The best in Star Wars gaming just got better

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 77 / 89
Date: November 02, 2005
Author: Amazon User

Star Wars Battlefront II (2005.) The second game in the Star Wars Battlefront series.

INTRODUCTION:
In 2004, Star Wars Battlefront was released. Although not wildly popular at its time of release, the game gradually won many gamers over with its awesome gameplay. The deathmatch-style gaming in a galaxy far, far away ended up becoming the best-selling Star Wars game of all time! Still, while it was one of the best Star Wars games ever, it did lack in a few areas, and it left fans yearning for a sequel. One finally arrived in the Fall of 2005! Is it an improvement? Read on for my review of Star Wars Battlefront II.

OVERVIEW:
Star Wars Battlefront II was released in America on November 1, 2005 - the same day Episode III was released on DVD in the United States. The game features single player and multi-man action alike. There are a ton of different characters, classes, locales, and game variants. The game is available for Playstation 2, Playstation Portable, XBOX, and PC.

REVIEW:
I had high expectations for this game, being that the first Battlefront was one of my all-time favorite Star Wars gaming experiences. The sequel takes this already-excellent formula, and makes it even better in a number of ways! Let's see how it fares.

-THE GOOD:

-THE GAMEPLAY THAT MADE THE ORIGINAL BATTLEFRONT SUCH A GREAT GAME MAKES A COMEBACK HERE. The original game was a Star Wars fan favorite, and I'm not at all surprised that the basic gameplay concepts, for the most part, remain unchanged in most modes of play.

-THE STORY MODE HAS GOTTEN A REVAMP. Rather than just generic battles aroun the galaxy, it has become mission and objective-oriented. The alteration makes for a refreshing change of pace from the standard battle games.

-TONS OF NEW LOCATIONS TO TAKE THE FIGHT TO. The locales you'll explore in this game have greatly been expanded. Now, you can fight in a great deal more places than the first game. Episode III worlds like Utapau and Mustafar are now playable, as well as other classic Star Wars scenes like Dagobah and the interior of the Death Star.

-SPACE COMBAT! This is the thing the game is getting a lot of hype for. You can now do your battles in space! The sheer amount of options in such a battle makes these some of the funnest things the game offers. You can fly a starfighter and attack enemy ships from the outside, or land in their docks and cause destruction from the inside out (and maybe even steal an enemy fighter!) This is definitely one of the game's best features.

-JEDI/SITH CHARACTERS NOW PLAYABLE. Such characters were just "extras" on the battle scenes of the first Battlefront, but now they are playable! In your battles, sometimes you'll get an option to play as one if you fulfill certain objectives. Now a whole cast of them is available for play, and it definitely makes your fights more interesting.

-LOTS OF OTHER NEW STUFF. For instance, in some battles, you can earn points by killing foes, and my killing them and getting these points you can choose from other character classes that weren't available at the beginning of the battle. There are also tons of new vehicles, including many that premiered in Episode III.

-GRAPHICS ARE BETTER THAN EVER! If you thought the first Battlefront had great graphics, you haven't seen anything yet. This is about as good as a game of this type could possible look.

-THE BAD:

-THE OBJECTIVE-ORIENTED STORY MODE CAN BE FRUSTRATING. I myself would have preferred it if Story Mode has just kept the standard gameplay styings. However, I am NOT saying that this chance to the gameplay was all bad, it's just not what I was expecting in some ways.

-LEARNING CURVE IS STEEPER THAN MOST STAR WARS GAMES. The Battlefront series was obviously designed with PC gamers in mind father than the console crowd, so these games are a little harder to learn than the other Star Wars titles. Give the game some time before you reject it - you may end up liking it more than any other Star Wars game!

Overall, the sequel to the best-selling Star Wars game of all time is even better than its awesome-in-its-own-right predecessor. If you liked the first Battlefront, you're bound to like the second one even better. I give it my highest possible recommendation if you're a fan of Star Wars. Pick this one up. It may be a little hard to learn if you're new to this sort of thing, but ultimately, you should agree that this game rocks.

EDITION NOTES:
This game is a very recent release at the time I write this review. Accordingly, you really shouldn't have any problem hunting down a copy of it for yourself. Just about every place that sells video games should have plenty of new copies, just waiting to be sold.

Fun while it lasts

This game rocks. It's a big improvement over SWBF. There are more levels and yes, you get to fight as a Jedi. Pick among many including Luke, Yoda, Anikan, Darth Vader, and many more. Heres the lowdown:

Graphics: 5/5 These are excellent graphic for the PSP. The best I've ever seen so far. The picture is crystal clear and has a very high resolution. The movement of all the characters are very well done.

Sound: 4/5 The sound is good in this game and you get to hear all the ewoks, jawas, and the classic music, but the sound does skip here and there once in the while. Overall it's good.

Controls: 4/5 The controls are a bit clunky and repetitve at times. There is no second analog stick so its hard to move, but you move with the X, O, square, and triangle buttons as the second analog. It's kind of hard to get used to.

Fun: 3/5 Overall this game is really fun. You can fight as a Jedi like Vader, Luke, and Yoda. And yes, fight in space which is really fun. A bad thing is that it is like the first battlefront game. It gets repetitve really fast. This is a game that you can play here and there for like 5-10 min, but don't plan on playing this for long periods of time.

I have changed my mind about this game. I guess you truly do have to get used to the controls. And even then you have to reach a higher level. Then all of a sudden, the game opens up. There is the flight missions where enemies fly 1,000,000,000 miles an hour and your really cool ship flies about 2 miles an hour and slower when you are turning. Even the fastes ships fly about 4 miles an hour. No matter what the enemies are nothing but specs in the distance ... until they kill you. Picking off people from a distance never gets old. Taking over turrets is fun. Probably the best is using the jet paks or riding on the speederbikes. Taking over ground vehicles is kind of cool and the new and veried heroes are cool. The new mini-game missions are the same thing over and over again just like the main game. Boba Fett taking out nasty little Gungans and Jawas seems like fun and it is kind of.
Bottom Line: If you are the biggest starwars fan of all time ...buy this game. It will not disappoint if you stick with it. Is it for kids? No blood, but lots of killing. Will I keep it? Yes.

Frag on the Battlefront

Anyone who's a Star Wars junkie will tell you how they've imagined fighting as Darth Vader or Skywalker or Boba Fett would be. Pretty darn great. Star Wars Battlefront 2 not only allows you to do all that - albeit in a pretty short amount of time - but it gives you what the first game didn't. Space dogfights. And can I just say, Boo Ya?

In brief, the game is a blast - though not something you'll be playing all the time. It's a game you have to savor and then let rest for awhile so you won't get tired of it. Although it is a great game, it's repetitive. Shoot shoot shoot, die die die, upgrade, upgrade, upgrade, and after awhile, well, you feel like popping a different disc in. But when you're enjoying yourself and are really getting into it, it's an amazing game. The graphics are much better, though in online play, the same lag erupts like a bad dream. There are far more weapons and vehicles, and best of all, it doesn't take 3 minutes to traverse the landscape anymore.

As for the Jedi Heros coming into play, you can't pick say Darth and run around hacking off your enemies at will. During a point in the game, assuming youve accumulated enough points from killing people and being a hero, blah blah, you will get a prompt asking if you wish to play as the hero of that map. You pick yes, and you respawn as that hero. The only rule from here on now is, you gotta kill as many of the enemy as you can without getting hurt too much. Once you've taken too much damage, the hero will kneel out of the battle and you're back as one of the grunt Clone Troopers or whatever. This goes on until the battle is finished.

This is a great game that gives for lots of enjoyment until you get sick of fragging AI. Then you might want to hop online and frag. Which is fun...unless you tend to die alot. An upgrade from the first one in many ways. A good buy.

Really fun game

this is an awesome game, and there are a lot of pros and cons:

Pros:
-Gameplay is awesome, and you dont want to put it down
-Graphics are so good that they look like a console game
-Galactic conquest is as fun as ever. It's not too hard, but its not a breeze either. You can chose 4 armies: The droids, the old republic, the rebels, and the new republic. All armies have their pros and cons (my favorites are the droids) but it is fun no matter who you chose.

Cons:
-I was extremely dissipointed in the challenges mode. It's simply not fun. It is so simple that I felt like i was playing a gameboy color game.
-playable heroes are extremely overrated. All non jedi are just plain horrible, and although jedi aren't that bad, after i messed around with them a little bit, i decided that i would much rather be a basic droid

Overview:
This game is worth buying for sure(even if only for galactic conquest). I own nine games for psp, and this is my second favorite (behind madden 2006). Star Wars Battlefront is a great game and i strongly reccomend buying it.

...for this game, because I can't put it down! I had heard a lot about SWBFII, and finally got around to buying it. Originally, I was going to get it for PS2, but I've been buying a lot of games for PSP lately (I bought it over a year and a half ago and haven't until recently been using it all that much). I've never played STBFI, nor have I ever played the console version of SWBFII... I hear there are some differences regarding the number of maps... and apparently theres a story mode (I would have liked to have seen that). But some trimming is to be expected when transferring a game to hand-held.

(Edit): Finally got around to console version, which is infinitely more developed than PSP version, but nevertheless... BFII is still my favorte game on PSP.

Hey, Where Did The Online And Story Mode Go?

Now you may think that what you are buying is exactly like Battlefront 2 for PC or PS2, but be warned, it is not. The PSP version falls far short of the console versions. I bought this thonking that it would be cool to play against my friends online but I was very disappointed by the lack of online gaming (which is the reason I bought Socom.)
Beside the lack of online the game has other major flaws. Aiming with just one analog stick and the square, x, circle, and triangle button is very awkward.
However Battlefront does include the two major new features from its console version. First: playable hero characters, even though the hero characters actually aren't all that great and you can only have one on the map. Secondly: The space battles, which are really fun but lack the ability to go inside the enemies ship and sabotage from the inside.
The PSP version of Battlefront offers two different single-player modes: galactic conquest and challenge. Too bad they didn't include a story mode (Rise of the Empire).
Thoughout all these flaws, the game still sounds and looks good. The music is great but weapons sound pretty horrible.
Probably the biggest downside of the game is the number of maps you can play, 13. In the console version, I'm pretty sure there are 23 or 24. Oh well, buy this game if you want but don't pay 45 dollars for it. It's probably best to rent first.

Limitations of PSP for First Person Shooters.

I love the psp for what it is. A great mobile gaming platform! But first person shooters just have limitations so far on this platform. Starwars Battlefront 2 is another example of that. I am not knocking the game but just think someone who purchases a FPS for the psp should not expect PS2 or x-box experience. The games controls feel clunky and laborous. I am not ripping the one analog control stick. There have been other very succesful titles on past platforms that have been easy to play that used only one analog stick. Its just that designers need to work with what they have instead of trying to have the same functionality as with x-box or ps2. Overall it is not a bad game its just doesnt have it "right"

This is a game you can just play forever. The AI maybe stupid, but it's a psp game. You can also play as a jedi or sith, which is a nice edition. Buy it!!!
