest in them.

Decent, for what it is

This is a fairly good game. It is not a great game, nor a terrible game, but simply a decent game. It fails where so many do, in the gameplay. The story is interesting enough, the characters fairly deep, but the combat is, as is all turn-based combat, a crime against gaming. If you like Final Fantasy games, and are looking for something a bit darker, then you will love this game. If you liked Morrowind, Oblivion, or Kingdom Hearts, you may find this game acceptable, as I did. Worth a try, but don't expect a life-changing experience.
