The greatest role-playing game.....Ever!!!!

Your name is Gordan Freeman. You have a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from MIT. You are well acquainted with classical physics, relativity and quantum mechanics. You presently work at a top-secret research compound in New Mexico called the Black Mesa Research Lab. However, this is not going to be just another typical day at the office. It will be a period that will test you in ways that your education at MIT did not prepare you for...

You are involved in an experiment that goes awry (to put it mildly). A dimensional portal opens up and all of these mean & nasty aliens have slipped thru (they get meaner and nastier as the game goes on). You try to escape the compound, picking up a variety of weapons to defend yourself as you go along. The weapons include: a crowbar (also good for opening up boxes of supplies), a pistol, a 44 Magnum (very cool), a shotgun, an automatic machine gun w/a grenade launcher, hand grenades + some experimental weapons (being researched in various levels of the lab) and other stuff. You will need them all for the task that awaits you.

However, the story does not end there. At the third scenario, Marine Recon shows up. The scientists all think that they are there to rescue them. Wrong. the Marines are actually there to eliminate ALL evidence that anything ever happened, which means they are to whack both the aliens as well as the scientists. So now you have to fight your way thru heavily armed Marines as well as violence-prone aliens who really, really seem to dislike you.

One of the nice things about this game, however, is that not everyone is against you. From time to time you come across scientists & security guards who are on your side & you can ask for (and receive) their assistance to help you thru tough spots. The plot to the game itself is quite good, too, about as elaborate as you're ever going to find in a role-playing game. I understand that one of the writers for the game is actually an author of horror novels. Way cool!

You can also play the game on-line. While playing the multi-player mode via the Internet has precious little to do w/the actual CD game, it is addictive nonetheless. Some scenarios are free-for-alls where you run around picking up weapons & shooting at anything (and everything) that moves. Other websites let you play on teams; it's capture-the-flag with hand grenades & flame throwers (my favorite!).

I would not recommend this game for everyone, tho. I would advise against getting this game for children. It is certainly the most obnoxious game I have ever played. It has more action and gore than most horror & action films. The 3D accelerated graphics make it seem all too real, from the mangled body parts to the blood (human and alien) that is smeared all over the walls and floors. I would also admonish people who suffer from claustrophobia or vertigo to think twice about buying this game. There are many times that you have to go thru tiny crawl spaces (such as ventilator shafts) and have to work from in high places (many times falling a time or two until you learn how to get thru them). Also in the game are many places where you must traverse areas laden with toxic sludge as well as machines that will smash you to bits if your timing isn't right. Definitely not for the feint of heart.

But, if you enjoy top-notch action games that are not short on plot and violence, this game is for you. You get to be a theoretical physicist who is every Green Beret's worst nightmare. Richard P. Feynman would have loved this game!!!

Half-life...slow and dull

This game bills itself as an action game...well good luck finding any action. I hope you enjoy finding your way around mazes, searching for buttons, climbing insanely long (and easy to fall off) ladders, and fighting the ugre to simply turn this garbage off and delete it from your system.

One of the most stuctured shoot-em ups I've ever seen.

I have to say that even a long time after it's release, this game still keeps me entertained. The graphics are great, the atmosphere is amazing, the AI is incredible! Altogether one excellent game. There are loads of different puzzles, and there isn't any faffing around with end of level bosses.

There are few downpoints though, even in a game of this standard. The direct x graphics mode is terrible, and the open GL is not compatible with my card, even though open GL works fine with my card in other games. More general pitfalls are that it takes time to get going - there's no way to skip the intro which isn't that relevant to what's going on anyway. The first few levels provide little entertainment. 3/4 of the way through, you get thrown into some alien planet, which almost stops the game dead. It sometimes feels a bit linear as well.

However, enough moans coz the good outwieghs the bad by a long shot. This contains all the elements that SiN should've had.

Can't......................stop....................playing

The premise is pretty fun. You are a 27 year-old physicist employed in a huge government complex. An experiment goes awry and alien creatures from another dimension are constantly materializing in the complex. Soon the facility is taken over by the military, who is actively seeking you out. Now you have two types of enemy to contend with!

Half-life allows you an extra dimension of stategy over Quake 2 in planning many attacks. You may recuit security guards in your assaults. The guards make funny comments like "I can REALLY use a cold one right now.". Your other type of ally is a fellow scientist. Scientists won't cover you in an assault but may boost your health and provide access to parts of the complex. The guards and the scientists often have pseudo-converstions with each other. These can be very funny and relieve tension.

The monsters you are fighting are more varied and alien than the foes in Quake 2. You will have some puzzles to solve (another advantage over Quake 2). These puzzles are simpler and not as frustrating as the puzzles of the tombraider series.

The gameplay is pretty addictive. After you are finished with one level you want to continue immediately rather than rest up a bit.

I have found using a joystick or some other game controller is helpful and more fun.

Absoulutly incredable. Everything was approched in this game; sound, stratagy, lighting, level design, and graphics. It is darn good stuff. Also, the counterstrike mod is enough of a reason to buy it. This game definatly deserves game of the year. Well done Sierra!

Me and my dad play this game together but I never got into playing 1 player by myself. I downloaded Team Fortress Classic, and this game is instantly transformed in to THE GR8TEST GAME OF ALL. TFC is the best multiplayer MOD ever! You get to duke it out while being a medic, soldier, sniper, Heavy Weapons guy, Demolition man, and a SPY! I have never seen another game so addictive and innovative. I would buy this game just for Mutltiplayer! You should buy this game, this game makes you proud to own. The story so cool, the fragging so great! All the reviews are true this is the GAME OF THE YEAR but I think this is the GAME OF THE CENTURY.

The EPITOME of the modern FPS

The first time I heard this game was in an editorial around 1996 when the guys at Lucasarts were about to release Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, and they said, "...I hope it matches up to upcoming FPS games such as Sin and Half-Life." Those weren't the exact words, but for sure they were kept in my mind. I remembered buying Jedi Knight DF2 and thinking it to be the best damned game on earth. A year or so later, the new team of developers cracked out their year-delayed game and prayed. Valve boasted incredibly advanced AI, immersive levels including an alien planet, marines; the suspense thriller many a gamer would love. And what love this game would get for the days following its release. Game of the Year in 40+ publishings (about there) and showing big numbers in sales records, this game is worth your hard earned dollars. What a ride this game gave me. They released the Game of the Year Edition containing the best mod I have ever played, Team Fortress Classic (a modification following up on Quake's Team Fortress). While you're waiting for the sequel, grab one of these off the shelves and spread the word to the outer limits. A game like this only comes like a shooting star, so catch it while you can.

Even if you are not into the whole first person shooter genre you'll love half life. The graphics, gameplay, story, weapons and everything else (oh yes there is alot more) are pumped to the max. If you are considering buying Half Life go for it and have a good time.

Think about buying the game?

Don't hesitate. I read most of the reviews. Not sure, but I guess that the following information will help people who are hesitating.... First, the game runs without a 3D card also and it's nice. I have a P233 MMX with 32MB ram and it's fine. This done, the one player game is perfect. You have a large array of weapons at your disposal, and you interact with the scenery in many ways. But apart the good scenario, what's incredible is the situations you get to face. The levels are very well designed and you never feel like you are doing the same thing over again just rushing for the end. On the contrary...What's more, the ennemies are intelligent (for a change)you interact with several characters (instead of being all alone all the time) and you really get to FIGHT! It took me 1 week to complete the game. Too short? I spent 5-7 hours per day on the game. I took my time too. The game is so enjoyable.

The multiplayer is good too, and you can create your own maps or download some more on the net.

A strategic and action game that makes you feel like watching a movie...where you decide of the action.

Best Game Ever
