Groundbreaking at the time, still a stunner.

This game really set a standard for head-to-head and group slugfests online, along with Quake. The graphics were top-notch and were greatly enhanced if you scored a co-processing graphics card (remember those?), and gameplay was something else.

Skipping the nostalgia for a moment, I'll outline the basic premise. You shoot stuff, and rescue hostages. That's about it, and it lacks subtelty in description because gameplay is equally blunt. The weapons are the main character here: bombs that will wipe you out, invisibility defenses that let you sneak up on enemies, mines that will follow targets around corners when triggered, and a gun that can only be described as a fully-automatic rail gun.

The levels are, without qualification, individual works of art. The designers (and the many free add-on levels you can download) are simply incredible, and depending on your particular strengths, you can always find a level to compete (although the level of competition can be extremely high).

If you play this game straight-through as one-player, you may tire of the big boss endings, and it does get ridiculously difficuly two-thirds of the way in. Still, if you manage it the game is a visual stunner and six degrees of freedom is something to behold.

If you have the nerve to fight a human opponent, you should still find plenty of takers for your challenge. Be warned, cheaters exist (albeit less in the broadband-for-all era) and if you suspect your game is rigged, you can always find another one.

From the moment I first saw the sun & heard the music in the pre-game movie, I was absolutely hooked. This sequel is INFINITELY better than the first Descent (which I also loved) and the new weapons & powerups are devastating. If you have any knowledge of this type of game at all, you will NOT regret getting this! It's got to be the most incredible game ever made!

One word of warning, however: If you think you can ace this, THINK AGAIN! I had long months of practicing with cheat codes before I could even think about attempting to do the whole run ... my advice is to get Descent I first, do that, and then get this (it'll still be challenging, I promise you!) Also, if you expect to get all the answers about the invasion, your'e wrong. I'm not going to tell you a lot, but after seeing the end-movie you will DEFINITELY want to get Descent 3!

A fast, 3D, action experience!

If you want a fast, suspenseful game, this is one is for you! Some battles will have you spinning and turning not knowing which way is up. Courage is needed to enter Descent II! I also haven't encoutered any bugs at all!

One of THE Best Computer Games!

When I first heard of Descent, I was immediately hooked. I loved the special efects, the weapons, and the huge levels. Then they made Descent 2. I got it immediately. With 30, gut-wrenching, vertigo-inducing, robot-thrashing, and mine-destroying levels, and 10 new weapons, with the original 10, made this an awesome sequel. From the laser to the earthshaker missile, from the harmless guide bot to the menacing theif bot, this game is DA BOMB! I highly recommend this game to any computer game player. An A++++++++++++++ Game!!

OK, I must say, even though this isn't the most complex game on the market these days, i still LOVE Descent 1 & Descent 2! They're 2 of my favorite "older" video games!!!

When they first hit the scene, they were quite the games!

Even today, these games offer a unique 3D experience!

While the Descent games are not the easiest to master (with the control pad), once you master the controls, these games are SERIOUS FUN!!!!

Basically, you're "MATERIAL DEFENDER"! The roughest, toughest space-ship flyer in the galaxy! Your job: To fly thru TONS of underground mines, and irradicate all the mean-eerie-inhabitant-mining-robots that exist in the mines.

Graphics are outrageous, cool enemy robots, vibrant colors, gameplay is totally cool, each level is so eerie & spooky, you're offered a miriad of awesome laser weapons & awesome missles, tons of power-up's, killer soundtrack (Featuring Type-O-Negative, Skinny Puppy, and a few other killer bands), and gameplay that will leave your head spinning! Your spaceship can rotate EVERY direction imaginable! Which can sometimes leave you not knowing which way "UP" or "DOWN" is.....Like I said, it can be real confusing at first, but once you master the flight controls, you will have some OUTRAGEOUS FUN!!!!!

Some of the mines & levels in this game, are some of the coolest levels I've seen in a game like this!

Cool storyline in this game, as well! Which leads me to the ONLY "CON" of the game:

There's no DESCENT 3 for the PS console!!!!!!

HELLO! HINT, HINT, HINT!!!!!
I hope you "Descent Designers" are reading this!!!!!!!!!!

I wanna know what happens to "Material Defender" dammit!

Well what can I say, Descent 2 is one of the greatest games to ever come out on ANY system. If the vicious soundtrack doesn't grip you, the mindless and non-stop action surely will. Perfect in almost every single aspect, this game is a must-get for any gamer.

Puissance unmatched.

A myriad of new and old weapons, including the ability to perceive three dimensions at once, will help you outwit new robots and rid the galaxy of it's alien, robotic, evil seed ...'til Descent III that is.

I played this game ages ago when my system was nothing more than 120 MG's at the cpu level. Windows '95 baby. Now that NT rules the land it's hard to get this one running. I've got the win-95 compatiblity set, now for the joystick. I'm reluctant to say that new-age joysticks don't seem to work for this phat-tastic game. I'll have to ascertain my new system's ability to interface with my old joystick, the Gravis Phoenix, which I used to pummel robots into the cavernous walls of depthly heaven so long ago.

If you don't have this game it goes without typing, that you're missing out. All the other reviews here agree with me. But few recognize all aspects of it. Music being one I favor highly.

Again another issue I have yet is the redbook tracks won't play on my NT. So i've ripped them to mp3 and will play them through winamp with toggles set onto my keyboard for play/pause, backtrack, etc.

A gamer most likely has this game already, a nOOb probably doesn't. If you're looking for historic gaming FUN, this is game is no downer. And I'm not even a 'Descent part 1' player. That one I never owned...but this one is no different than it's predecessor.

Only set-up issues can frustrate a plyer of this game. Once it's up, you're out gunning, floating, hiding, spiraling, twisting, shafting, and owning in a way never matched since.

Now here's a great game

This is one of my fav first person shooters ever. If you've ever played Descent, imagine Descent x4, and you get Descent 2. I even liked it much better than D3! But lets get to good/bad stuff:

I say you buy this bloody game JUST for the music! The songs kick so much butt, and you can play them in a cd player! It's got stuff from Ogre of Skinny Puppy, and Type O Negative. I have this to say, though: I think Skinny Puppy bites, even though the song he does on the soundtrack is cool, and I don't know which song Type O Negative does on the soundtrack, as none of the songs have Peter's trademark, strong, sensual voice. In fact, the soundtrack was what got me started on Type O Negative, even though the soundtrack is a mix of mostly heavymetal/techno.

My only complaint is it's too HARD, and the graphics aren't much better than Descent 1, but neither of those facts are of any consequence, aside from the detraction of 1 star. Nonetheless, I still think its a great game, because it is. God, the soundtrack!

Blast from the Past!

I haven't played Descent 2 in years, and the first game was one of my favorites back in the day. The beauty of Descent 2 is in how much community support the game has. You can still play this title on modern machines due to the patches and upgrades available. Yes, the graphics are still old looking, but the gameplay is top notch, way better than the third game in the series. Please note this is the 'regular' version of the game, and does not include extra levels or features.
