4x4 Evo II: it's like the first, only better...

I own a Dreamcast. I also own 4x4 Evolution for it. The Dreamcast magazine writers gave it a bad rating too, who cares. I bought it and couldn't put it down, awesome game for Dreamcast, only thing missing is what is in the X-box version of the game which I now have...Jeeps! This game pretty much has every SUV you can think of and so much more. Also you can put lift-kits onto your SUV, super charge it, and much much more. It's like Gran Turismo with SUV's and (in my opinion) better graphics and more fun. You can drive anywhere you want to on a level, just go exploring. Or heres another idea, play a 2 player race with a buddy and play "tag", the game is so expansive you can and will get lost. Great game, although does get very hard once you SuperCharge your car. When you upgrade your vehicle, your fellow racers get the same upgrade.
Stars:
Graphics - ***** 5 Outstanding Visuals
Control - **** /* 4.5 Great responsive controls
Sound - **** /* 4.5 Nice sound for a racing game, can get repetitive though...
Replay Value - ***** 5 Challenging game with much to do will keep true racing fans glued to the game for a long time.
Overall - ***** 5 Stars. The Best Off-Road SUV racing game. Period.

If you liked 4x4 Evolution 1, GET THIS

If you like 4x4 evolution 1 or just like racing get this game. it has stunning graphics and almost too big of levels. I tested out this game at Toys R Us and it was great. on one of the levels they let you go so much off the track that i acually go lost. Definetly get this game if you like racing games.(...)

when i bought x box on launch day, i bought two games, halo and 4x4 evo 2. i bought halo because of the hype, and 4x4 evo 2 because the first game rocked. This game easily surpasses the old game, with many new parts, racing teams, and the addition of the Jeep brand SUVs. There is one key element that makes this game unique- you have a usable winch. the winch really helps out in missions where you are almost to the top of the hill and you just cant seem to get much traction. You then get crosshairs and aim at a tree, and if your winch is good enough to go the distance, you fire and pull yourself up. The addition of teams adds much more depth to the game, as you must try out for them in order to get special parts and cars. This game is just overall greatness, if you like test drive off-road, its time for you to play a real off-road race game, get 4x4 evo 2.

Get it, you like it

Listen, the first review is from a kid that doesn't have the game, and is basing his opinion on a bad review he read in a magazine.

This review is from someone who owns the game. It is awesome. If you like racing, or off-roading, get it. It has a career mode similar to GT, and some really fun adventures where you have goals that are all 4x4 related.

Ton of fun. Heck with the "real" reviews. This is a game for the people.

One of the reasons I bought an Xbox

I Loved 4x4 Evo, so naturally i wanted to try version 2. Finally had an opportunity to purchase an xbox and well this game is darn cheap at costco so what the heck.
The game hasn't changed too much from the first version. Now teams are available which is a nice toucha nd the cars and track list is increased.
The same gripe I had about the first game still applies though. When you purchase an upgrade the computer automatically gets it. If you are winning races and thus earning money, shouldn't the computer have to do the same? Essentially, the rule of thumb is only mod your truck to things you need to be a bit more competative, but not to make a monster truck. Once you have everything you'd want in a truck, the computer is sure to beat you.
Where this game really shines is in two player mode. Computer can't cheat this way, and its just you and a buddy beating up a couple of trucks. Lets face it, its pretty fun to beat up your own SUV and not have to worry about repair bills.
The fully open courses also make the game very fun. In free drive mode, you can practice the courses, and plan for the short cuts which are mandatory if you want to win some races.
Definitely worth the price I bought it for...

an average game....

I rented this game only because I owned all the other games that were in at blockbuster. I was pleasantly surprised. I thought the game would be a total dud. The graphics are pretty good, and the controls are pretty easy. I wish there were more camera angles to choose from instead of just the three (the sky-cam, the third one, is totally useless... You cant even see your truck in wooded areas). The one major drawback to the game was no Fords. I own a Dodge Ram and I would have loved to beat them in the Big 3 challenge. (note: how can they call it the big three challenge w/out Ford??? They have Dodge, Chevy and GMC... GMC and Chevy are just about the same thing)
The other pet peeve of mine was no matter how fast you built your truck, the competition always was right with you. Even after putting a turbo on my truck I still came in 5th out of 6th. There was no reason to spend thousands of dollars to build your truck if it had no impact on the outcome of the race.
What saved the games? All the real world parts you can buy. Rancho suspension, ARB air lockers, WARN winches, BFG and Super Swamper tires, etc. The prices were a little inflated, though. $40,000 for the top of the line Warn winch??? come on. The prices for the trucks was right on, however. Another thing that saved the game: the missions. They were just fun.
I wish you could build your own tracks like the origional ExciteBike. Being from San Diego, I wish they had more emphasis on 2wheel drive trucks for baja-style racing.
The game was fun to play and I enjoyed building my truck up and trying out for the racing teams. I think the game would get old pretty soon, though. I started turning back to my franchise on Madden 2002 at the end of the rental period.

Good game but could be much better

On the surface 4x4 Evo 2 is the ultimate off-road game; it has good graphics, lots of sweet vehicles, and tons of real upgrades. But when you actually start to play you notice many things wrong with the game. My main complaint is with the computer components. They are able to bash, push, rub, and run you off the road without slowing down (in fact they actually speed up!!) while you are left choking in their dust. They also have the ability to catch up with you no matter how far ahead you are or how much faster your vehicle is than theirs.

My other complaint is with the environment. Even though you have a 12" lift kit and 37" tires on your truck don't even think about trying to drive over a rock or you'll find your self stopped dead in your tracks. The same goes with the checkpoint markers; any other obstacle (such as a fence or sign) you can plow right over, but not that little wooden sign marking a checkpoint. And if you miss a checkpoint or drive of a cliff and need to reset your vehicle back on the track the game puts you like a 100 yards back from where you needed to reset, but if one of the computer opponents needs to reset it gets plopped down nicely exactly where it ran into problems.

This is one of those games you want to play over and over again and can really get to liking it a lot, but at the same time hating it enough to brake the CD into a thousand pieces!

So much potential..

4x4 Evo 2 has elements of a very good game, but the graphics are so disappointing it isn't worthwhile.

The game centers around a career mode. You start out with $30k and have to buy a vehicle and then earn money for upgrades. You can earn money by participating in races (organized into series) or by completing missions. As you progress up the career path you get involved with teams and have the opportunity to purchase better equipment.

The races take place over large courses with competitors that are nothing short of ruthless. You are free to take any path you want to get to the next checkpoint. In fact, using shortcuts is necessary to be competitive on some tracks. Along the way, the competition will do everything they can to keep you from winning. Expect to be trading paint all the way to the finish.

The missions usually involve finding a location on a map. You are shown a crude map of the location and then given a detail contour map for route-finding. The task is often easier said than done since the terrain is difficult to traverse and finding your goal on the contour map isn't easy. The missions may sound dull, but they actually add a nice touch to an otherwise standard driving game.

Unfortunately the games graphics are so bad it just isn't worth buying. The vehicle models have almost no detail and no damage modelling. The environments (while very large) are visually unappealing and don't appear to be up to XBox "standards" at all.

Awesome Game
