A classic western game.

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 17 / 19

Author: Amazon User

Ever since getting into gaming, I have noticed the growing trend of the 1st person shooter genre, the trend set by those wonderfull guys at ID software. Ever since Doom, each new game seems to be related to it somehow, all of them set in space or in the future, having you battle it out with hell spawn, or outlandish aliens. With weapons consisting of nothing more then hyper blasters and rocket launchers. I got sick of this overdone theme fast and longed for a 1st person shooter with a story, one that captured me and consisted of more then just blowing up crap.

Then came Outlaws, a diamond in the rough, a hidden gem amongst the piles of other games that seemed to have everyones attention. Outlaws plays out like a classic spaghetti western. It consists of a wonderfull story that tells itself through handdrawn cutscenes and ingame action. You are a US Marshal, who has retired, but while away in town, outlaws set on vengence, kill your wife and kidnap your daughter, making your retirement shortlived.

This game was originaly released in late 1996 and met with mixed reviews, most were to caught up in the phenomena known as Quake to pay it any mind but for those that did not, boy did they miss out. The graphics are superb for it's time, and the music is out of this world. The weapons are simple, real world weapons from the times of Jesse James and Billy the Kid. You can't shoot forever and you actually have to reload. This game takes skill and stealth. I have played through the single play mode countless times enjoying it more and more each time.

After you are done with single player make sure to take advantage of the wonderfull multi-player modes. Outlaws plays well online with a 28.8 modem and is supported on Microsoft's, zone.com. It also is a great game for any lan party or the network at work. It is easy to start up and easy to play. There are many different modes to try, deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, and an original game called kill the fool with the chicken. It also developed a pretty big on-line community with many new custom maps always being created leading to endless replayability. Outlaws also has customizable taunt files you can bind to the f-keys. This realy adds to the game enabling you to yell out insults to your oponents. You can even record or import your own voice or clips from movies or what ever you can think of.

All and all this game is a must have for any gamer who even hints at liking western movies. You can't beat the price for what you get. Don't pass this up, truly one of the greatest PC games ever made.

Wonderful Old Game...

This is a wonderful game, even after a few years of playing it it dosen't get old, the graphics may be old and only sorta 3D-ish, but the game never fails to give you a good time, the story is well amde and the game holds it up. Once your finished with the Single Player portion, On to the Multiplayer! a great wonderful and nice group or rather community of people play outlaws online. ages ranging from the very young (6yrs) to the rather elderly I've known someone who was about 65 and still to this day plays the game. Whats even better is the vast assortment of multiplayer levels available for playing online with other people ranging from deathmatches, to capture the flag, kill the fool with the chicken and a few more. The graphics may be old, and the game maybe old, but the game itself is a classic. So buy this game! It's certainly worth the 10 bucks if not more. And I'll see ya out in the world of multiplayer gaming, maybe you'll play a few multiplayer levels I've built for the game, or maybe you'll design your own, if anything enjoy the game for what it is, an old one.

But I assure you. It's worth it's weight in gold.

Dated, but really fun

I'll start by saying that this game is really dated. If I'd written this review 3 years ago, I'd have given the game 5 stars.

I liked the game so much for several reasons. First, it is one of the few old west games on the market - a genre that I think is far underutilized in the gaming industry.

Second, the story is quite good. The opening cinematic is done cartoon-style, and so holds up well even today. The opening is quite long, and does a lot to get the player involved, and set a dark mood for the game.

Third, this game has a more realistic damage system than most (but not all) other 1st person shooters on the market. Your character isn't armored to the hilt, and so one or two well-placed shots will likely take him out.

Overall, if you don't mind the graphics this is a darned good game. As I always say - the play's the thing!

No words can correctly describe Outlaws. Here goes....

*****WARNING: OUTLAWS IS ADDICTIVE!***** (thanks, Gojo)

One of the Best in the gaming Industry. Even After 2 years of being Printed!

The Best ''First-Person shooter''out there. If you have a Joystick, Gamepad, or even the old Mouse and Keyboard, whatever, this game works.

You are Marshal James Anderson former Lawman current retired and hard working Farmer. Your wife is killed and only child kidnapped. Nothing to loose your heart seeks revenge. With classic cut-scenes that tell the story, and many hours of assuring gameplay, Outlaws can't be beat. With three Different difficulty settings available: The Good, Bad, and The Ugly. These three modes are challenging.

Good: starting off with plenty of health and ammo lyin' around, who couldn't win?

Bad: Less Health and ammo to stumble across, and badguys are more aggressive and take more shots to kill.

The UGLY: the ugly got it's name. Few ammo and Health to get. Better use you're ammo sparingly and shoot quick these Badguys aim ta kill!

With three modes like Spaghetti Western(The game), Bounty hunter(earlier life of Marshal James Anderson), and Multiplayer Shoot-outs(online). Historical Missions(Bounty Hunter): The earlier life of the Marshal, with many challenging levels to complete. Multiplayer Capture the Flag, Team Play, and Kill the Fool with the Chicken, are some of the various settings online.

Don't mean ta babble on like this but I hope this Helped!

Buy this game. I personally guarantee that it won't be a letdown. Thanks fer listenin.

*Tune in next time.......*

This is by far "THE BEST VIDEO GAME EVER MADE". I bought it in 1997 and still love to play and design new levels for it today in 2000. I cannot understand why Lucas Arts refuses to make a sequel to this game. It has almost a cult following on the web. There are many Outlaws websites and fans all over the world. You can play the Main Game (which is a great story), or you can go bounty hunting in the Historical Missions, or you can play against real live opponents or friends over the internet or modem. You can also download a level editor called LawMaker from the internet and create your own levels, which is almost as fun as playing the game. The game is easy to use, has some nice configuration options, and never crashes. Sure it is not flashy, sophisticated, or futuristic, but that is what makes it so great. If you want to have some good old fashioned fun, buy and play Outlaws.

P.S. Wake up Lucas Arts and make a sequel to Outlaws instead of all of the Star Wars crap.

The new sheriff in town

Outlaws was released in 1996, and was one of the last 1st-person shooters to retain a sprite-based game engine over a true 3D polygonal one. It's also one of the few western-based shooting games on the market.

You're Marshall James Anderson, a former lawman who takes up the badge again when a railroad baron's goons kill your wife and kidnap your daughter. You'll fight through nine stages, including ghost towns, mines, cliff dwellings, and saw mills on your quest for revenge. Bonus missions send you on bounty-hunting quests for those thugs you never saw during the main game. Lucasarts really nailed the spaghetti western atmosphere and trappings with lots of animated cutscenes and excellent voice work. You can also pop the game CDs into your CD player and hear the highly memorable full-length soundtrack.

But there are problems with Outlaws' gameplay. The environments are still pretty decent, but the enemy sprites were average by 1996 standards, and look pretty bad today. Some of the levels can be disorienting and confusing, and the missions fall into key hunts that aren't much better than the original DOOM. There's really no sense of direction except to run around and open passages until you meet the boss. Bosses aren't as distinctive as in other games, and you might not know you've killed one until the game jumps to a cutscene. To its credit, Outlaws included elements that later became staples of the shooter genre, including having to manually reload (bullet by bullet!), a sniper rifle, and a stamina meter where your character becomes slower and out of breath the longer you run.

I can't say there's much reason to buy this title today if you've been raised on shooters like Half-Life and Halo, but if you're a collector of Lucasarts games and want to experience the high-quality cutscenes and soundtrack, Outlaws is a must-have.

One of the Greatest Games of All Time!!!!!!!!!!

My friend and I played this game when it originally came out and we were blown away by the brilliant story, amazing cutsecenes, and tremedous gameplay. I was at my friends house and we found it in his garage. We had't played this game in around 8 years! We popped it into his computer and we brought back to the good old days when graphics weren't the only important thing about games. This is the best western video game. I hope you enjoy it as much as my friend and I did.

Outlaws is a first person shooter set in the wild west. The story line is you play the hero and have to rescue your daughter from the villan. Built on a dated engine with wonky physics, Dated graphics and a 2.5D design. Very dull gameplay with no atmosphere and a box of rocks AI. Gameplay is nothing but shoot the baddies, Find key, Open door, Shoot more baddies, Find another Key ect ect. Outlaws is very dissapointing.
