... what went wrong!

Ive been looking forward to this game for about 6 months and finially I found it in store. Unfortuantely, that store wont let me return it!

The AI is shocking, the camera controls are next to impossible to use at any descent speed, and I cant get the game to run for more than 10 minutes without a crash to desktop. If you dont believe me, check out the gamespot review below...it sums up my feelings pretty well.

Very dissapointed :-(

To many people wont give it a chance!

When I first put this game in I was overwhelmed by the amount of detail and involvement it makes you undertake and I was ready to blow it off as an overly challenging hardcore wargame, but I played through for an hour and became hooked right in! The freedom is the best part, being either a Nazi or a Ranger and being able to create your own combat scenario. I bought this game on the first day of my Vacation so I would have somthing to play but I think it will take a little longer than my four days. I dont give it 5 stars because of the clunky mouse and keyboard controls, although the birds eye view of the whole battle makes it much better I find it hard to locate and pinpoint individual units and firefights, I played almost all of the close combat games and did not like any of them as much as this, I think this is better because of the Graphics, which look clear and well placed. Overall this game is excellent for a hardcore strategy wargamer, but if you dont have alot of time on your hands you wont enjoy it.

Good, yet not the best RTS game on the market

I have been looking forward to this game for a long time, which might make me an impartial judge. I do not entirely agree with the GameSpot review, but i do not dissagree with it. I was impressed with the campagin editor, which unlike othergames like Warcraft III is easy to use, and most maps can be used. 20+ levels is nice too. Yet the menu's are very ugly and dark. I was impressed with the graphics, the only up-side of this game, the people and animations are very nicely done, yet slow, but if the developers had spent a couple of hours on trees and background terrain the game might have been saved. Another thing that i was upset with was the camera. It's impossible to use. The AI of the game is sub-par. It's one of those, "choose your soldiers then throw them at the other person with no strategy in mind," kind of games," like, "Empire Earth" which atleast had the fact that buildings could be made. Something that got me mad at the game is that people move extremely slowly, and if they run they get shot. The only way soldiers can move without getting shot is crawling at an un-realisticly slow rate. In battles it's impossible to tell who is getting shot, and who is shooting them. This may reflect real war, but units, and sometimes whole groups dissappear off the map, then re-appear half emerged from the floorboards of a house...

A Vastly Underrated game, you'll be pleasantly surprised

I was in a electronics store one day and I was in the PC game section. I do most of my gaming on a console, so was a rare instance, purchasing a PC game. I came across this game G.I. Combat. I cashed out and went home to play it. I have to say that while not "great" this game was a pleasant surprise.

G.I. Combat is what you'd probably call a "real time" strategy game. However the main focus of the game is the action of the battlefield. No wasthing time buliding units, managing resources, maintaining supply lines or what have you. You are the General and the troops are yours to command. This for me was refreshing. I come from the George Carlin school of video gaming.
George said once during one of his football diatribes "Put a helmet on, go out there and hurt somebody!". Clear and straight to the point. That's what G.I. Combat is.

The control scheme takes some getting used to. You'll need quite a while to familiarize yourself with the camera movements as well. Manuevering the camera can also be a little tricky too. A few people have complained about the tank movements but there is a 1.04 patch that takes care of that problem along with several others. The game is however a constant challenge in terms of getting the units coordinated to support each other.

Those are the downsides. On the upside, this is one of the few RTS games that's rendered completely in 3D. Rather than an isometric view, the action takes places in a 360 degree perspective. Which is rare for RTS games. That's one of the major drawing points for me.

But the one thing for me that makes this game stand out is that it is very, VERY mod friendly. There are quite a few excellent mods in existance that are easy to install and look great. From uniforms to completely new German, American and British Units, this game is alot of fun to modify. A quick internet search will reveal a number of mods out there ready for download and instalation.

If you find this game at your store or even in the bargain bin, give it a shot. Once you learn the in's and out's you won't be sorry. I know I wasn't. Currently there is another game called Squad Assault in the works which utilizes this G.I. Combat game engine, which promises to be bigger and more polished. I have to admit this is one of the few times I'm looking forward to a PC game's release.

This game rocks!

This game, is the hard core strategy game that strategy gamers are looking for. Enter a realistic world, choose your troops, and call upon naval, artillery, and air support. Not only will you have to deal with the placement and orders of your troops, you will also have to survive with death, injury, and even soldiers being scared! Ammunition may run out, your tanks may explode, yet, you must strive on. This game should be on the top of every of every gamer's list. So, give it a try! I love it, will you?

This game came highly recommended, and had an admirable pedigree. However, the resulting Close Combat offspring just proves two intellects don't make a genius. In fact, this child is simply dull. The squads are awkward to command, and don't have any sense of a.i. The constant need to toggle perspectives adds to the confusion, and ultimately is so distracting the objective becomes muddled. I tried very hard to like this game, and the only saving grace is I bought on sale for under $20. The salesperson told me they predicted they would have a hard time giving it away, to which I chuckled thinking they must have made a mistake. Well, I can't give my copy away to any of my friends. The original close combat series is as good as it gets. Don't waste your $$$ on this dogchild.

60+ hours of game time

GIC is set in the French Normandy Countryside and has 20+ maps to test out your skills and lead up to 20 squads (120 men) to victory. At first glance the game does jump out at you with the wow factor but after hitting start it's a real eye opener. Excellent animation's best to date that I have seen in a strategy game or war game just fantastic! Troops have a nice moral system. Sound is good; I cringe hearing some of the screams of pain and fear. This has to be one of the most impressive multiplayer strategy game's to date too. This game is MOD friendly too; many custom maps and campaigns are in the works at the game site forums.
Negatives: You will need to allow some time to get used to the interface and controls, a bit confusing at first, but after a few games it's easy. Maps only are one size at this time, but offer enough room to flank the enemy with your numerous vehicles. The AI can get confused at times, but not a game killer. If you are looking for Doom graphics this is not a game for you, this is not a FPS.

Great multiplayer, Mod friendly, animations, developer support and the fun factor makes this game a winner in my book! 8/10 version 1.01 and the tree mod. Hope this helps.
