Not just vanilla BF2 with a few gimmicks

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 6 / 8

Special Forces turned out to be a great addition to the game. The ranked server system in BF2 provides the developers with vast information about how the game is being played. They have hordes of statistical data available to them on what is popular (and effective) and what isn't. And it shows!

Special Forces very specifically focuses on the kinds of elements that are most popular in vanilla BF2. Most particularly infantry combat.

You don't have to spend your time butting heads with your buddies about who will drive the tank in this one. You've go pleanty to do on foot. Vehicles become the spice rather than the must have.

It's really not just more of the same thing you had with vanilla BF2. It's still the same basic core, but the flavor is different. It's like chocolate versus vanilla ice cream. They're both ice cream, but they do taste different.

And it's not because of the grappling hooks, zip lines, flash bangs, etc. Those are just gimmicks. They're fun, but they don't particularly alter the feel of the game. Rather, the different feel of SF is pervasive throughout the entire game. It's something a little more intangible than a couple of features. Everything about it... the weapons... the maps... has a different emphasis and purpose. It's like seeing the same world around you in a different light.

And it's oh so good. I actually prefer SF over the original BF2. But I still play both regularly.

Now... to address some of the comments made in other reviews here...

Yes, if you have SF, you will be able to bring some of the SF weapons into vanilla BF2 servers with you. No, these weapons are not better. They have a different flavor to them, but they're not actually better or worse than the other weapons. That's right, even the F2000 isn't an overpowered weapon. Lots of people think its obviously better than the other assault rifles, but imho the reality is that it's just more shiny. It's actual stats fall inbetween the other assault rifles.

When SF first came out, everyone was afraid flash bangs would totally ruin the vanilla BF2 experience. While I think their inclusion on vanilla servers was the most questionable move the developers made, it really had no such impact. For the first couple of weeks, of course, it was flash bang city. But when the novelty wore off, flash bang usage became fairly rare. I think people eventually realized that, had it been a real grenade, it would have killed the enemy outright rather than just blinding them temporarily.

Lastly, if you're only interested in jets, you definatley won't like SF. There are no air craft in any of the SF maps. The air craft in vanilla BF2 are overpowered in terms of game balance and tend to overwhelm the game... life without them is grand, imho. The new helos are a blast, though.

Imho, if you like BF2, you really have to get SF. Not because you _have_ to, but because it's just too much fun to pass up.

Can your computer handle it soldier?

First off this is the BEST first person shooter game on the market right now. I have a computer with 2gigs of low latency ram and a rocking $600.00 512mb graphics card and my machine still gets very hot, hot, hot. It runs perfectly on my machine and is one of the funnest games I have to date. The minimum requirements of this game to run are a joke you will HATE it because it will be very crashy. I recommend at least 1 gig of ram and a 256 video card and no less than 2.0 on your processor.

I was reluctant to purchase BF2:Special Forces because it seemed to me that the creators could just put out a series of 'booster packs' and expansions and continually charge me for a game that I had already purchased (plain old BF2).

Having had it for a while now I have come full circle. Not only does it add interesting new weapons and vehicles but it comes with a new (and very fun) set of maps.

On top of that, the people behind the game continue to put a lot of effort into supporting the game with patches (as needed) and improvements.

They also seem to have done an excellent job in balancing playability with realism. If you want a modern FPS and prefer either realism or just fun, this game has both.

A worthwhile purchase imho.

BF2: Special Forces is an incredible expansion for an incredible game. Many people post reviews saying the nighttime mode is bad. Lies. Night maps are just as fun. They take some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, they're awesome. Some people complain of loading times and lag. Well, duh, if your computer sucks, the game will suck.

Basically, if your PC is 3GHz+, buy this game.

If you like Battlefield 2 this game is a must have addition. Besides the 6 new maps, including the very populated map "Ghost Town", it is a weapon & career accelerator. For each 2nd tier unlock you have, you will receive a 3rd tier weapon-unlock. Choose wisely and resist loading game too early as i can't say for certain you get extra unlocks in the future.

I loaded just after 5000 score and 4 unlocks and received 4 additional unlocks. It will be few weeks before my next unlock. I personally believe I'll get extra when I hit 8000 but the net is split on this issue.

The other expansion - Euro Pack only makes sense if loaded right after Special Forces because ..........It only gives two unlocks which are specific. Snipper and I forget the other. Use the combo
correctly for max effect and it's lock & load - Rock & Roll, you've got the WORKS even though your still a noob (new be) !

SIDE NOTE: BF2 has years to go and you'll want these extra weapons. There are massive high quality MODS approved by EA. including single player-COOP- and regular Multi, all free on the Net.

I have been around FPS games for 7 years now. The idea of expansion packs sets PC games apart from console games. In BF1942 there was only one good expansion pack as I saw it. In Road to Rome BF1942 was expanded upon in a natural progresion. It made sence and the gameplay was helped along by adding new armies, vehicles and maps. But it was not a real departure from vanilla BF1942. When Secret Weapons was released al it did was add lame jets and jet packs. GIMICK!!!!!.

So in my opinion the special forces expansion pack for BF2 is much like Road to Rome for BF1942. It is not way out and is a natural progression for BF2 to follow. There is no "experemental" junk for anyone to argue about and it is very realistic.

Overall the Special Forces expansion pack is very good and due to patching and fixes it will only get better. Go buy it and if you dont like it then complain. If you havent bought it and complain you need to go lay down in the street adn practice getting run over.

Best Game Ever

The maps are huge. Team play is inovative. Run, walk, fly, drive and parachute your way into combat. Execute special mission to cripple enemy offense/defense behind enemy lines. planes, helicoters, boats, tanks, apc, and too many cars to lists. Experiance unlocks weapons. Team Work is a must in bf2. this game kicks ass.

A great addition to bf2. Alot of fun with loads of new maps, vehicles and weapons. New armies also make it a lot of fun expanding the bf2 universe. There are also a host of new medals, badges and ribbons to achieve.
